Interesting Article. https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2020/06/will-schools-reopen-fall/613468/

I will sum up. This whole situation sucks for every stakeholder involved in education.
My wife and I talk everyday and it seems to be, "But, How will they......". The more I keep hearing the more districts are giving parents the choice to choose to send or not to send.

You either turn a blind eye to the fact that children are going to be healthy through this even if they catch it, but knowingly are going to act as a swarm of bees/locusts in transmitting this disease to every corner of their respective counties and infecting those less fortunate
or......
you create a very complicated system for educating young people. The virtual schooling isn't a joke but it isn't far from it. Many districts didn't take grades, because of equity issues, which was a disaster for many. You can pass on basic low level skills, but collaboration, critical thinking, creativity, problem solving is very difficult through a computer. Kids are definitely experiencing a long term brain drain and obesity from lack of physical activity will get worse. No competition, teamwork, etc because there won't be sports if we are doing virtual or hybrid. Elementary kids are still learning the building blocks of life including socializing. Them missing a year in person will be devastating (let alone the logistics of leaving a 7 year old at home).

Pick your poison. It all sucks. I pick the first choice, have the kids wear masks and build a plexiglass pod for all the bus drivers, and hope for the best.

The long term ramifications of the depressed property values from homes and closed commercial real estate will be felt in a couple years when taxes are reassessed. That is a major long term problem.

It all sucks. Been waiting for my kids to get to middle school to participate in athletics and other extracurricular activities. At least they aren't seniors. I do think you will see parents reclassify their children (not sure if that would fly at the high school level) and it won't be just for sports, but actually make up for lost education.

Children may be healthy and little affected by the virus, but the teachers are not. The average age of a teacher in Missouri is 40. We are also not all a healthy group. We can do everything in our power while at school to be safe from the virus but we have zero control when the students leave. You’ve seen how well that age group (most age groups) are following social distancing and mask guidelines. People are also not fully aware of some of those underlying health issues and the virus exposes them.
I am all for starting school in person in the fall. I want to go back. My students need me and my colleagues. They need the structure, the support and often the love we provide. I also know that in order to do so with a higher degree of safety (this virus is more dangerous than some people want to admit), it may have to be with an adapted schedule/plan/some virtual learning. It sucks. I get it. No one likes it. People always blame us anyway so we have to do what we have to do.

Agree completely. I'm a relationship first teacher and absolutely hated virtual schooling.
There are so many teachers in both of our schools that put them in the "at risk" category. I think I'm in really good shape, but I grew up with chronic asthma and my wife has had her own respiratory issues. People with diabetes seem to really get hit hard. My mortgage lady ended up in the ICU, her husband lost his sense of smell. All of us are in our 40s.
Really curious if the districts try to get teachers to sign hold harmless letters. Will be tough to get around the unions. My wife's district already told teachers that wanted to only teach virtually that they could not do that. Unprecedented times.

The students' parents need to step up. Set an example this summer. Wear masks, social distance, wash your hands, monitor your kids activities so they don't redo Memorial Day weekend. You're right 56, kids will never get over missing these formative years.

In St Francois county 85% of the people are carrying on as if Covid-19 never existed. I drove to Cape Girardeau yesterday to watch niece/nephews play volleyball/flag football at the SportsPlex. If there is an outbreak in SEMO, that place will be the super spreader.

I’m saying we’re going to have HS football this fall but it’s more hope-based than reality-based. I don’t know how schools will preach social distancing during school and then say it’s ok to tackle each other at 3:00.

They said at the beginning of this that the freedom we have in the USA would be used against us. This rugged individualism that is embedded in our culture is showing through in the worst possible way. Seriously, I don't wear a mask for myself, it's because I don't want to infect others especially my loved ones. Imagine infecting your parents or grandparents and they die or get really sick, because you were too selfish to take the most basic precautions going to a tournament or grocery store.

Wait till a kid or teacher gets it in the fall and dies. All hells breaking loose. I know a teacher in one district. They have been told they are scaring kids wearing a mask while getting ready for prom yesterday. Why in hell are they having prom anyway. Are their fragil psyche not able to handle no prom. Then they are having people sign waivers for graduation tomorrow.

Those waivers are worthless anyways and are just to discourage ppl to sue. Minors rights can’t be waived unless under a very specific set of circumstances I honestly think until districts figure out if they are liable if a kid gets it,
the urban districts will play it safe and the rural districts will forge ahead

Jackson County (KC) just imposed mandatory masks in public beginning tomorrow. Kansas governor requiring it for the whole state. Who knows how long this will last. Had they done this a month ago, we might have started turning the corner by now just in time for fall sports in a month.

What's the penalty if you don't comply?

Depends on you. Business will be fined if they don’t make you. If you just leave, nothing. If you refuse, you’ll be charged with trespassing.

Carthage just went ahead and said 'screw it' and canceled all remaining summer school and weight training at all buildings after 3 more kids in the jr high tested positive. Weights has been on and off multiple times. One school had already been canceled.

Can you share where you saw closed weights too? The stuff I saw yesterday just said closed the middle school.

I believe it is only KC. The rest of the county is still status quo.

I stand corrected. KC did it starting Monday the 29th and the county will do it July 1.

This is where I get lost. I'm all for safety. We live in Lee's Summit, and I wear a mask in Walmart or wherever. But Lee's Summit isn't the same as some very rural areas. I guess, maybe, if it's just indoors in public places. But then the debate begins if a private business is a "public" place. I guess the ordinances are enforceable, but it just seems to not be a standard from one place to the next. Seems there are different sets of rules given where you are. I'm always a fan of local control, especially now since we seem to have a bit better grasp of what we're dealing with. Then again, if you're talking about masks in a school building...just seems like that's not going to work. I have talked to about a dozen doctors and nurses. None are experts, but certainly they're health professionals. All have the same response. I wouldn't want it. But it's being totally overblown, and the media is controlling the narrative. Eliciting fear, for whatever reason. It's brutal on the elderly and those with pre-existing conditions. For everyone else, it's a nasty virus but certainly not one with lethal effects.

It's going to magically clear up the second week of November...

Yeah, that's the thing that pi$$es me off to no end. Both parties have made it political somehow. Maybe the media forced their hand. Who knows. But it's really unfortunate. And I blame both sides. I know that's not the cool thing to do now. Everybody is supposed to pick a side and point fingers and pump agendas. It's really exhausting. I hope, if nothing else, all of this garbage brings about a third party that can create a centrist view. You know, one born of reason rather party affiliation. I swear, if this is some big media ploy to get Trump out of office (and I don't think it is)...Wouldn't it just be simpler for the Dems to run someone who isn't literally suffering from diminished mental capacity...or the biggest b*&ch on the face of the planet? It's just not hard. You'd have a ton of sensible minded people who previously picked the lesser of two evils, and actually hand them an acceptable candidate. I just can't believe our society is so ignorant as to not vote for someone based on party affiliation. Especially in times like this, where it seems like the entire country is begging for some sort of solution, one way or the other.
