St. Louis Private Schools vs. Public Schools?

I lived in STL for awhile but not there long enough to understand the school system. Why are the private schools so much more dominant than the public schools and how can so many stay afloat with such low enrollments? I’m assuming many of these athletes are on scholarships as well. We have private schools in KC as well but they are much more spread out between MO and KS and the public schools retain their talent for the most part.
I was always told in STL the two questions you get are “Have you been to a Cardinals game lately?” and “What high school did you go to?” Don’t know if that if that is somewhat true or not.

From an outsider view St. Louis is an old city with lots of old money combined with a large Catholic population.

I can only speak to MICDS, there aren’t any scholarships for football. I think I saw 300 students get financial aid, but the k-12 has 1200 kids so, 900 kids are paying full tuition of 25k- 30k. Also your acceptance is completely separate from your financial aid award, and that award can change every year. I am pretty sure JBS and SLUH are similar to MICDS model as well,

I didn’t realize how much money there was until I got around MICDS money, it’s wild.

That is absolutely no lie. Just a short drive around Huntleigh or Frontenac will tell you all you need to know. A mile or two either direction of 40 between the inner belt and outer belt, oof. Some REAL money floating around.

Asking what school someone went to is a way to immediately know their socio economic status in St Louis.
So, so true. It’s like a passive-aggressive way of judging someone in the STL.

I spent three awesome years there as a young adult. Called Manchester home. Was a fluke away from being there a long, long time. Unfortunately, it’s a place that can’t get out of its own way politically. Until the city and county can come together, and until guys like Same Page are run out on rails, it will always be what it is currently. And it’s a shame, because the potential exists for a great metro area.

That sounds very similar to the Pembroke Hill model in KC.

IMO two things changed the dynamics of STL High School sports because the Suburban West schools AKA Parkways Kirkwoods etc. Were all very competitive and the Suburban North Conference was maybe the toughest at any level in the state 20 years ago. One was CBC decision to move out to west county thus giving them an easy opportunity to pluck students from Suburban North Schools. Once they did Desmet and Chaminade quickly followed suit. The ending of the deseg program in stl hurt many schools such as Mehlville and parkway schools who were regulars in the playoffs.

This caused about 95% of the shift. But I can't deny the CBC claim. Until that building was built, there wasn't really a private worth attending (on a big scale) that was accessible from North Co.

They were on the Myron Piggie special discount plan.
I always got a kick out of their coach. Just sat there in his tweed sports coat and country club haircut watching those guys do their thing. Later found out he was a big Harley guy. Could've knocked me over with a feather. Interesting mix of people and personalities on those teams.

I believe the Rush brothers were staying with Tom Grant and he was picking up the tuition tab.

This is very accurate.

This is correct. No scholarship from the school. Further, Grant used to pay for several students per year--most being non-athletes. He truly was trying to help kids. Good dude according to my brother, who worked for him.
That said, there have been many, many athletes who are on scholarship, but they had to academically qualify in order to be accepted.

That coach also won a state title as a player (along with his brother) at Center High School in the 1970s.

Most would not know, but Jaron was a hell of a QB as a freshman. Led his team to the state semi-finals that year and had a chance to knock off Warsaw at their place.

We kinda crossed the state here but was that at Pembroke in the 1994 2A semifinal?
Yes it was. Lost I believe like 13-9 that year. Had the ball 1st and goal inside the 4 yard line under a minute to go and didn't punch it in. I believe they beat Smithville the game before. Smithville has grown since then.

Prior to the current top notch program I believe that was the Warriors' deepest FB playoff run. According to MSHSAA that score is correct I would have to look up my old records at home (paper pen never scanned to this day LOL) but yeah great memory!

I watched that game. I also watched the first game of that season at Warsaw too. Warsaw just manhandled Pembroke Hill that day. I watched (not knowing who Jaron was at the time) telling a friend "man I bet that kid can hoop" because of his build. Little did I know how good he would become. He absolutely took a beating that day, but continued to get up and play qb

Kareem and Jaron were close to unstoppable, beating the biggest class #1s on a regular basis. You had Javon Crudup and Chris Lindley at Ray South and then Derek Hood & Tyron Lue in these parts leading up to them as well. Special time in KC basketball history.

So the same conversation about his affinity for Harleys lead to that little tidbit too. Again, could've knocked me over with a feather. Sometimes books are nothing like their covers.

Back then only usually got to do holiday games but I believe you.
That was the game that is on Spectrum Sports occasionally, still. Deric Cofield hit three threes in the last minute to tie the game and Ray South won in OT. The LSHS Field House was packed with people sitting on the floor on the baselines and sidelines. It was full by halftime of the JV game.

The old old American Cablevision days. I will check that out this winter because Spectrum often replays all the classics...........
