THE Class 1 Hoops Thread 2018-19

We got some discussion finally! Mound City is the favorite. I wouldn’t want to play Jefferson a fourth time though after three crazy close game, and Mound City hasn’t been a front runner until this year...new waters. It’s a little different feeling when you can have your season ended in a poor effort. Don’t ever count out the ever scrappy Winston club or the Tim Jermain squad in Conception.

Top ten teams with the most wins and a SOS of -2.5 or better. Dora 20-1, South Iron 17-2, Eminence 17-4, Slater 17-4, Mound City 16-0, Jefferson 16-3, St. Elizabeth 16-5, North Andrew 15-3, Pattonsburg 13-4, Delta 13-9
I won’t disagree on this. Winston could average 85 points in the HDC but I know for a fact they aren’t playing their top players in the fourth quarter of a lot of games. Defensively, some of this also correlates to pace and style of play. North teams tend to play a little slower while southern teams are more press and transition teams.

These Mound City boys have experienced big games. Football helped them quite a bit. Get the young guys the experience playing at the highest competition of 8-man football. So the experience factor really isn’t going to be an issue, I don’t think. They are so deep, that they will be fine. The Final 4 will be fun with them down in Springfield. I think they can win it all with how good they have looked recently.

How do you think they would have stacked up with last year’s North Andrew team or the Stanberry teams of the years before?

It is my estimation that whoever NWMO sends will be in the title game. Same with semo.

Any updates from the other regions? District Seeds will be set here pretty soon, with I think a few posted already. (6, 11, and 13 are in Mshsaa)

Is Dora the overall favorite? Think Mound City will run the table for the "Gauntlet"?

Anyone have any better insight into NEMO and SWMO? Lakeland or St. Elizabeth, Meadville or Slater? (Slater is the 3 seed in their district under Mendon and Meadville) Glasgow the 4.

Will Eminence be able to get back to ruling SEMO? South Iron have the ability to dethrone the other two?

Will Winston be able to overcome Mound City? Will Jefferson Get Mound City in the 4th attempt?

Who can be the "Chamois" of last year?
My biggest concern with Mound City is that they started slow every time against Jefferson. Jefferson has had a good game plan, but hasn’t been able to beat them. Also, this may be Winston’s best team ever. If they do run the table, it will be earned.

Winston is good, but I think the team that lost to Braymer in districts was very formidable. Also arguable that the team that upset Stanberry to end up finishing 2nd in State a few years back is probably the best. But, make no mistake, they are good.

Prime Time Game Alert: C2#10 East Atchison (Tarkio) takes on Undefeated Mound City... a rematch from Mound City tourney final where Mound City won by 12. Any other big games going on in the state?

I saw Eminence lost by 15 or so to C2 Thayer...seemed to have dropped off with the loss of the dyer boy and loss to Dora.

I would say the winner of Dora/Eminence in districts is the favorite to win the whole thing. I am not as familiar with the teams some of the other teams play as far as what class. Dora will have played 7 class 1 teams and half of their schedule is class 3 or larger. Eminence only 8 class 1 teams. Obviously class isn't the end all as far as quality teams go but I wonder how the schedules of some of the other teams compare to Dora and Eminence.

I will say in NEMO and NWMO there aren't many class 3's in the area to play, so those teams are only playing c1s primarily and some C2's. SWMO is more diverse in class levels too I would think. SEMO definitely lends itself to the upper level challenges and bigger school competition.

East Atchison and Mound City headed to OT tied at 72. McAdams for EA hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to send it into OT.

North Andrew also lost to Falls City Sacred Heart out of Nebraska 54-50. They will play Milan tomorrow night.

54-40 on NA game...beat me to all the good stuff Hoops!
Milan defeated North Andrew 77-49 last night. It was my first time seeing Milan in person. They made North Andrew look very bad. I have seen both East Buch and Milan play. Milan would probably beat them by 10-15 points IMO. (I know they are class 2)

Looks like Dora beat Class 4 Neosho 79-63. Neosho has a record of only 9-10, but they play a pretty fair schedule.

New Maxpreps top 25.. (record, then rating, then strength of schedule...not easy to cut/paste today...not sure why.

1Dora 23-1 17.71.2
2Mound City 17-1 17.00.7
3Jefferson (Conception Junction) 18-3 15.61.8
4Winston 21-0 13.2-5.7
5Eminence 19-4 12.20.3
6South Iron (Annapolis) 18-31 1.7-1.8
7North Andrew (Rosendale)16-5 11.21.2
8Slater 17-4 9.4-2.2
9Meadville 17-3 9.2-3.7
10St. Elizabeth 17-5 9.1-0.9
11Lakeland (Deepwater) 21-2 9.0-7.1
12Mercer 15-4 8.6-2.2
13Northwestern (Mendon) 16-1 8.0-8.3
14Risco 20-4 7.9-4.5
15Southwest (Ludlow) 16-2 7.9-5.7
16Pattonsburg 14-4 7.6-2.9
17La Plata 17-4 5.8-6.3
18Weaubleau 16-6 5.2-3.8
19Lesterville 17-6 4.4-4.1
20South Nodaway (Barnard) 13-5 4.1-4.7
21Linn County (Purdin) 12-6 4.1-2.5
22Halfway 18-4 4.0-7.3
23North Nodaway (Hopkins) 14-7 3.8-1.9
24South Holt (Oregon) 12-7 3.5-1.1
25Glasgow 10-8 3.41.1

things to note...
1. Mshsaa District Seedings are completed:
D7: (1) St. Elizabeth (2)Weaubleau--as I predicted......
D8 (1) Concordia (2) Leeton ...I predicted Chilhowee was 2 seed..they are the 7 at 10-9 record...not even close
D12: (1) La Plata, (2) Linn County (3) Green City, (4) Novinger....this is a pretty even top 4 as well...La Plata may not get out...just like Meadville in D11.

2. Mound City is coming off its first loss...seeing some teams losing focus and some pushing ahead. Will be interesting to see if some teams will be awakened by post season coming, who will be able to endure the post-season pressure and who are ready to be done

3. My Sectional vulnerability rankings (of the picks in the final 8, who I think is most likely to be upset in order of 1 being most vulnerable: (NOT POWER RANKINGS)

1. Prairie Home...not even the 1 seed in their district, just my gut pick
2. La Plata...lots of challengers: Meadville, Slater, Linn County, Mendon

3. Mound City..because Jefferson is RIGHT there... 7 point deficit in 3 gms
4. Winston...decent district, but should prevail over other D14
5. Dora...strong horse...as long as they don't send the wrong guy to the free throw line :S....too soon? :) They are tough. Eminence is there though
6. St. Elizabeth..Concordia awaits possibly..up and down team

7. South Iron.. Risco/SCC could prove formidable
8. Lakeland...nobody touching them in districts or sectionals

thoughts?

Slater will have played 12 class 2 games and have only lost 1 game (in OT by 1) to a class 1 team but some district seeds are determined by records alone. I think Slater will be back this year and will pass last years quarter-final appearance. SOS says a lot and 5 losses that average -3 points means they were in EVERY game they played.

I like them in their district even as the 3 seed, but I think it's pretty wide open. They are one of the reasons I have La Plata as very vulnerable

I personally think Mound City can run the “gauntlet” they are a complete team. Who can defend the basketball very well. And the offense is outstanding. If they beat East Atchison this week I like the chances to go to the Final 4. That means to huge matchups with Jefferson in the Sectional round. (4th matchup) then Winston in the Quarters. Both in St Joe. You bet I’ll be attending both of those games.
didn't age well :) But probably woke them up.

Yeah I noticed that. I would say that they probably are awake now. Took a tough loss, I look for them to get back on track and roll through districts with no issue. (Yes, I know North Andrew is the 2 in the district) I think MC is ready for what’s left on the schedule. Jefferson will be tough as we have all said before. Still my bet to represent NWMO is Mound City.

Agree they are the favorite. North Andrew is trending the wrong way right now it seems.

I'll tell you that Wellington-Napoleon is at least #13 on this list...

D9 - Pilot Grove is much better than a 4, with quality wins over Community, Concordia, Jamestown, Glasgow, Slater and New Franklin (C2) all close games but could make Elite8 against Slater.

Hope to be in Springfield for the Class 1 semifinals. Can someone please tell me the results of any head-to-head games this season between South Iron, Eminence, and Dora.

Do all three have a full roster of their key players available going into districts, or are any lost to injury?

Thanks!

Dora beat Eminence 71-54 in their only match up
Eminence beat South Iron 65-59 and that was after the injury to one of the Dyer twins

Dora has all 5 starters healthy

The injuries that Eminence and South Iron have are big ones. If those two players get healthy then the SEMO quadrant will be fun to watch. Dora obviously is the favorite in that area and probably the state but I have a sneaky suspicion that Eminence will repeat... Lot of great basketball in Class 1 all over the state!!

Thanks for the information on SEMO class 1 hoops. I'm re-reading Matt Chaney's excellent book on Coach Arnold Ryan and the Puxico Indians; it's got me excited about seeing the class 1 semifinals.
I need to do the same as you and read that book again. Highly recommended reading for those of you who have never had the pleasure.

Matt is a heck of a guy. I have lost touch with him. Years ago he would come and speak to classes at our school. His books are well researched and written. My Name Is Mr. Ryan is a great book on the regional basketball in Southeast Missouri.
