Big picture, he wasn't a good enough player, that impacted the outcome of games in a way that withstands criticism, and didn't communicate his goals. I see him as a whiny little spoiled rich kid, with a hollow reductionist fairy tale trying to simplify a problem that plagues all nations, which is stupidity.
If he really wanted to suffer for his cause, he'd have quit the game and refused to play professional football in a oppressive nation that is killing people because of the color of their skin.
