West Plains 29 - Hannibal 14 (FINAL)

thank you. we staying in Springfield closest hotel we could reserve
So there are 5 main hotels in WP, Holiday Inn, Hampton Inn, Quality Inn, Baymont Inn & Super 8 I believe. And a Sleep Inn in Willow Springs.

Missouri State-WP was hosting the NJCAA National Volleyball tournament that week/weekend is my understanding. That’s why all the rooms were sold out.

Even the Super 8 was sold out??? 🤣

Some very bad officiating in this game. WP had linemen downfield several times and was only called once. The WRs were blocking downfield before the ball.was thrown or caught and never called. Hannibal WRs were getting tackled in routes, never called. There were several times that WP players were pushing/hitting late....called once on Miller after he got up after a big catch. That one was the least obvious of them all. On the other side, the fumble recovery by Hannibal on WP sideline was clearly out of bounds. Definitely officiating went WP direction. They played a good game, and had some help. If Williams played, Hannibal wins by at least 3 scores.
They called the late hits on WP at least twice, maybe 3 times.
I know for a fact it was called on Miller(he was getting up and shaking a defender off of him on the way up, who then proceeded to flop up into the air and then fall), and then on Hughston for that out bounds sideline hit, which was definitely a penalty but was still way oversold by the ball carrier from Hannibal who literally dove into the WP physical sideline bench(that just seemed so wild to me), and I believe there was another called on WP, just can’t remember who it was.

Even the drug-infested West Plains Motel was sold out, as well as the Sleep Inn in Willow Springs and I believe the hotel down in Thayer was sold out too.
I didn’t check Mountain Home, AR(10-15,000 people, about 45 min away with a bunch of hotels and what not, lake town)

White River (we have a huge business meeting nearby every spring) Trout fishing is very popular this time of year believe it or not so they likely were sold out, too.

i went with family and they forgot that Rolla was on the way and closest he found was Springfield and even branson was booked also.

i am not complaining or nothing but, Mshsaa should make where All Playoff games on saturday's and if they're games over 2+ hours away should be played on a neutral field. i really do feel sorry for the West Plains fans who made the trip up to Hannibal last year.

I can agree with the playing on saturdays with distance but when it comes to home field advantage, especially in the playoffs, I think taking that away wouldn’t be right.

Well let’s not talk about all the blocks in the back and holdings that they missed on Hannibal then. 🤣🤣

The officiating was pretty rough both ways.
I didn't mention the missed holding calls on WP either...yes, the officiating was terrible. At that point in the post season, the officials should be better and not partial to one side.

Partial to one side? What game were you watching?
Somebody sure is salty about a WP win.

i do agree with you on that. i wished they're a way where Quarterfinals games were closer games. Semifinals games are fine for me for long distance games.

If the Friday night game was in hannibal and Hannibal was hosting a volleyball Tournament and All 9 or 10 Hotels in Hannibal was booked West Plains fans would have a difficult time finding a nearby hotel. If West Plains fans taking the St. louis way on Hwy 61 back only hotels would be 1 in Bowling Green, 3 in troy, and 5 in Wentzville and going the Jeff City way would be 3 hotels in Mexico, 1 in Kindom City, and the rest in Jeff City!!!

this past weekend between Classes 1 and 5.

10 Matchups were under 2 hours travel and 10 Matchups were over 2 Hours

8 Games over 2 Hours travel
1 Game over 3 Hours travel
1 game over 4 Hours travel

The one on the sideline was obvious..no way they don't call that one. They called one more towards the end of the game that didn't matter at that point. The officials let that stuff slide early and often. It got really bad late 3rd and into the 4th. WP played a good game, they played hard and physical, dirty at times, and the officials allowed it. I don't have a dog in this fight, so I call it like I see it.

Wouldn’t it actually make more sense to take away the home field advantage? In the districts it makes sense, as the higher seeded team has “earned” it per the points system. But in the state quarters, why should one team get a home field advantage, just because they happen to be on the bottom of the bracket in an even year?

The neutral field thing makes sense, especially for the lengthy trip, but maybe in all cases. And, after all, it’s important enough that they do it for the state championship game.

And, since Mshsaa takes the gate receipts, they can get the venue ready and have staff there to run it all. And both schools can just travel and enjoy the game and atmosphere without either having to work it.

Congrats to the BFE region on finally getting a team to the semifinals!

Williams did not single handily win the game last year. He got quite a bit of help from some awful in game coaching decisions. Let's not forget that part. Zizzers should have won that game in spite of an all world performance.
I am not from West Plains but have attended a few of their games against Camdenton in the past and the Hannibal game last year. I agree 100% that I thought Perkins was outcoached last year. If I remember correctly a 1st or 2nd in goal from like the 1 or 2 and got a delay of game when he had timeouts. And then I just thought they should’ve used the Lair kid more in that game. Just an outsiders opinion.

Yep you remember correctly, and you have a pretty solid opinion shared by many fans.

I feel like Lair was severely underutilized in just about every game his junior and senior year. You’ve got the best 2-way football player that may ever come through WP, but yeah, let’s only give him about 10 touches a game

Probably wanted to cut down on the Personal Fouls

His Junior year(when he was known for a lot of PF, was all on being too rough on the softies)

His senior year he may have had 1 or 2 on D

Either way, I don’t think giving him more touches would have equates to more personal fouls, unless the game has regressed so far that breaking a tackle or burning someone down the sideline is now a personal foul LOL

Let it out. It's ok, just let it all out...

After having to travel 3.5 hours for the quarterfinals, I am glad that we get to host the semi-finals. But I agree. It would be nice if we could go to neutral fields for at least the semifinals (if not quarterfinals) I know OK does it for semis

Iowa does this, too, and it has worked well for many years. OK 6A D1 is having both games at Broken Arrow (a very beautiful stadium by the way) in a day/night doubleheader. In MO if the Dome is never going to be an option I like the smaller University stadiums to host not a fan of Faurot for any round(s).

Who provides the help? Seems fans just want to make it simple for themselves and they don't understand all the work that goes on behind the scenes to have a game.
I think a neutral site someplace in the middle would be nice, but who are you going to get to announce, work the gates do the admin? Who is going to run concessions. There are so many other things that happen when you host that fans just take for granted. Cost money to turn on the lights have PA announces clock operators concession workers gate keeper janitorial. Right now the host school has to provide that. Might be hard to get all them to all travel to a neutral location? And I don't know that anybody from that neutral location that would be willing to work it hard enough to get help and volunteers today.

Incredibly difficult. And yet we pull it off in basketball from the state sectionals on, every year, every class.

College campuses get great exposure from this, and they seem to get the job done. And they are located all throughout the state.

Problem with that is, a lot of times in the post season, games are on Saturdays(same day as college games)and couldn’t do that with college football going on more often that not.
Granted, you could move the games to Fridays but good luck getting to the college on getting people to work a 3-4 hour event on a Friday night.
Then there becomes the issue of, would we be able to get enough colleges with football stadiums in the state to support 22 11-man games on a Friday night?

Missouri State
Mizzou
SEMO
Missouri Southern
Central Missouri
Southwest Baptist
Missouri Western
Northwest Missouri
Truman State
Missouri S&T
Central Methodist
Avila
William Jewell
Evangel(doesn’t even have their own stadium?)
Lindenwood
Culver-Stockton
Washington University
Missouri Baptist

I believe these are the college programs in Missouri.
Some of which don’t even have a stadium
Some of which whose stadiums wouldn’t even support a dedicated Class 2 crowd
Half of which are having games on a Saturday.

Regardless, good luck getting all those colleges to get on board with it.

MSHSAA would have to drop some dough and we know that isn’t happening.

In today's work environment (live it every day here at my business) you make a very good point, something we used to take totally for granted. The key is to make the neutral site geographically sensible. Iowa does theirs in the UNIDome semis and finals. High schools in particularly the Tulsa metro pretty much all have very nice facilities with adequate seating. Ditto Texas and most of the larger Little Rock metro and NW Arkansas schools.

Gotta arrange it all with those neutral sites/schools way in advance to make it work. The other deal perhaps MO needs to look at is rotating the semifinal sites. It was my understanding they made the change because, back in the day, the West side was winning all the titles beating each other on the way to easy wins in the Dome. That is obviously NO LONGER the case at all.

That is definitely the nice part. We have good sized facilities not just in KC, Columbia, STL and Springfield but Cape, Rolla, Joplin, Warrensburg, Kirksville, Maryville and St. Joe to name a few of the bigger ones.
