Frisco League Discussion

Couple observations: With how many people on the board have talked about Dixon's possibility of not fielding a team this year and they pulled the 5 seed. Also, after not having a lot of people talk about them this off-season, Iberia getting the 6 could be called a surprise. Anyone else see anything surprising?

I was just saying that no one really talked about Iberia, but Plato and Crocker had some people talking about them and it was mildly surprising to see them seeded above those two teams. I mean, they have to play Richland, so I guess we'll find out how good they are pretty quickly.

Does anyone have a decent shot at upsetting Licking? Any teams with the guards to slow them down and not turn it over or a big post presence to give them problems?

Licking has the best post player in the conference. Newburg finished 2nd last year in Frisco and Licking beat them 20 without Holland. That being said...Richland could beat Licking especially at Richland if Cole can stay out of foul trouble.

Dixon has at least 5 and at most 7. They will have a stud, a shooter, 2 decent role players and who ever they talked into playing ball.

Still not quite sure how this gets them the 5 seed. Their coach must be one heck of a snake oil salesman!

The bottom isn't that bad. Plato was in a district championship last year and upset richland in the semis. The only really bad team is Laquey.

Curious to see Licking at the Jamboree tonight. Catholic and Miller will be at Mansfield with them.

No one. Lol It was a sloppy scrimmage. You can’t really take away anything from a jamboree. I would say Licking and Miller had the best players but it was pretty ugly.

Holland is the reason Licking beat Newburg so badly last year in their conference game. Newburg dug themselves a hole in the first part of the game when Holland was playing. After she got hurt, the game was played fairly evenly. With that said, any given team can be beaten on any given night. Stoutland certainly came close last year to beating them, only losing by 4 points. Again, this was without Holland. If you venture outside the Frisco League, St. James could give them a run for their money. And then, of course, there’s Rolla, who did beat them last year. Of course Thayer and Hartville were also successful against Licking. So it’s not like Licking is invincible. I believe Newburg or Richland could beat them, but it would require a little bit of luck. Either of these teams would have to be on fire with their shooting (and hope Licking wasn’t), limit their turnovers to around 10 or less (which will be very difficult against Licking’s defense), and Affolter & Cole have to play super smart and not get into foul trouble. Along with all of this, they must find a way to contain Holland (which is no small task). So, if the moon and stars line up just right, it’s possible that in a parallel universe somewhere Newburg or Richland might beat Licking. We must remember that Licking was fourth place in the state class 3 last year and virtually everyone is returning, except maybe Ingram (don’t ask me why cuz I don’t know). She will be a significant loss for them.
As a class 3 final four team, they will be the favorite in almost all their games. Pressure will always be on them to win. No pressure will be on the underdog. Not being under pressure to win can really be liberating for teams to play at their best. So I wouldn’t be surprised to see the moon and stars align just right for a few teams and Licking get upset a time or two this season.

Licking's length will give Newburg trouble on both ends. Outside of their two Sophomores, they are small.

Licking was up by 5 when Holland went down early 1st quarter and they won by 20. Holland played against Stoutland the entire game. Newburg lost to Plato who Licking beat by 50. Rolla will be final four in class 4 and possibly win it.

I just want to say that my post prior to this one was more of an answer to “Mohsbballfan’s” question about Licking. I should’ve posted as a reply to him instead of “Hoopsquad20”, but thanks Hoopsquad20 for the clarification on the games last season. I was told Licking’s lead was much larger than 5 when Holland got hurt in the Newburg game. I guess I assumed Holland didn’t play against Stoutland since Licking only beat them by four. Stoutland was their next game after beating Newburg and Holland getting hurt. Since you pointed out that Holland played, you reinforced the whole point of my post. My point was that any team can lose on any given night. The fact that Stoutland played them to a four point game WITH Holland shows that Licking can be vulnerable.

Not sure what your point is about Plato beating Newburg and Licking beating Plato. Plato also beat Richland last season and, like you said, “Licking beat Plato by 50”. Yet, you believe that Richland might beat Licking. It’s like you stand reason on its head. Using your same reasoning, one should come to the same conclusion about the Richland/Licking game that you came to about Newburg/Licking if you’re basing it off of their performances against Plato. With this reasoning, one could argue that Newburg is the better team when compared to Richland. After all, Stoutland beat Richland twice as did Dixon. Yet Newburg beat both those teams and also beat Richland twice. So using your own logic, wouldn’t Newburg have to be better than Richland? I would guess that most people, myself included, could argue that Richland is the better of the two, but in reality they are two pretty even teams. You also picked both Newburg and Richland to finish ahead of Licking in the conference. So it’s anyone’s guess what your true feelings are about any of these teams. Your opinion seems fickle at times. And I’m not saying that as an insult, although it will probably come across that way. My guess is that you only picked the conference standings to end that way because you were trolling this board to see what kind of reaction you would get.

Justifying your loss to Rolla last year by saying they’re a class 4 final four team (and possibly state champs) this year, sounds like you’re justifying the loss because of Rolla’s size. The implication is that because of Rolla’s size, Rolla “should always”beat Licking. This takes pressure off of you and lowers people’s expectations of you being successful against Rolla. Again, this was a point that I made about pressure and underdogs. But by you saying it has to do with size of school, you’re only demeaning Licking’s success in the Frisco League, as they are much bigger than the other schools, other than Dixon. Therefore, Newburg and Richland’s losses to Licking can be easily justified and expected, right? If you want your team to be recognized as a truly “elite” and “special” thing, then don’t try to justify losses because of school enrollment.

Charley Parker will do a fantastic job at Rolla. With him as coach, I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see Rolla go all the way. Nancy Ward has large shoes to fill at Richland. And I’m not denigrating Nancy at all, but I see a lot of talent in Charley Parker as a coach and I look for him to bring out Rolla’s full potential. And Rolla has a BUNCH OF TALENT. They were lucky to get him.

Also, am I the only person shocked to see Crocker with the seventh seed in the Frisco Tournament? Rich Mueller is a fantastic coach and I think he will surprise a lot of people this year. Evidently the Frisco coaches must not have very high expectations given that they seeded the Lady Lions seventh. I’ll be very surprised to see them finish that low.

About “have an idea’s” comment about Newburg’s success with a first year coach, they should be pretty successful under her. Even though she’s just in her first year, it wouldn’t take much to be an improvement over what they had the past couple years. But I’m not too sure any coach, first year or not, would be successful coaching Newburg against Licking this year. I totally agree with “Hoopsquad20” when he said the old coach never seemed to want to be there. Therefore, I doubt he poured much heart and soul into the team. If he really wanted to be there and have success, he would’ve stuck around, especially knowing that Newburg had some talent coming up. But he also left a lot of talent behind when he left Mt. View-Liberty to take the job at Newburg. So maybe he just likes to travel and get a change of scenery.

The former Newburg coach is nomadic. I had heard he left to go to the Springfield area because of personal reasons.

Comments or opinions?

Newburg has all 5 starters back, and only one of them is a senior. They have 11 players on varsity this year. Next year could be their year. They lack height is a weakness I see.

After a week of play (according to Maxpreps)

Newburg 2-0 (wins over Summersville and Russellville)
Crocker 2-0 (wins over Tuscumbia and Stover)
Licking 1-0 (win over St. James)
Stoutland 0-1 (Macks Creek)
Laquey 0-1 (Climax Springs)
Plato 0-1 (Salem)
Dixon 0-1 (Steelville)
Iberia 0-2 (Eugene and Linn)
Richland 0-0

Licking over Plato by 20
Crocker over Newburg in big upset IF the same officials from Saturday are calling Monday. Everyone will be fouled out on touch fouls that shouldn't have been called.
Richland by 30 over Iberia.

Did you not think the officiating was good? Was it just the Girls' officials, or the ones for the Boys' games as well?

The girls games were called like a jr high game. Cant trap, cant pressure and dont even think about blocking a shot....all fouls.

Idk, I thought they let #42 from Dixon block shots all night. I thought it was more a single official over the group of officials, but here's the other side of it. When you get to 3 or 4 fouls, the players also have to play smart. If I recall, the 5th foul on #25 from Dixon, she just ran into the girl from Stoutland.

That kind of officiating really hurts the girls game. Some officials call it the same or close to a boys game, but others call it like jr high. Not only does that make for a horrible game to watch, teams cannot consistently play certain ways because some nights officials just won't let them. Players have to adjust to the official but there is no good way to adjust to every bump or touch being called.

There seems to be a little jealousy from people about the former Newburg coach. He took the 4th or 5th most talented team last year and somehow put no effort in and finished 2nd in the conference...wow, how lucky he was. There is a bunch of issues at Newburg, lead by a former administrator that wants the school to fail. That is a tough place to be and it will show itself over the course of this year and next year.

Low numbers hurt Newburg last year as well. I don’t know much about the coach, but I do know he benefited from adding two really good freshman. Nothing against him? I really don’t know much about him.

Scores from tonight's action

#1 Licking 75
#8 Plato 44

Licking hit I think 17 3s in this game.

#2 Newburg 50
#7 Crocker 33

#3 Richland 62
#6 Iberia 27

The best game of the tournament is probably going to be the Newburg vs Richland semifinals. It's hard to imagine either of them knocking off Licking if they are hitting 10-20 three pointers a game. Their guards will beat people man to man, but they will shoot zones to death.
