Top three MO HSFB games you have seen in person all time

No, there are several high level athletes from Smithville going to play college sports--but they do other sports. Baseball and track. For the next two years, it will not be a good match up.
Seems like I've read this from you in the past.... Guess we will see!

1. Carthage vs Webb City 1996 - KT's last year as HC for Webb. Tracey Wistrom's Sr year. WC 9-0, Carthage 2-7. WC won 14-7. Carthage had the ball 4th and goal inside the 5 with around 1 min left. RB would have walked in the endzone but drops the pitch.

2. CJ vs Lamar 2013 - Hitch & Pitch game. Just an unreal game.

3. Carthage vs Jackson 2019 Class 5 State Championship game. Carthage wins it's 1st state championship 27-21 in OT vs a heavily favored Jackson team. Amazing game. Carthage goes up early. Has a 90 yard TD called back early in the 3rd quarter. Jackson starts their comeback. Carthage gets it to OT. 4th and 10 on the 25. Boot pass completed to Schrader who takes it to the 1. Carlton punches it in on the next play for the win.

Webb City at Savannah in the semis. Best Webb comeback ever. Webb at Kearney when Boo blocked 2 field goals for the win. 2015 Webb beating Carl in an absolute downpour for 3 hours. Losing 58 minutes of the game.

That Carthage/Webb game was also in a monsoon!

Played in that Carthage game. Carthage field hadn't been mowed all season it seemed. Like playing in a jungle.

I've got a runner up to the 2011 Staley/LSW game... The 1982 large class final played at Arrowhead Stadium. StL Sumner 32 Rockhurst 22. Sumner played the most impressive wing-t football that I've ever seen at the HS level !
Sumner was a program to be dealt with all the way into the early 90s remember several of those top teams well. How many KC Star sports reporters cried after that one?

The 2002 game was a great one until the Cards seemed to tire out the last 5 minutes. Never will forget the Benny Palmer TD run that basically sealed it. Were we to do top 3 all time HSFB atmospheres that one may be my #1.
If I remember correctly, Webb City had to win one of the best HS football games I have ever seen just to get to the Kearney game. In the Quarterfinals vs Jefferson City Helias. If I remember right, game went into overtime. Webb got the ball first in OT and kicked a field goal. Helias throws a pass and has the ball first and goal from the one or two yard line. Webb City stops Helias 4 plays in a row to win the game on a goal line stand.

Excellent, accurate memory! I was at the Kearney-Marshall quarterfinal that night was never close but was sourcing verbal etc. game updates. Amazing how tech has changed in just 21 years AND amazing how that really seems like just a few years ago to this old man.

Joey knows his stuff when it comes to the athletes in these classes. Yes, he predicted wrong each time but any good fan is going to pick their own team. This year will be very interesting with so many Smithville starters graduating. Kearney had some studs graduate, but they have more talent coming back. Smithville losing their stud QB and RB is really gonna hurt. I'm sure Ambroson will find a way to get more with less. Kearney has the better talent, however Ambroson > Minnick.

Been waiting all offseason to hear from you. Yes Kearney has a lot of key talent back vs. Smithville basically clearing the decks. Were the September 8 regular season game at Kearney would definitely favor them pretty heavily but Smithville has not lost at home to a public school since old nemesis Platte County pulled off the miracle comeback in 2018 (the game I left at half like an idiot).

As for the coaching comparison Smithville is AHEAD of Kearney not better. The fair comparison is where Smithville was going into Ambroson Year Two vs. Kearney's current trajectory with Minnick and Co. In saying that I do wonder what psych effect that blowout loss would have IF Kearney and Smithville indeed do collide in the 2023 playoffs. That may not happen, though, because of the MSHSAA C6 expansion and subsequent filling the other classes. Kearney could very easily be Class 5 this fall.

I stand very strongly by any HC who can do what Logan did at Raytown and hit double digits wins first year at a school where winning is considered an expectation vs. pleasant surprise. As stated since last season concluded I do want to see Kearney move forward in the playoffs, though, something that definitely has been an issue for him so far. Experience, though, will likely take care of that.

Got me running to the stat board: Ambroson hired on in 2015. Smithville went 8-3 with a major blowout loss to Maryville and 16 point loss to aforementioned nemesis Platte County. 2016 virtually identical results 8-3 blown out by both Maryville and Platte County.

Make NOOOOO mistake I admire and respect Jason to the nth degree but you are, just like last year, making a very unfair coaching comparison. Three decades of experience vs. circa one decade with this being Minnick's 7th as a HC.

The Smithville coach is a lame duck with one year remaining before he moves on. Of course, he has less talent. Too bad the run must end on a lackluster year. No, they won't have Grace rolling two 40+ yard TDs on them like last year...they will do just fine rolling them with what they got.

When I made my comparison of Ambroson and Minnick, I shouldn't have made it about the individuals, but the whole coaching staff instead. Minnick did great things at Raytown, and changed the culture at Kearney back to what they were used to in the past. Smithville has a unique situation where their core coaching staff has been together for many years. There are many coaches that could have moved on to be head coaches, but decided instead to stay at Smithville. I just don't think there is a better coaching staff in class 4. Yes, the Kearney coaching staff is good, but they aren't Smithville. Watch the MICDS vs. Smithville game in 2021 and see the adjustments made a halftime by Smithville to win that game in the second half. That is against a guy like Dr. Fred Bouchard who is one of the greatest HS coaches in Missouri. If there is a group of coaches that can find a way to graduate so many great players and beat the talent that Kearney has, its the Smithville staff. Of course, Kearney should be favored this season against Smithville. However, don't be surprised if Smithville outperforms their talent and sneaks up on some teams this year.

Watch the 2020 playoff game of Smithville vs. Helius. Biggest choke call of the year. Fourth down and a right-side trap.
Get a couple of yards game over--on to state, and THAT is the call?

Don't let the hubris blind you from reality.

Great job in the second half of the regular season against K. No adjustments for the ball getting crammed down their throat?

Don't be surprised if K rolls Smithville in game 1.

But the Kearney team are "Cheatin' MFs right?"

I don't know why anyone from Smithville would say Kearney cheated in the playoffs. The end of the game was on autoclock for Smithville. Sometimes I wonder where you get this stuff Joey?

Scoop? Moving on to where?

Run first. #1 is a great place to start. I believe he's the HC's kid?

Minnick, of course, went to Raytown in 2017. The core of Jones' staff went with him to Liberty North. Kearney has lots of very gifted assistants but many are so young. Again back to experience.

Oh, but they cheated in the first game? When K dominated the second half. Took the lead early in the third quarter and never gave it up again?

That was a great coaching job in the second half of the semifinal too. Another second half meltdown by the Warriors. But those coaching adjustments I guess prevented a bigger ass kicking than what they got?

Bottom line: It was a good run of Jimmy's and Joe's for the Warriors, but it is over. The onslaught is coming. No coaching magic is going to change the outcome. Kearney, who won the conference last year, will win it again this year. If they meet in the playoffs, K will win in the playoffs as well.

Need one of our enrollment numbers geniuses to give us an indication whether Kearney stays C4 or moves up.

No knock on Minnick...but man, they just don't come much better than Jason Ambroson. Dude can take his and beat yours, then take yours and beat his. Guy can flat coach.

Absolutely. No doubt about out, with the exceptions that I quoted above. The Helias 4th Q boner call that cost them a state title. The second half of the K game last year. The second half of the St. Mary's game last year. Other than that, he has done good, aided by several exceptional classes of Jimmy's and Joes.

As I have said three years ago here, K has a group of two classes that are juniors and seniors now that have been dominant. They have 14 all-conference starters back, a lot of them will play college football. Last year's senior Smithville class was good. As freshmen, they beat K by a couple TDs.
Not the case with the seniors of this year (This K group beat Smithville by 3+ TDs as Freshman, and the Junior class as Freshmen, that beat Smithville 30-0 in the 3rd Q, and they had to finish with the third string.)

As I said three years ago on here, it won't matter who is coaching them. It won't matter who they play, with the exception of a good quality recruited private school. That is why they are ranked #1, and will be until proven otherwise, or they move to Class 5. Oh yeah, this same group beat the #2 team in Class 5 last year as well.

Even though they ran out of gas and lost the energy, efficiency and attitude Smithville brought right at very heavily favored St. Mary's last November was without a doubt the most impressive performance (especially for circa 2.5 quarters) I've seen in this area since I can remember.

Here is another nugget that supports what you say here: NUMBERS. Smithville's enrollment is smaller than Kearney and much so than Platte County but man do they ever have lots and lots of kids out for FB! Other key, as I pointed out before both Kearney games, is how every single player is working very hard physically. They have the look of a number of elite programs in MO history.

The offensive playcalling matters. Just saying.............:)

A year of experience should cure that. 37 days and counting til we begin to find out!
37 days, every year the countdown is worse than the Christmas wait was in my youth. It seemed like it would never arrive. Only difference was then I had to continue being good just in case. For me and my brother that was always problematic. My dad always claimed we could break a crowbar in a sandbox, so saying we were rambunctious was probably an understatement. Back on topic, yes 5 weeks, lets go!

Actually as of this moment it is 37 days 6 hours and 40 minutes until kickoff! Sorry it's the nerdy Spock in me.............
