The Sticks of Missouri
Basically Christmas Day for basketball...

Class 1 designation is 92 enrollment and down...
District Assignments here: https://www.mshsaa.org/Activities/ClassAndDistrictAssignments.aspx?alg=5&class=1

Some pretty interesting things with new districting (as mentioned otherwise)

-Eminence and Dora in the same District
-Wellington Napoleon (usual class 2 powerhouse) down to C1 and have Winston in D13
-Mound City (up and coming) and North Andrew (3rd place last year) back in the same district

My Way too early (and probably misinformed) C1 Top 10 Poll (with MSHSAA Playoff quarter designation)

1. Eminence...defending champs, returning a ton...nuff said (SEMO D3)
2. Dora.... trio of sophomores led by dynamic scorer Isaac Haney (SEMO D3)
3. Mound City... If you don't know who these guys are, you better find out...great balance of size, strength, and skill (NWMO D15)
4. Winston.. Returning from Sectional birth, always tough (NWMO D13)
5. Jefferson...historically solid program and heavy district favorite (C1 D16)
6. Wellington Napoleon...really really good C2 team from years past down to C1 (NWMO D13)
7. Scott County Central, because they are always playing for titles, not sure about them (SEMO D1)
8.La Plata...another solid C2 program going down to C1 in NEMO D12)
9. St. Elizabeth...will the youngsters break through this year in (SWMO D7)
10. Meadville... another solid program year in and out (NEMO D11)

Others to watch for based on my past experience:

D1: Risco had some pieces a few years ago
D2: South Iron is usually in the mix down in SEMO
D3: two best teams in MO already mentioned
D4: Fair Play down from C2

SE Quarter: Stacked quarter with top 2 teams in the State this year going in. It's a shame they might play the state title game for district title. Scott County will be around too.

D5: No idea, but McAuley Catholic is down from C2 last year? gotta watch those private schools :)
D6. Lakeland (sectionals last year) and Rich Hill (down from C2)
D7: No idea
D8: Leeton (usually a good record)

SW Quarter: This one is WIDE open. No idea about these teams. Seems to be down quite a bit this year (or just without Walnut Grove)

D9: Columbia Independent? (who knows)
D10: No idea
D11: Glasgow is a great program like Jefferson, so they will always be competitive
D12: Not sure.

NEMO Quarter: I think this will be the third strongest quarter behind SEMO and NWMO. It's still very open as I don't see a dominant force in it. Should be fun night after night.

D13: No other teams as WN and Winston will be a battle most likely
D14: Pattonsburg the favorite, but Mercer could be a sleeper here
D15: North Andrew loses all of starting rotation, but has some depth, South Holt has two very good senior guards
D16: Stanberry (c1 champs from 3 years ago) back down to C1

NWMO: Mound City will be the most athletic and skilled of the quarter, but perennial programs like Jefferson, Winston, and Wellington Napoleon are solid challengers. Don't sleep on Pattonsburg or North Andrew either.

Some of my T10 matchups to Watch: (excluding tournaments as they come)

11/17 Meadville @ Glasgow
11/20 Jamestown @ St. Elizabeth
11/27 Lawson (C3) @ Wellington Napoleon
11/29 Wellington Napoleon @ Odessa (C4)
12/7 Jefferson @ Mound City
12/8 Jefferson @ Maryville (C3 school)
12/18 Pattonsburg @ Winston
12/18 North Andrew @ Jefferson
12/20 South Holt @ Jefferson
1/8 Eminence v. Thayer (C2 powerhouse)
1/11 La Plata @ Meadville
1/15 Dora v. Mountain Grove (C3 solid program)
1/24 St. Elizabeth @ Southern Boone (C3)
1/29 Winston @ Mercer
2/1 Dora v. Hartville (C2 Solid program)
2/8 Tarkio (solid C2) @ Mound City
2/14 New Bloomfield (solid c2) @ St. Elizabeth

Plenty of people omitted, and we will see how my top 10 corresponds to MBCA Poll. Let the games begin (soon)

For us old farts in NWMO, this is a bit of a bittersweet season – it's the last season for Jefferson as a separate entity. They're currently in a co-op (known as Platte Valley) with South Nodaway for everything but HS basketball, but effective with the 2019-20 season, that co-op will include HS basketball.

On the flip side, it will probably help with depth in the program and keep them in class 1 at the same time!

I think your kicking Walnut Grove to the curb a season to early. They’ve got some pieces still left on this team. Definitely have been sent a tough direction with an Eminence/Dora in a possible Sectional game but I feel they have a really good chance to win District 4. Just my opinion!!!!!!

coach Meinders still at the helm?

coach Meinders still at the helm?
Yes he is still there and his son All State Guard Dawson Meinders is a Senior. Two starters are still there from last years squad as well as several lettermen from that team. They won’t be as deep as in the previous 4 years but will catch some teams looking past them.

My predictions:

Class 1

1. Eminence.^.defending champs
2. Dora
3. Mound City
4. Slater
5. Wellington Napoleon
6. Concordia
7. Scott County Central
8. Walnut Grove
9. St. Elizabeth
10. Linn County

Why so much love for Slater? No Lakeland or South Iron?

I see more schools in the north of Buffalo to Queen City central region. Slater is in the CAC conference and they are pretty good. Lost a Sr, but still have nice pieces. No personal attachment just know they will be a contender for post season.

Lets see the difference an offseason/graduation/realignment makes... this is LAST YEAR's final poll.
Class 1

1 Eminence 32-1

2 Walnut Grove 22-11

3 North Andrew 29-1

4 Chamois 21-10

5 Advance 24-7

6 Lakeland 26-4

7 Worth County 24-6

8 Jamestown 26-3

9 Winston 25-3

10 Dora 24-6

I know coach will have them playing hard, and I'll bet Dawson gets up a lot of shots! I'll be shocked if they can compete with Dora/Eminence after losing Gilkey and Thomazin.

Definitely will be tough to beat either Dora or Eminence. Coach Meinders will get the most out of what he has and they will compete as much as they can.

Wow, no love for NWMO teams. Thought for sure we’d see Mound City and Worth County

It's very obvious that NWMO either 1) didn't have a voting representative, or 2) the rep doesn't know his/her head from a coconut. I trend toward the former. MBCA has asked for coaches to participate in the process.

PCole.......you are accurate. I know of two veteran pollsters from NWMO that tried to retire from this process. I have been in their ear to help out until they find a replacement or two.
Now get back to writing your column ...dozens of readers are waiting. (Ha ha). Kidding...u do good work.

I think Pattonsburg is going to surprise some people. I predict them to win the GRC West. I think Milan will win the conference however.

Thank you, legendary NWMO coach EL.

With Jefferson’s performance this week, they should be Top 5. They dominated Worth County and Pattonsburg.

Mound City and Jefferson both should be included in the top 10. After a couple more weeks of games we will know more about Wellington Napoleon, Pattonsburg, Winston, SW Livingston and Mercer. They have some games with each other so that will help.

I appreciate the updates...hopefully we can keep up the scores coming in from central/Northeast Missouri.

Anyone have any insight into "southwest" missouri? I saw St. Elizabeth won a tournament.

Eminence will be battling Ranked C3 Springfield Catholic soon I saw, and Mound city and Jefferson (probably the early favorites in NWMO) are playing each other on the 7th to kick off their conference play.

Wellington-Napoleon lost by 1 to Class 4 Odessa and won their opener in their conference tournament as the 2 seed. MSHSAA doesn't have any more scores from that tournament.

Dora beat their second biggest challenger from last year, Thayer by 7.

Winston gets a big win over class 3 to win their 4th consecutive Gallatin Tourney Championship...they will be piling up the wins again this year.

Mound City wins their home tournament over a solid East Atchison (Class 2) team. (freshman and sophomore guards lead them in scoring).

Jefferson thumps Pattonsburg 70-32...they are pretty strong, and Pattonsburg is probably still a favorite to win their district.

Insight by rankings

1 Eminence- rolling so far...play Ranked C3 Springfield Catholic on the 8th

2 Dora- Beat Thayer for a tourney title..undefeated

3 South Iron- Rolled to a tourney title..play Eminence on 2/5..but know nothing else about them

4 Lakeland- 3-0, just don't know about this region

5 Walnut Grove 2-2...they shouldn't be t10. IMO.

6 St Elizabeth- 5-1 with a loss to a C3 licking team that appears solid

7 La Plata- 3-1 with a tourney title and an opening loss to C2 New Franklin who was consolation at Glasgow tourney..

8 Weableau- 0-1 19 point loss to lakeland...not top 10

9 Slater- 4-0 with tourney title...maybe the early frontrunner in NEMO

10 Halfway 3-0..just don't know much about SWMO.

vote-getters
Risco: 1-1
Wellington-Napoleon 1-1 but likely more games not reported. loss was to C4 Odessa
Concordia: 3-1 and a loss to pilot grove (not a good loss)
Mound City: 3-0 very strong. front-runner in NWMO right now, play jefferson really soon (12/7)
Canton: 2-1 with a 55 point loss to bigger Palmrya
North Andrew: 1-0 with victory over C2 West Platte, but remains to be seen where they stand with pretty much all new personnel.

Better get some votes: Jefferson- 4-0 with big win over C3 maryville (before football was over, but still) and Albany tournament title including a 38 point win in final

Winston: 4-0...blew out C3 Trenton in Gallatin final. Very good team.

SCC: I know they finished second at Oran Tournament, but nothing posted on mshsaa. They will be strong, but not sure about strong enough to play with dora or eminence.

My updated top 10

1. Eminence
2. Dora
3. Mound City
4. Slater
5. Jefferson
6. Wellington Napoleon
7. Winston
8. St. Elizabeth
9. South Iron
10. Linn County

still in the mix for sure:
Scott County Central, Halfway (I just don't know them), Lakeland, La Plata, again, need some insight from SWMO...maybe WGTigerdad can give some info

North Andrew shouldn’t be considered. That win over West Platte is not good. Yeah they are Class 2 but not good. Wouldn’t say that’s a big win for them.

Nope. Coach Nichols is a great coach. There is just no talent. They will play hard, but just don’t have the scorer to really make them successful. I love my school, but they are just lacking the talent. Will push some good teams but that’s it
