THE Class 1 Hoops Thread 2018-19

It appears from scores entered in Mshsaa, we should be on the lookout for the Delta Bobcats who have knocked of SCC in Overtime and also a solid C2 Oak Ridge team. Maybe they are the #3 team in SEMO class 1? Not sure.
Oak Ridge beat Delta in the Woodland Tournament championship game the week after Thanksgiving. The following Tuesday, Delta got revenge on their home court. Although, OR was without their 6th man. Two good, small school teams.

My way too early playoff tree (I just want to see how far off I will get)

D1: Delta over SCC
D2: South Iron
D3:Eminence (who gets to host their district..I'd be mad if I was Dora)--if they can get out of their district, they win it all.
D4: Halfway over WG (WG is district host though, so probably an iffy pick)

D5: Golden City
D6: Lakeland
D7: St. Elizabeth over Weaubleau (w hosts)
D8: Concordia (they have a NCAA D2 pitching prospect to UCM...so interesting fact)

D9: Missouri School for the Deaf over Prairie Home
D10: Community R-6
D11: Slater (but pretty strong district)
D12: La Plata over Linn county (but 50/50 really at this point)

D13: Winston over Wellington Napoleon
D14: Mercer over Pattonsburg (new development for my thinking)
D15: Mound City over North Andrew
D16: Jefferson over Stanberry

Sectionals:

South Iron over Delta
Eminence over Halfway

Lakeland over Golden City
St. Elizabeth over Concordia

Community R-6 over MSD
Slater over La Plata

Winston over Mercer
Mound City over Jefferson

Quarters:

Eminence over South Iron
St. Elizabeth over Lakeland (St. Elizabeth with a 6'5 and 6'7 kid, and two 6-4"?!? (stats posted too) http://www.maxpreps.com/high-schools/st-elizabeth-hornets-(st-elizabeth,mo)/basketball/roster.htm ...lakelands are also posted.

Community over Slater
Really don't know...but I'll take Mound City over Winston

Semi's
Eminence over St. Elizabeth
Mound City over Community

Title Game:

Eminence over Mound City

Now...lets see what actually happens. Good luck to all teams.

What can you tell us about Delta...just the first I've heard of them through checking scores

They’re not real big, but quick and athletic. Biggest kid is a sophomore, about 6’2, but plays bigger. Main scorers are junior guards. Will be very good this year and next as they play few seniors. I’ve only watched them twice.

It does appear that league is very competitive this year. A good blend of C2 and C1 Schools, too. What I've found lately is the style of play in NEMO (I know most schools are central mo) hasn't translated well to the playoffs. SEMO is all about transition and up tempo, and Northwest Missouri and SWMO is somewhere in between. Scores in Central/NEMO are usually in 40's& 50's where it isn't uncommon for 70's and 80s in SEMO, NWMO with the top teams.

Therefore, I always personally give the edge to the other regions over NEMO. I can be convinced otherwise. It does appear NEMO is wide open.

Looking at MSHSAA site until last night Slater was averaging 75.5 over 6 games, would agree with the SEMO comment but it looks like Slater can run at that pace also.

I saw that on Tuesday, Mound City only won over North Nodaway by 15. Do we just take this as an off-game for Mound City, or is North Nodaway the real deal? Would love to hear about the game from someone that was there.

Eminence and Dora went down to who? Not all losses are equal.
agreed...I said that the last couple years when Walnut Grove got beat by a quality larger class school and immediately dropped in the polls

I too knew that Walnut Grove was top tier with their nine losses...but never helped their rankings until the end.

Dora and Eminence were both playing out of state schools, so that loss is irrelevant, and probably just makes them stronger.

Mercer beat a middle of the road Stanberry team by about 15 over the weekend, which leads me to believe they aren't as strong as I had them trending. Them and Pattonsburg in their district will be a really good game if Mercer has some rebounders.

All indications are that Winston will keep rolling. Wellington I have been hearing has a special guard in Trey Shannon, but hard to compare them to area teams as they don't play any of them head-to-head.

Updated Maxpreps Rankings....(some schools not reporting their scores, which is why eminence is so low). The strengths of schedule will dissipate as the season goes on for most teams. It's just such a low amount of data to this point to rank the teams.

2 Mound City 5-0 21.6 7.5
3 Jefferson (Conception Junction) 6-1 18.4 6.1

Many teams either have a tournament, low-key matchups, or are on break until January according to Maxpreps. Hoping the poll will come out soon from the coaches for more to talk about.

If this wasn't $2 Tuesday at the bar in Princeton where I drink, I would take in Pattonsburg vs. Winston. Two longtime HDC Conference rivals. It's good to see they still play after Pattonsburg left for the Grand River Conference.

Winston wins by 16 and Jefferson wins by 9. Delta falls to Oran by 3. I think Delta must be the real deal but not sure if they are on the same tier as Dora and Eminence.
Delta is the real deal. I know little to nothing of Dora, but Eminence is probably a step above Delta. Maybe half a step.

Dora is very good, and would win probably any region in the state if Eminence wasn't in their way. (At least I would favor them).

They do lack size, but their guard play, pace of play, skill, and toughness is hard to match.

Updated Coaches Poll:
1 Eminence 4-1

2 Dora 7-1

3 South Iron 6-0

4 Lakeland 7-1

5 St. Elizabeth 8-1

6 Winston 8-0

7 Mound City 7-0

8 Slater 6-1

9 Halfway 5-1

10 LaPlata 6-1

Others receiving votes: Jefferson 6-1, Risco 7-2, Meadville 6-1, Linn County 6-2, Wellington Napoleon

I would argue Risco shouldn't be ranked based on the fact Eminence and Dora will reign down there (also Delta should be above them).

Lakeland isn't a top tier team, IMO, but may win their region depending on how they matchup with St. Elizabeth.

I wish I lived in a more central location to see more of these other teams (or steal some game film) :) NEMO, SWMO are WIDE Open. NWMO and SEMO have 3 contenders in each region I think right now as top tier.

Your second paragraph describes Delta, as well.

My top 10...(again, based on what I know...if we are going best 10 teams in the state)---you can see my bias too. Sorry, NEMO, I don't see a team sticking out as dominant, and your style of ball hasn't translated well in the final four the past several years.

1. Eminence- D3
2. Dora- D3
3. Mound City- D15
4. Winston- D13
5. Jefferson- D16
6. South Iron- D2
7. Delta- D1
8. Wellington Napoleon- D13
9. St. Elizabeth-D7
10. Lakeland/Halfway/Slater/La Plata (NEMO & SWMO)

I'm always open to people proving me otherwise! I think the top 8 is where the real dividing line is in regards to quality teams.

the 3rd and fourth finishing teams in state will very much not be the 3rd and 4th best teams in the state, much like last year when Chamois was not in the same class as the other 3 teams. (maybe I'm trying to stir the pot a little) too quiet on here.

Pool of top teams in NWMO:

1. Mound City
2. Winston
3. Jefferson
4. Wellington Napoleon
5. North Andrew/Pattonsburg

Pool of Top Teams in SEMO:
1. Eminence
2. Dora
3. South Iron
4. Delta
5. Walnut Grove/Scott County Central

Pool of Top Teams in SWMO:
1. St. Elizabeth
2. Lakeland
3. Concordia
4. Fair Play? (plays Lakeland tomorrow night)

Pool of Top NEMO Teams:
1. Slater
2. La Plata
3. Community
4. Meadville
5. Linn County/NW Mendon

A little late and a little off topic, but I happen to own some Steve McQueen driving shoes.

I agree with NWMO. There is a clear dividing line between the top 3 and the rest. The GRC is down this year. Last year the Class 1 GRC teams vs. other Class 1 teams had a .797 winning percentage. This year, it is .444. That is a huge drop off.

North Andrew and Pattonsburg are definitely the top 2 in the west, but are not elite this year like last year. Last year, SJCS and Worth County were unbeaten vs. Class 1 (non-conference) and North Andrew's only loss was to Walnut Grove in the State Semifinals.

I haven't seen Well-Nap play. They are 3-4, but have lost to some very good teams.

Well, Walnut Grove in in Southwest Missouri, not Southeast Missouri. About a 200 mile difference.

GRC quote above.....
"I haven't seen Well-Nap play. They are 3-4, but have lost to some very good teams".[/QUOTE]

I have got to see them (Well Nap) play...and their guard Trey Shannon may be one of the top 5 best players in NWMO. Deep 3 point shooting with a quick release and transition abilities similar to the Hughes kid from North Andrew last year....he is quick and speed dribbles it right down your throat and has a variety of finishing moves. Their overall depth isn't where it has been in the past...which might push them behind Mound City and Jefferson in the various polls..
Have watched Mound City, Jefferson, Winston, Wellington Napoleon, Pattonsburg, SW, Mercer, ....hoping to catch North Andrew over break.

"You Don't Know Me" is pretty accurate with his NWMO info....I won't send him any money until he stops begging for pre-season threads on Class 1 polls a month before the first practice. ha ha.

Mound City is deserving of a top 3 State billing....for now.

Pretty sure he was dividing them by where they will go based on districts to get to the Final 4. And this year Walnut Grove will go in the same quadrant as Eminence, Dora, Delta etc.

I'm aware of their geographical location, but they are in SEMO quarter for the state playoffs. That's how I'm breaking it up and always have.

Interesting fact, although raised in Central Missouri (NEMO quarter, haha) and currently residing in NWMO, my great grandfather was born in Walnut Grove, MO.

My 4 great grandfather is buried in a cemetery outside of Milan, Missouri. (GRC powerhouse country)
