We always talk about who has won championships and how many, but I wanted to do some research into who hasn't. It was eye opening to me the number of programs that have never won one.
Currently there's 325 programs playing 11 man football. 91 of those have won at least one. So, only 28% of current programs have a state title in football.
When you break it down by current Class, some other interesting numbers come up.
Class 1 - 23 of 63 have won at least one - 36.5%
Class 2 - 9 of 61 have won at least one - 14.8%
Class 3 - 20 of 63 have won at least one - 31.7%
Class 4 - 16 of 64 have won at least one - 25%
Class 5 - 9 of 44 have won at least one - 20.5%
Class 6 - 14 of 32 have won at least one - 43.8%
There are 18 programs that no longer exist, have dropped to 8-man, or were renamed/co-op into another program that have also won at least one 11 man state title:
DeLaSalle
Tarkio
University High (Warrensburg)
St Mary's (Independence)
Hazelwood
Southwest (KC)
North Shelby
Sumner
Parkwood (Joplin)
Memorial (Joplin)
Greenfield
Hardin-Central
O'Hara
Greenwood
Rock Port
South Holt
North Nodaway
Nodaway/Holt
Perhaps there's a situation or two from above that the evolved program claims one of these, but I am unaware of those situations and threw them out of the analysis.
Again, I'm a little shocked that 234 programs have never won a state title. Additionally, 183 programs have never even played for a state title. That's 56.3%. Mind blowing. More to come...
