School this Fall

How can we have a football practice if we have to maintain social distancing/mask wearing all day long in the classroom?

I get that life has to go on, can’t live under a rock, etc. but schools were shut down in mid March. What would we say is really diff now than it was then but we are pushing to reopen schools?

Trump trying to score political points that the virus is under control and everything is returning to normal, and if a school district doesn't agree he threatens to withhold money.

Agree on that. It doesn’t make any sense if nothing has changed why we would go back. I get the strangeness of it is prevalent and going up in certain areas, and almost nonexistent in others. I don’t envy any administrator now. They are earning their money making this decision.

I’m not up for a political debate or arguing the severity of it....But more testing now will yield more positives, some of which I’ve known to show no symptoms. Also, we’re learning more about the virus every day as compared to what we knew in March.

The last thing we(teachers) need to do is get on social media and complain about our work environment, when the majority of the country was still expected to go to work. It’s the equivalent of teachers complaining about getting out too late on snow days. It’s just not a good look to the rest of the tax payers.

Independence announced the same yesterday. My wife just told me you can not do sports if you elect that option there.
I teach high school, and believe me that virtual schooling will be extremely popular with that age group. Not the athletes per say, but I know a lot of students that thought high school was a waste of time and would of chose that just so they could set their own hours. They don't have to be there by 7am and can have a job. When you go to bed at 1 or 2 on a consistent basis that would sound very intriguing.

Yeah. You can't not go to school and be afraid of being around everyone there, and still say its ok to be around everyone at practice when your even closer with the contact. Your either worried about picking up the virus or your not at school You can't pick only certain parts of school your worried about it

ALM is not the answer, except in certain situations like snow days etc...Otherwise there is no replacement for in class learning.

Kids need to be in class, even the high school aged kids....

Especially the high school kids just as much. Different ages but different parts of life. High school kids by no means have it all figure out.

Looking back did all the school really need to shut down in March? We shut everybody down in March and in some rural counties they didn't have a single case until June. People now have Quarantine hangover because of that.
I think some rural areas will probable open back up and have no issues but other areas might struggle to control it depending on who all travels into that area for jobs and such. But what happens when you introduce sports and you have yellow buses going all over the state, possibly bringing it into areas, not knowing that somebody is infected and not tested positive yet? The incubation period is so long that is the issue.

That is an interesting observation. I just drove 40 minutes to Lexington (small town) to their DMV, because the ones in Kansas City have 3-5 hour waits. There was still a 2 hour wait, and I realized that over half the people there were from the Kansas City area. The others appeared to be elderly locals. Also, their was no face mask restriction in place. Curious how that dynamic plays out through the rest of the year.

Death tends to hit a lot harder when it's close to home. Seeing the death tolls and cases rising in other states easily falls into out of sight, out of mind. Unfortunately, it might take some people losing someone close to them before the majority of people start taking this seriously.

I totally agree that its seems to be different when it "hits close to home" My brother lost a longtime friend and classmate yesterday... But aren't the overall Death totals going down every week, and have been for a while? And, have continued to drop even with the spikes in cases.... I mean, if there is something positive, that is at least something.

This is something I sort of alluded to when @Eagles_Ball and I were having a back and forth, and for everyone's sake I don't wanna drag us back into a wall of text battle haha, but regardless of how this affects the kids we also have to consider everyone they come in contact with as well. That's where I think the issue is always going to be.

Sponsoring events that inadvertently promote the spread of a possibly fatal virus which presently has no vaccine is always goning to potentially leave schools on the hook. There's just no way around that. I've seen some discussion of liability waivers but those are only enforceable up to an extent, what happens if the virus suddenly takes a turn and gets worse? I think at that point the validity of waivers would be null and void because the pretense they were signed under is totally different. That's sort of an unlikely scenario but I think schools would tend to think it's not worth the risk.

Believe me I don't want fall sports cancelled, if I lost my SR year saying I'd be crushed would be a gross understatement. I'm just trying to be pragmatic.

Virginia just announced today that they are canceling hs football in their state this fall.

Where did you see that? I just read they were pushing the decision. I just heard Kansas is pushing the start of achool until after Labor Day

I would move all the fall sports to winter and spring depending on what they are. Don't cancel anything permanently. Some coaches will lose one of their stipends if there is overlap, but for the kids it might be the carrot that keeps them engaged. Canceling the sports now would cause so many middle and high schoolers to check out from day one.

Has anyone heard that 20 kids from the Jasper summer weights program tested positive?

Glendale has a positive test and has suspended football work outs for 14 days.

He was talking about the kids and he is correct.
We cant shut down our economy and society because of this mess, It could easily be years before it is eradicated. How long do you want your kids to live in a closet in fear?? I would be fine with not allowing anyone into games if they didn't want to wear a mask. Lexan faceshields on all helmets and go for it.

How could anyone ever prove in a court of law where they contracted a virus from??? Let them sue
Im pretty sure the insurance companies dont share your bravado.

"Sir could you explain to me why your district imposed a mask order and required students to sit 6 feet apart?"

"Your honor I request a recess."

It’s called contact tracing.
But a person could easily have been in contact with a dozen different people at a dozen different places who had the virus. How do you prove which one you contracted it from??

Very good chance next Coronavirus Aid Bill from Washington will be passed with a hold harmless law that shields all businesses and schools from any liability do to Covid-19 so its probably a moot point

It will be interesting to see if McConnell gets that in. I can't see him blocking the welfare for that. Too close to election time.

Is that something we should really be doing? If I'm required to wear a mask in WALMART does it make sense to force people into a room with 25 other people and hope for the best?

Isn't there a shot coming soon? Why the rush?

Oh wait....

Here is a governor that extended the start of school so the tourist towns could have their high school workers

I read an article in USA Today that showed 138,000 cases under age 18 and 228 deaths in the U.S. for that age group. That seems like a small number, but that is more than one in a thousand dying. When it put it that way it made me nervous.

What is the number for other diseases?
