Class 1 Hoops...Predictions, top 10 contenders, and Can't Miss Matchups

YDKM...You mentioned Braymer vs Hamilton? Work to be done FIRST...the Bobcats have to win their rematch with Trenton on Thursday (9:00 pm). (you did say potential though).
I think this could be a very competitive game. Game 1 in December went decisively to Trenton (Gallatin Tournament). Trenton's length in their zone defense frustrated Braymer last time.
I believe Braymer is playing much better now than then...occasionally losing their composure still causes them some problems. Can play with anyone on a given night.

Hugggge tournament week across the area.

Potential Stanberry vs North Andrew III would be fun.....watch out though.
Don't think the Cardinals will forget the celebration upon their loss last Tuesday.
Two neighborly rivals from football and basketball....fun to watch.

Jefferson and Mound City will go again in pool play at North Platte on Wednesday.
Mercer and Northwestern boys might be a high scoring affair on Thursday at Meadville.
Let's see how Maryville boys fight back after a heart breaking 1 point loss to Benton....they could have a rival game with Chillicothe in the Cameron Tournament.

Your thoughts on Braymer were correct. It appears that Trenton opened the flood gates in the second half and torched the Bobcats. We will see if that gives them a chip on their shoulder for that big game coming next week against Stanberry. It seems Trenton did a great job of shutting down Braymer's scorers just like the first matchup.

Winston starts slow but finishes crazy fast to get a 30 point win over SJC after notching 30 points in the 4th quarter to nearly double their game score.

Mound City beats Jefferson 50-49, which was a surprise to me, but Mound City is scrappy and have some young scorers. Mound City plays Mid Buchanan for the title in that one.

Northwestern Takes down Mercer in a high scoring affair and will meet Meadville in the title game of their tournament

It's the time of year for some letdowns and some teams hitting another gear, so who will it be?

We have a great stretch of games coming up.

and a new poll finally:

2016-17 MBCA Boys Basketball Poll (Release 1/26)
2016-2017 Boys' Basketball Poll #7 (Release 1/26)

The MBCA Basketball poll is selected by a panel of coaches representing each of the 8 MBCA districts and each of the five Missouri basketball classes.

Class 1

1 Winston 16-0

2 Walnut Grove 16-1

3 Glasgow 13-1

4 North Andrew 14-1

5 Scott County Central 11-5

6 Hermitage 15-2

7 Advance 14-3

8 Greenfield 13-3

9 Braymer 12-3

10 Mercer 12-2

I think Mercer and Braymer will be on the bubble for the next one.

Greenfield is playing well right now. They came out of break 6-2, lost to a competitive, but not great, Purdy team after not playing for 2 1/2 weeks by 3. Since then they have won 8 straight, beat a good Butler (C3) team by 5. Their next closest game was beating Stockton (C3) by 10 and Marionville (C2) by 16. Moved up to #8 in Class 1.

Northwestern (Mendon) knocks off Mercer in the semi final and meadville in overtime in the championship at the meadville tournament . Add them to the list of challengers in the NE region!

They are in meadville's district. Look out for them.

Worth mentioning: Advance beat Dexter to win a tournament, and then Risco defeated them yesterday.

There seems to be a three headed monster in the NE, SE, SW, and maybe 4 headed in Nw.

I think next week Risco and Northwestern Mendon should find their way into the top 10.

I have agreed with just about all of your analysis so far this year, but must question your thought on this.

I realize I am a Meadville homer, but bare with me. Meadville was 15-2 coming into this game, with 0 losses to class one teams. They have beaten NW twice already this season, and lost their 3rd game to them in overtime.

Why should this 3rd times a charm, overtime win against Meadville propel them to the top ten, when Meadville has got no love all season?

First off, good on you for owning up to being a Meadville homer :). Prior to this I have called for Meadville and Mercer to get attention, and just by scoreboard alone, it seems Northwestern took out two really good teams, and by scoreboard alone, they can score a lot of points. I also checked MSHSAA for their record which shows them 12-1 (which must be off with two losses to Meadville). Is Meadville the only team to beat them this year?

Braymer had a rough week and Mercer got beat in the semis(as you well know) I think it would be hard for a team to break into the top 10 coming off a loss is all I was thinking. By your account, I would agree Meadville is the favorite still in that district. (Who is hosting that district, btw?)

Until someone knocks them off, by poll and record, it appears Glasgow is king of that quarter until someone gets them. They have it all.

I love that people are dropping in that have mostly been screen watching this season.

Any other thoughts on area teams over there? Are the Eagles excited to get a crack at the Yellowjackets?

Yes, they have suffered 2 losses to Meadville.

Norborne is the host.

Yes, Glasgow is tough. Coach Cropp is doing very well with his Yellowjackets. Meadville will indeed have to be firing on all cylinders when taking on Glasgow, I admit.

I keep score for St. Joe Christian and they will be playing Worth County, Braymer, Winston and North Andrew in the next 3 weeks, so I will get a first hand look at all 4.

North Andrew plays Braymer Friday night in what could decide the GRC West. Worth County has been up and down. I think they live and die by the 3. Winston has dominated their competition, but hasn't played North Andrew, Mercer or Jefferson. But they did win the Gallatin Tournament that Braymer was in beating Trenton 25 after Trenton beat Braymer by 18 giving Braymer their only loss. I think Jefferson is a notch below North Andrew right now, but should win District 16.

Here are my predictions:

District 13: Winston over Braymer
District 14: Mercer over Worth County
District 15: North Andrew over King City
District 16: Jefferson over Nodaway-Holt

Sectional:
Winston over Mercer
North Andrew over Jefferson

Quarterfinal
North Andrew over Winston

Now you've seen them all, correct? I saw your Lions played North Andrew pretty well at their place. Any updates on your playoff predictions in NW mo?

Updated Maxpreps Rankings for Class 1. I think this would change if SCC, Greenfield, Mercer, Mendon (who only has 2 losses I thought?) Glasgow only has one loss as well, and some others would just input their games and updated record. I also think their calculation on Strength of Schedule is off, because by my call Walnut Grove has had a really tough schedule (and will get a boost when then play Fair Play and Hartville as well)

MO Class 1 High School Basketball Rankings

you are right about the records...
note the number of games played on several of these teams.....not sure how current or accurate their information is? Jefferson has played 19 games in reality...listed as 15 ..Northwestern listed at 11 games and Greenfield at 9....is that accurate?
note-NO insult thrown at Jefferson concerning this. They have been playing tough teams and will make anyone nervous in the post-season. They probably are a top 15 Missouri Class 1 team.
Many coaches do not send info to max-preps. It is not an essential part of your job description to give your team stats out on the internet. ha ha
good luck to all.

Some of the schools just don't update their scores...so it is inaccurate in that way. I would agree with your assessment of Jefferson as well. I'd still have them bordering the top 10, but the recent loss to Mound City hurt them a little bit regarding polling I would think. They still have to be the favorite in district 16 and played North Andrew very close earlier this year.

Still think same 4 teams win districts but not sure about second place. I think Winston and North Andrew are a notch above everyone else right now. If Lewis brothers are on, Winston won't be beat, but North Andrew has shooters all over the floor.

10 Mercer 12-2

Agree when it comes to records Braymer will be on that bubble. To take up for them a little they have played some good ball teams. Lost to Stanberry by 3, North Andrew by 1, and class 3 Trenton and Lathrop. North Andrew I have seen and they are solid. I have not seen Winston yet. I know they have great guards but not a lot of height. They did handle Trenton easy but that was weeks ago. I do know Winston has scouted Braymer all season and should make for an interesting dist final.

When you look at Braymer and their scores and stats...when Miller is going well, they win or are in ballgames...when he has an off game..they don't win. He has had some crazy games, but then he will have games where he is barely a factor. Very interesting and dangerous team on a given night.

That is true. I was just looking over that. In three losses they got beat by a avg of 21 points and he only avg 8 ppg. In wins against Lathrop, Plattsburg, and the the close lost to North Andrew he avg 29 ppg. I have alwasy thought if you live by the three you wil end up losing by the three at some point.

How did Greenfield do?

Winston beat Mercer by 15 after a big first half lead and a Mercer comeback

South Holt, who is on the cusp of being ranked (and likely the 2 seed of district 15), won big as well.

Worth County, previously ranked and in Mercer's district, won on a buzzer tip-in over King City.

Jefferson, previously ranked (and favorite to win district) won by 7 over North Nodaway, in a surprisingly close game.

Scott County and Risco win big.

I'm also assuming Walnut Grove won big

Hermitage won big as well

He fouled out in the first half of game against SJC. He only had 3 points. He completely lost his composure getting a technical after 4th foul.

I was not there but I told the officiating was right down as bad as anyone has ever seen. That Braymer had 29 fouls in that game and as a team they avg 12.42 a game. Looking this up Miller avg 1.94 fouls this season and in 102 games played he has 173 fouls total (1.69pg) with 229 blocks and 635 rebounds. Wonder how many fouls SJC had that game? Looks like they singled out a player and his team.

The foul calls were fairly even. Hartigan for SJC also fouled out. Many players for both teams had a lot of fouls The officiating was not that bad, but they did call it close. The Worth County-SJC game was much worse and there were a couple of really bad calls that went against Worth County. Worth County had much more of a reason to be upset than Braymer fans IMO.

When I do the book next, I can tell you exactly how many fouls both had in the Braymer-SJC game.

HOOPS TOURN...I appreciated the calm, rational way you replied to a post that pertained to your team winning a game.

NW MO posts seem to remain supportive and positive for all our teams.
THANKS TO YOU REGULARS.
The constant arguing and negativity between some regions is a bit distasteful.
Yes, this is a public basketball forum...but it's also what we make of it.
And remembering these are kids BEFORE we click POST would be nice.
.
For those that missed the North Andrew vs Stanberry series of games...3 times in a 2 week period....they were great. I didn't have a "dog in that fight" but you can see why these two programs are among our best.

Hermitage lost their 3rd game this season, getting beat in Double Overtime vs. Fair Play.

Should we do a GRC pickem?

I'll start:

I'll Take:

Stanberry over Trenton
North Andrew over Putnam County
Braymer over Maysville
Worth County over Gallatin
King City over Milan in a close one
SJC over South Harrison
Princeton over Pattonsburg
Polo over Albany

When you look at the East and the West, the West has a higher "top end" in my opinion while the East is more consistent and competitive top to bottom.

New Poll:
2016-17 MBCA Boys Basketball Poll (Release 2/2)
2016-2017 Boys' Basketball Poll #8 (Release 2/2)

The MBCA Basketball poll is selected by a panel of coaches representing each of the 8 MBCA districts and each of the five Missouri basketball classes.

Class 1

1 Winston 18-0

2 Walnut Grove 18-2

3 North Andrew 17-1

4 Hermitage 17-2

5 Scott County Central 17-4

6 Glasgow 15-3

7 Greenfield 15-3

8 Advance 17-4

9 Leeton 15-3

10 Mercer 14-3

I'm not sure the Glasgow record is right (mshsaa shows two losses, Lincoln and Fayette). I also think Risco (great record and win over Advance) is more deserving to be on the list than at this point than Leeton, who lost big to Hermitage earlier this year. I also think Meadville and Northwest Mendon should be considered for the 10th slot over Mercer at this point in time, due to recent play.

My Power 8 rankings would be:

1. Winston
2. Walnut Grove
3. Advance (I know, they just lost)
4. Glasgow
5. North Andrew
6. Hermitage
7. Risco
8. Scott County Central

And then I think you could debate a lot about 9-15 or so.

I have North Andrew higher in my polls....

GRC championship?
Should be a great matchup between Trenton and Stanberry.
My question is.....can Stanberry's perimeter guards score against Trenton's long armed zone?

Also...what kind of cheap glue did Stanberry use on their STATE sign on the edge of town?
_TANBERRY,...then.... STA_BERRY

Coach Groomer should check them weekly.

No more trips to the Final Four until you work on your sign building skills.
;-)

lol on the stanberry sign....true story

The three that I picked different are the 3 biggest toss ups IMO. I think Braymer over Maysville will be the biggest mismatch.

Yes I would like to know that. I had heard WC was not happy as well.

Trenton by 15
North Andrew by 15
Braymer by 15
Worth County by 12
King City Win
SJC Win
Princeton Win
Polo Win
The Trenton/Stanberry game should be interesting as nwbball mentioned. Zone against a team that doesn't like to shoot threes, but can at times...size versus speed.

I think Putnam County will have a high scoring boys game. Both teams lead their sides of the GRC in scoring.

If Braymer is on their game, I could see a blowout, but an average night and I think you are dead on. Maysville doesn't have much of an inside presence or anyone who will stop Hall.

Worth County and Gallatin is a game I go back and forth on. Gallatin likes to score, but Worth county's length bothers most teams. Worth County hasn't put up big point totals lately...should be a good game

King City and Milan I think will be a dogfight.

SJC is trending upwards and can play with anyone with their defense, and I think their offense will be too much for South Harrison...I don't think this one will be too close.

Princeton vs. Pattonsburg is a coin flip. Princeton is at home.

these games are going to be majorly in favor of home teams as far as outside factors. All West teams except Stanberry will have split crowds and cheer squads. Should be a fun night of basketball.

It would be neat to see the 275 do something similar...does anyone know if there is a site or a posting somewhere of the 275 league standings?
