This came up in another thread but it seemed to be worthy of its own.....

I Googled "Seneca vs Springfield Catholic 1987" to find out what the final score was in that game. I hit this interesting article

http://mosportshalloffame.com/inductees/tom-hodge/

with this quote:

Among the more memorable wins was in 1987 when the Springfield News-Leader billed No. 1 Seneca vs. No. 2 Springfield Catholic as the Game of the Decade, with Seneca winning 56-40. “There was a different hero every minute,” Hodge said.

It just hardly seems possible it was 30 years ago. Webb had yet to claim its first title. Lamar's dynasty.....far off. There were only 5 classes and they still had an "A". The area teams of prominence were Parkwood in early 80's and Seneca in the late 80's.

Any other memories from the list below from 30 years ago? Maybe some participants on this board?

DuBourg, Trinity

DUBOURG FORFEITS TO TRINITY
Citing significant injuries to its roster, DuBourg will forfeit its Archdiocesan Athletic Association game Friday at Trinity.

“It's a shame, it's a shame for the kids,” Trinity athletics director Dan Grumich said. “That's the reward for all their hard work. Playing the games is what the kids want to do.”

DuBourg competes in Class 4 now that it co-ops its football team with Hancock. Sykora said the hope is that Hancock can help bolster the program's numbers going forward. DuBourg had to cancel its junior varsity season because of a lack of participation.

Sykora also is DuBourg's director of admissions.

“We hope to play the rest of the season,” Sykora said. “We were beaten up going into Affton. I've been at DuBourg for seven years and this is the most injuries we've had.”

Grumich said that the loss of the game is tough for Trinity's players, and it's also a blow for the extended Trinity community. The cheerleaders, student body, alumni and fans will have one less home game to watch the most talented team in school history. Since it's inception in 2003, Trinity has won two district championships. Last year's playoff run was the first of its kind in school history. Before last season's 12-1 mark, the Titans' best finish was 8-4 in 2009.

“The experience for the kids who don't play football,” Grumich said. “We only get four or five games at home.”

There's also the lost revenue from admission and concession stand sales. Grumich said it wasn't as significant as the students' experiences, but there is a bit of a financial hit that comes with not turning the lights on Trinity's sensational show Friday night.--

Dubourg, Priory, Vashon

Is there a link to the forfeit announcement? I cannot find one.

Graphic Edge Guy

Priory didn't announce their forfeit publicly. It isn't even noted on their school's It popped up on the twitter accounts of several STL Area sports writers and it came up during a prep sports segment on 550 am radio

crusader_2

Priory lost to Westminster 63-6 on Saturday. Their team must've all come down with an illness, because Priory says they can't field a team and have to forfeit for the safety of their kids. Anyone wanna buy a bridge and believe them? I'm sure a cure will be discovered in time for them to play the following week. It's an outbreak of "Du Bourg-itis".

I'm going to be honest. My guess is DuBourg is going to be able to field a team to play the next week and that who they were going to have to play made this decision convenient.

Hard Rock Corn Frog

Both Dubourg and Vashon played the next week.

MSHSAA STATEMENT ON NATIONAL ANTHEM

MSHSAA Member Schools Administrators and Coaches;

The Missouri State High School Activity Association (MSHSAA) does not have a Bylaw regarding demonstrations and the National Anthem for its member schools. Further, the sport of football allows each team to determine if they are on the field or in the locker room for the National Anthem.Local school policy and practices must determine your approach regarding the National Anthem and individual expression.

I hope coaches will use this opportunity to talk with their players; this shouldn’t be about mimicking professional athletes, but a discussion on why individuals feel so strongly on both sides of this issue. This is a learning opportunity for all those involved in education-based athletics and leaders should take this occasion to teach student-athletes and to discuss the subject at hand and make informed decisions accordingly. Respect is a core principle we teach through sports, and is a key characteristic of learning to become a responsible adult.

Further, here are some recommended do’s and don’ts when dealing with students at your schools:

·Whether one agrees with the action or not, sitting or kneeling during the National Anthem is a protected First Amendment right, and MSHSAA cannot disallow the athlete from sitting or kneeling during the Anthem.

·As a coaching staff, take time to discuss this issue with your school administrators before broaching the topic with your team. You may simply want to talk about why some people choose to sit or take a knee during the Anthem.Show that you are open to the conversation, and use it as a teachable moment.Discuss alternate ways to be active within the political/social process.

·Talk to your team about not reacting to what another team does during the Anthem.Choose to approach the contest with class and with an appropriate measure of competitive spirit.

·If you think you might have a player who is considering sitting or kneeling during the National Anthem, you may consider asking the team member(s) ahead of time to let you know. This would be another great opportunity for open dialogue on the topic.

Ultimately, we must all be open to conversations about this issue and other sensitive topics. There are many diverse opinions each of us can learn from.

Respectfully,

Kerwin Urhahn, Executive Director

Forfeits and scheduling changes

Priory (Class 4 out of STL) has notified Lutheran North (Class 2) that they will not schedule them for at least the next 2 seasons. This is news because they are both members of The Metro League, along with Lutheran South, JBS (both in Class 3), Westminster and MICDS (both in Class 4). Priory feels that they are at "a competitive disadvantage" vs Lutheran North specifically. Interestingly, Priory will continue to play every other team in the conference, including Westminster who beat them this year 63-6. Priory has not won a game vs a conference opponent since 2014 when they went 2-3 in league play.

Biggest Surpises of the year?

I have been surprised by:

1) how bad Kearney's offense was for the first three weeks.
2) how many D1 athletes that Trinity has--and how good their team is.
3) that any Missouri schools lost to Kansas schools in the KC Metro matchups.
4) that Liberty North had such a terrible start to the season under Coach Jones.
5) Liberty, MO is overrated again. You'd think people would learn.
6) that Excelsior Springs is 6-1 (and only loss came by blowing a late lead to Harrisonville)
7) that Blue Springs can't seem to play to their potential.
