Went to both games and for the first 6 innings it was same old same old. Errors, base running blunders just bad bad baseball, but then boom and here we are at .500 which they got there much quicker than I thought they would. Pushes my record to .500 also for games attended (2-2) Good to be back

Dear Mike Matheny:

When you have a runner on second.
That is called "being in scoring position".
Bunting in that situation is giving up one of your three outs and not scoring the man who is already "in scoring position".

Now if you must bunt with a man on second, understand its a difficult position for a runner who wants to get a nice jump so he isnt thrown out at third. If the batter misses the ball it can be difficult to get back to the base. Most players can handle that situation. Wong is an unsteady, basically bad baserunner. Putting him in that situation is stupid. Its on you, Mike. Put your people in position to succeed. You drive me insane!!!

While I'm not a fan of bunting with a non-pitcher in many situations, I have to ask if there were 0 outs in this scenario since I didn't see it. If so, I can at least understand the thought process here. Otherwise, fundamentally this team has been just hard to watch so far this year. Hopefully it improves or it will be a long season.

If he's on 2nd he ain't gonna score on a fly ball out or an error. As bad as this team has been with risp you need to get that runner to 3rd with less than 2 outs. It's not on Matheny if a fast major league player can't get to 3rd on a bunt.

Do you have a better chance of hitting a single with three batters or two? The correct answer is three.

And are the cardinals good at doing those things when there is already an out? They suck at it. Pop ups. K's. Dont give up your out.
Can you score from 2nd on a wild pitch, past ball or a ground ball booted by an infielder? Cards aren't too bad at sac flies but you can't get those with a runner on 2nd. You new kinda baseball folks drive me nuts!

If your point guard shoots 5% on three pointers do you tell her to keep shooting them?

If your chance of scoring is greater using all three outs instead of giving up one, you should not bunt. And in this case its true.
Its not WAR or some convoluted statistic. Its simple percentages.

Quit doing that Ducky now I'm confused:confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused:

Based on that tool, it looks like your chance to score one run in an inning goes up slightly if you bunt the guy over but your chance of scoring multiple runs in that inning goes down when you give up that out.

Obviously game score, inning, the bunters and runners skills should be considered also.

Ok then, that clears everything up:cool:

Duck that result is intuitive as well. Of course you have a lower chance to score more than one run. You lost the chance to put the bunter on base.
