Class 1 Hoops...Predictions, top 10 contenders, and Can't Miss Matchups

2016-17 MBCA Boys Basketball Poll (Release 1/5)
2016-2017 Boys' Basketball Poll #3 (Release 1/5)

The MBCA Basketball poll is selected by a panel of coaches representing each of the 8 MBCA districts and each of the five Missouri basketball classes.

Class 1

1 Walnut Grove 12-0

2 Winston 10-0

3 Glasgow 7-0

4 North Andrew 6-0

5 Hermitage 10-1

6 Advance 8-2

7 Scott County Central 7-4

8 Braymer 7-1

9 Jefferson 5-3

10 Greenfield 6-2

-Meadville gets their first loss in a tight game to Marceline 39-38, so 10-1 overall
-Glasgow & Winston still rolling and still look to be top dogs in their quarters
-North Andrew barely Skims by WOCO and Jefferson to stay lossless
-Worth County drops off the list, but gets a big win against class 2 #1 Stanberry Tuesday (which isn't reflected on this poll)

-Walnut Grove gets first loss against a gritty class 4 Logan Rogersville (after pulling away from Hermitage in the second half)...big rematch tomorrow with Hermitage

-Greenfield is 7-4 after a couple of losses to class 2 schools
-Advance plays underdog in the SEMO christmas tourney and about wins the whole thing as the 7 seed out of 16 teams (they are surging)

-Scott County Central still finding their groove after getting 5th in the SEMO tourney
-Braymer has big games coming up with Stanberry, SJC and North Andrew in league after an early loss to Trenton

-Mercer loses their second game of the season to Santa-Fe high school, but should still be in the conversation

Any "Gideons" out there that no one is talking about?

Walnut Grove can still remain #1 with a win over Hermitage.
A loss to a Class 4 school doesn't necessarily diminish their ranking as the #1 Class 1 school.
NW Mo is still messy with North Andrew, Winston, Worth County, Jefferson, Braymer, Mercer all having varying schedules and ups and downs....makes it fun to talk about.

I would strongly agree that Walnut grove has had the strongest schedule of any of the top few teams and should stay number 1. They have handily beat all of their challengers in the region. Tough like nails. Scc and advance has a really tough schedule too. i was hoping to see a meadville vs. Glasgow matchup at Marceline, but meadville had a down game

Hermitage falls by 2 points to walnut grove...officially have to be on watch for that bunch!

Scott county rolls by 22.

Meadville lost third place game at marceline and Glasgow plays in the championship tonight.

Greenfield is 8-3 with losses to Walnut Grove, Purdy, and Marionville.

Marionville has not lost and that game went into OT at the Marionville Tournament. Purdy is a scrappy C2 team that beat McAuley and Greenfield this week.

2016-2017 Final Boys' Basketball Poll (Release 11/21)

The MBCA Basketball poll is selected by a panel of coaches representing each of the 8 MBCA districts and each of the five Missouri basketball classes.

Boys

Class 1

1 Walnut Grove

2 Winston

3 Scott County Central

4 Glasgow

5 Leeton

6 Gideon

7 School of the Ozarks

8 Mercer

9 Advance

10 Jefferson

Thoughts on this? Someone had said school of the Ozarks is class 2, Gideon was very senior heavy, but I guess that's why they play the game :)

2016-2017 Boys' Basketball Poll #5 (Release 1/12)

The MBCA Basketball poll is selected by a panel of coaches representing each of the 8 MBCA districts and each of the five Missouri basketball classes.

Class 1

1 Winston 12-0

2 Walnut Grove 13-1

3 Glasgow 10-0

4 North Andrew 10-0

5 Advance 9-2

6 Scott County Central 9-4

7 Hermitage 11-2

8 Braymer 9-1

9 Jefferson 8-3

10 Leeton 8-2

Congrats to Winston climbing to the top! Leeton sneaking in 10th.

#7 Hermitage wins big over #10 Leeton 65-32...hermitage and walnut grove seem to be in their own class in that quarter...still waiting to see if Meadville will be able to play with Glasgow in NE. Waiting to see how SCC and Advance do down the stretch, of if there is a sleeper down there like Gideon last year. NW quarter is wide open.

NW quarter is very open as you said..... haven't seen a dominate team yet. Winston is probably the best team up here but we won't know for sure til they play someone like Mercer. Anyone can beat anyone any given night up here. It'll be fun to watch down the stretch.

You are correct....it is open......most view North Andrew as a slight favorite in the NW.....deep, athletic, balanced. Winston, Jefferson, Mercer all chasing....and Braymer has been raising eyebrows lately.. Worth County has lost a few lately but still has the pieces to be a factor. Like to go to Stanberry this morning but the roads are starting to ice.

I have no dog in the fight but does Wellsville figure in there somewhere. I believe they won their district last year and have I think everyone back. They play mainly a 2 and 3 schedule

I was just speaking of NW MO. I am not sure which region Wellsville plays out of?

I keep score for St. Joe Christian and they will be playing Worth County, Braymer, Winston and North Andrew in the next 3 weeks, so I will get a first hand look at all 4.

North Andrew plays Braymer Friday night in what could decide the GRC West. Worth County has been up and down. I think they live and die by the 3. Winston has dominated their competition, but hasn't played North Andrew, Mercer or Jefferson. But they did win the Gallatin Tournament that Braymer was in beating Trenton 25 after Trenton beat Braymer by 18 giving Braymer their only loss. I think Jefferson is a notch below North Andrew right now, but should win District 16.

Here are my predictions:

District 13: Winston over Braymer
District 14: Mercer over Worth County
District 15: North Andrew over King City
District 16: Jefferson over Nodaway-Holt

Sectional:
Winston over Mercer
North Andrew over Jefferson

Quarterfinal
North Andrew over Winston

They won their district last year and lost to Mercer in the first round by two. They played mostly Soph's last year. Sounds like maybe NW MO. might have to go thru them

Wellsville is in District 10. Last year Wellsville was in District 11 and Mercer was in District 12. NW Missouri districts would be 13 to 16. Wellsville is nowhere near NW Missouri. The only reason they played Mercer last year was because Mercer got pushed to District 12.

North Andrew looks more dangerous now then ever, after beating Stanberry today 72-64 in the Stanberry Tournament championship. I'll give them the nod as of right now to go to Columbia in March.

So wellsville will be in Glasgow and meadville's quarter. Surprised we haven't heard about them until now.

North Andrew has Stanberry again Tuesday in conference play and Braymer Friday as hoops said. Braymer is playing really well after winning the Lathrop tournament. Big stretch for those teams as Braymer will have Stanberry in a few weeks as well.

Braymer seems to be up and down in their scores and margin of victory, but they run a tough zone and have two very good sized athletic kids. If things go well for them, they heat up like a microwave. I saw on maxpreps where miller was 7-9 from 3 against Lathrop. Winston will love their zone though I think. I heard they hit a ton of 3s to win the Osborn tourney championship by over 50. They are also a microwave.

Worth County is extremely talented and can get anyone on any night. Long, strong, athletic, and skilled. They are down one of their guards right now it seems. It will be interesting to see how they handle it down the stretch.

I don't see anyone getting Jefferson in district 16, and after playing North Andrew closer than anyone so far, look out for them. They are going to be a tough out in a playoff situation. I don't think South Holt's press will rattle the better teams, but they are playing well right now too.

Don't know much about Mercer, but they can score points and held in against some bigger schools in their losses.

Just did my Wellsville homework on maxpreps: 7-5 record. They beat a westran team that was common to Glasgow. Glasgow beat westran by a similar amount. I also saw they lost to a 12-1 Monroe city team who is class 3. Must be a pretty tough schedule.

Still wouldn't count out Greenfield in the SW area. 10-3 and playing better, beat a top 5 Class 2 Marionville and beat Class 3 Stockton last week. Hermitage lost by 20 to WG the first game and by 2 the second game. Greenfield is playing better than they did against WG in the 2nd week of December.

Wellsville will have to get out of districts first. They have lost to a district opponent this year so most likely they will have some resistance there first.

If we were doing a pickem today: I'd go as follows: (forgive me if there is some oversight on some of the South MO schools in particular)

SEMO
D1: SCC (but risco is having a great year)
D2: Advance-coming on strong lately..although just dropped a game to a bigger school, have size, ball handling, and shooting
D3: South Iron- Best record in this district where most teams have losing records
D4: Honestly no idea...this district has teams that are all having rough seasons so far

SWMO
D5: Walnut Grove-very tough to beat
D6: Montrose- 9-4 & strong showing against district opponents so far-plus a sweet name
D7: Hermitage-senior laden and ready to get back to playing WG
D8: Green Ridge - sub .500 record, but beat Leeton head to head, who would be the other option in D8

NEMO
D9: Glasgow-Senior heavy, experienced, great team and well coached
D10: Wellsville, BUT Chamois beat them head to head EARLY in the season, and North Shelby around
D11: Novinger, but Green City, Bevier, and Linn County all possible-maybe most wide open district in the state
D12: Meadville-Well coached, history of success

NW MO
D13: Winston...but Braymer can be very tough
D14: Worth County...but Mercer is formidable
D15: North Andrew
D16: Jefferson-Mound City possible challenger on a good night

Sectionals:
SE MO: Advance over SCC (SCC got first head to head win, but rematch on 1/30)
South Iron over whoever

SW MO: Walnut Grove over Montrose- Dominant team turns on their post-season game
Hermitage over Green Ridge -Wanting that rematch with WG bad

NEMO: Glasgow over Wellsville-no upsets here
Meadville over Novinger-Meadville hits their postseason stride

NWMO: Winston over Worth county (WOCO Upset special possible here!)
North Andrew over Jefferson (Jefferson upset special though!)

Quarters:

Advance over South Iron-Advance Easily
Walnut Grove over Hermitage-Dogfight
Glasgow over Meadville-Glasgow is just too experienced and versatile
Winston over North Andrew-Dogfight in only potential matchup of the year

Semis: Advance over Winston (flip a coin on this one, who knows)
Walnut Grove over Glasgow- Walnut grove brings the uptempo and Glasgow slows down, clogs up and runs offense.

Title Game: Advance over Walnut grove- Advance's size and versatility and experience against the press all season in SEMO will prove very useful and take WG out of their game unless WG lights it up from the arc.

Disclaimer: Still TONS of basketball to be played..but this would be my pick right now. I also realize I have a team who lost to SCC as state champion..I just like how they have "come on" lately.

St. Joe Christian defeated Braymer 59-43. A LOT of fouls were called. Hartigan fouled out for SJC. Miller fouled out for Braymer (IN THE FIRST HALF). He got a technical after getting his fourth foul. Braymer also had two other players foul out. SJC has been improving defeating East Atchison by 20 Friday night and playing their best game of the year tonight. They play Worth County on Thursday in a game featuring two teams that have pulled off some big wins, but also have had disappointing losses. This game could go either way.

hermitage squeaked their game out against Fair play tonight, would have been a big upset. Stanberry beat North andrew to give them their first loss. Jefferson lost to an out of state team giving them another loss..it won't be reflected this week I guess, but that coaches poll is going to start looking different.

We are getting into rivalry and conference games across the state and it will be interesting to see who survives :)

Wouldn't have called it a big upset at all. Fair Play is good, very well coached, and returned almost everyone from a 19 win team last year.

I stand corrected. So, are there any challenges coming up on Hermitage's schedule? What was the difference in the close game they played WG versus the first time? Can they get them in the next matchup?

They do have to play Fair Play again on February 1 for a makeup game. At Wheatland might be tough on February 17th. That was a 6 point game the first time. Other than those two, they should win out pretty easily.

Ok hoops, do we need to start talking about your lions? Getting hot at the right time and holding worth county to 34 points? Got to be a story.
They have been a good defensive team all year. They lead the GRC in defensive scoring at 42 points per game. They hit some key shots and got some fortunate calls go their way tonight. With Albany coming in tomorrow night, 3 straight conference wins after staring 0-3 is looking very likely.

Pretty good summary and I would have to say I think you are pretty close from what I can gather. Got to shout out to Meadville of course, who now stands at 14-2 and have not lost to a class 1 school. The coach is doing a good job with this young team.

Overall, I think you have studied class 1 very well and I would have to agree, I think the title game will see Advance in it. They are experienced, play up, and have been on the floor at CoMo. Whoever is their rival will have their hands full.

Potential big matchups around the state coming up for class 1 teams:

Winston vs. St. Joseph Christian tonight (although I think Winston cruises like always)
South Holt Potential semi final at King city tourney with stanberry (class 2 ranked) 1/25
Jefferson Potentially meets Mid Buchanan (solid class 2) in NPlatte tournament final 1/26
North Andrew potential rematch 1/28 with stanberry king city championship (1-1 season series)
Advance vs. Risco 1/28 (risco as the 3rd wheel right now in SEMO having a great year)
Braymer vs. Hamilton Potential Hamilton tourney final (hamilton a solid c3(thanks bearcat) school)
Advance vs. SCC on 1/30
Braymer vs. Stanberry 1/30 at Braymer
Mercer vs. Winston 1/31 (battle for the HDC title and the last tester for Winston in their regular season)
Hermitage vs. Fair Play part 2 (3 point game last time)
Glasgow vs. Salisbury 2/2 (Salisbury very good class 2 team)
SCC vs. Charleston 2/8 (Charleston heavily favored, and class 3)
SCC vs. Oran 2/10 (oran a solid C2 school)
Walnut Grove vs. Hartville 2/9 (Hartville the top class 2 team)
Walnut Grove vs. Fair Play 2/14 (C2 fair play having played Hermitage very close)
Meadville vs. Glasgow 2/14 (battle of best teams in NEMO quarter)
Montrose vs. Hermitage 2/14 (battle of potential district champions)
Wheatland vs. Hermitage 2/17 (previous game of 6 point differential)

Who am I missing?
