Big 8 may be the best small school conference once again this year....
This may be true, but it is only because the level of football (Especially in class 3) is very low right now. Having seen a few of these teams play already, and seeing film on others shows that mediocrity is being passed off as really good football. Outside of Lamar (who overshadows nearly every program in the state), the Big 8 is nowhere close to where it used to be. I've been keeping up with this conference for 30 years, and it's just not the same. I'm not going to argue that the Big 8 has a few top ten teams in class 3, but that doesn't mean nearly as much as what it used to...

What are you stating as "use to be" hasnt the big 8 had someone in the final 4 the past 7/8 years? Its going to be the same this year....

Thats exactly what I'm saying. If you missed the part about the level of class 3 being very low I'm sorry. I'm more so talking about the last three or four years. The state champion cassville teams were the real deal.

What about Monett last year? What about Seneca 3 years ago? The Big 8 has always been 1 of if not the best/hardest conferences in the state for the last 20+ years.

I didn't say it hasn't been one of the toughest conferences. I'm stating that the quality of the teams isn't what it once was. If you will read through what I said, I still said the big 8 has top 10 teams, but what you aren't looking at is the overall strength of class 3. It just isn't as strong as it was even ten years ago. I'm not going to tear apart these schools that make great postseason runs, because it is a very great accomplishment. As far as Monett last year they made a great run, and took advantage of some oppurtunies (for example when owensvilles quarterback got injured early in the game) and capitalized. Monett has had at least 3 teams in the past 10-15 years that were better than the state championship team from last year, but once again it's all about who you have to play. It helped everyone when harrisonville made the jump to 4. As far as the Seneca team I'm not even going to attempt to reason with you because judging by your username you are a homer that is dying to bring back good memories after a couple of forgettable years.

Yes I attended Seneca but I'm not trying to bring back good memories. Yes the last couple of years have been bad due to high graduation rates and the number of kids are strong this year with only 6 seniors.

According to Calpreps.com the Big 8 is the 8th best football conference in Missouri regardless of classification, right behind the COC Large which I greatly respect. I would say the Big 8 has been strong in the past and is strong now. I know some are going to say, "calpreps is a joke", however I would responded by asking what your prediction model shows?...thought so. Calpreps tends to be more accurate the most of the arm chair QB's on mosports.

Hey bottombulb, what school do you follow? It seems that you don't want to give credit to any Class 3 Big 8 school except Cassville.

This is for this year so far, and only considers non-league results. For instance, the CCC has only played 2 non-league games so far, and one of those was Louisiana who hasn't won a game in years. Hardly a quality measuring stick of how good a paticular conference is especially when it's so early. Sorry to rain on your parade, carry on.

Sounds like you're a Cassville homer trying to bring back memories of the good ol days.

Totally agree with your technical assessment and the sample size being too small however the point is last year the big 8 was at the top of the conference list and the year before, and trending this way again this year. Based on your comment you act like the big 8 is going to move from number eight and number 20 and that just won't happen. You said carry-on. After three or four more weeks I'll remind you of your comment.

At least both your programs have good ol days. Until this run .500 was a good season for lamar. Makes this run that much sweeter
Couldn't be more happier for Lanark. My aunt graduated from there and my grandparents lived there for several years. My late uncle was on the police department before he passed away from cancer. Hope you guys keep rolling even if you do beat us.

You must have reading comprehension issues. I never said anything about the Big 8. It's obviously an outstanding conference. My point was with the CCC (another good conference) being near the bottom of your linked list makes it flawed.

West Plains will have to be at least 3-0, possibly 4-0 to break into the rankings. That's just how it is for them always. The sports writers are discounting them because their starting QB is a soph, who started last year as a freshman and their primary running back is a soph as well. They're banking on the inexperience to catch up with them soon. I suppose we'll see.

BottomBulb - I understood what you were referencing in regards to classes being up and down in regards to talent. Talent does come in waves. I was referring to the "used to be" you stated to the actual conference. You mentioned it after the statement about Lamar. But to reply the last 3 or 4 years, Big 8 Football has been represented really well. Last years Monett team was the real deal. athletes all over the field. Aurora year before was one of the most underachieving classes in a while. They should have been multiple runs to the final 4. 3 years ago, Monett again was loaded with big play athletes. I could go on back until the back to back Cassville teams which were great teams. But we can respectful disagree.

Cards1968 - valid point on being early on. I however do still think the winner of district 4 is making a run to the semis

Class 3 has been down as a whole since 2011, Class 3 at the very top has been down since 2013. Monett was very good last year, but they weren't even a top four team in 2009/2010/2011.. The Big 8 has been one of the best, but wouldn't beat itself from 7 years ago. Not even because it's down now, just because it was that good then.

Oline - I understand your point, but I do not believe there is that much of a difference as a whole, if at all. I assume you have been around during both the time frames we are discussing as I, so we may just see things differently

I'm glad at least one other person on this board realizes this.

The big 8 is still a top conference. The state of football in class 3 just isn't very good right now..

7 of 48 is "near the bottom"?...ok I like new math. I do agree that the COC Lager as a conference will be rated higher in a few weeks, however you make is sound like calpreps is way off, just not the case.

Yeah I don't see it either. So what if Class 3 is down, you play who lines up against you on the other side of the ball. What does he expect? Every top 10 team be undefeated going into the playiffs?

I would like to know what football you have been watching....unless you are biased to those years...not seeing it.
Go to a Big 8 game (besides Lamar) and you should see it pretty clearly. I don't really have a bias to any certain year, but I have traveled around watching these schools for a very long time. It's not what it once was year in and year out. Lamar is good for any era of this conference, but strength top to bottom just isn't there at the moment.

You're right. You can only play who lines up. I never said they had to be undefeated, the three "top ten" teams that are listed right now would be bottom feeders in Big 8 in past years. Some people just can't accept that, and I get it.

Regardless of where I'm from I just don't see the quality of football that there used to be in this conference.

I have actually thought since Harrisonville left that Class 3 has been weaker, however that does not mean it really is, just that one dominate school moved on! You look Cassville nor Monett or any other Big 8 school had much success in Class 3 until they left and that is the truth, Cassville and Monett both got throttle by them every year they matched up with them in the playoffs. But that does not diminish Cassville's titles any less. Then last year all I heard before the Maryville game was Monett was going to get Throttle by Maryville because they were just too to much for the Cubs. Well Monett wins and all of a sudden Class 3 is down? LOL

Well Monett was leading Lamar most of last years game, they did not pull away until an injury.

Lmao I'm done trying to have a rational conversation because you can't open your eyes to see that the 3 top 10 teams this week would be competitive in years past in the Big 8. Ask Bullitt or any other Big 8 fan and I'm sure they'd disagree with you too.

I see Big 8 teams play every week. Still not sure I agree with you. We can agree to disagree, I just do not think the level of play in the conference is much different than years you claim.

Well Monett was leading Lamar most of last years game, they did not pull away until an injury.

Monett lost last years game against Lamar due to the 3rd phase of the game in special teams. 3 big KOR broke them.

Yeah Lamar was complete last year for sure.

Too bad the Big 8 is getting watered down next year. 4 ranked teams out of 8 is still pretty impressive.

Football wise, the merge of conference not very good ( at least in recent years). but for other sports like bball and baseball it will be much better. Small COC very good tradition in those sports.
