BIG 8

1. They won't save the money because who is Nixa going to call when they need 18 non conference basketball games? They are going to call the Joplin schools.

2. I just looked at Nixa's softball schedule. Of the SPS schools they scheduled Kickapoo. That is it. They didn't even schedule Glendale. If they were worried about travel they would schedule all 5 now. They are allowed to play now.
If you want to use Nixa in a micro view of all of this...here you go. It's the SPS schools minus Poo that don't want to schedule them. They know it's a loss. But if SPS loses their conference, then they're kind of forced into this change. So Nixa swaps out 1 hour to 1.5 hour drives for conference games to 10-15 mins. And guess who won't want to schedule Nixa? You guessed it...the "Joplin schools"!!! Think Neosho wants that arse waxing? Take a look at Webb's non-con bball schedule. Think they're going to sign up, willingly, to get hammered by Nixa? So, in effect, Nixa swaps long conf rides for across town. And they still travel to KC or NWA for conf games. I can draw it on a map for you if you like. Or, let's say Neosho and Webb and CJ are willing to sign up for their annual beat down. Then Nixa has just swapped out 3-5 trips to NWA or KC for Joplin. See? It's a win either way.

You would be correct on both accounts. And we have met before. Mutual connection with your wife's family lol. One of your posts recently made me realize it.
When did we meet? I'm trying to remember and just drawing a huge blank.

From what I heard the biggest issue both Conferences have was the size difference between the biggest and smallest members. Number 2 issue was travel time . Thats why I think it will go Large division, then East and West.
From what I have been hearing for the last year, this is spot on. Hearing 3 smaller divisions with automatic (rivalry) and rotational crossover games. For sports like Basketball there would be no divisions, Just one big division.

I know CJ played the COC Springfield schools in a lot of sports before CJ joining the COC. I am just not convinced that schools that are willing to go to Illinois (Ozark) care about travel.

I think this is correct. These schools care about both competition and travel but they care about competition more.

I think the issue isn't travel but travel during the school week. Big difference in going to KC or Stl on a Friday or Saturday and getting home at Midnight on a Tuesday. Less about expense of travel and more about kids missing class to leave or being home late to go to school the next day.

Help me out here...Competition...Do you honestly think the Joplin 5 offer more in competition than the SPS 5? Like across the board actual competition? Or are you just stuck talking about football? You might think it runs all of this, but I can assure you it doesn't. While the west schools view football as king and wear their 1985 mesh jerseys to games, that's hardly how it works on the east side.

Soooooooo, because Ozark's volleyball team makes one weekend trip to Illinois that just means none of these schools care about travel over the course of 20+ different activities and 10 months? That's an interesting viewpoint.

Now see, here is someone that is actually able to look at the big picture. Also someone who's not personally concerned about the future of the Joplin 5 and trying to do anything they can to rationalize them not being left out. Well done, sir.

I find it hard to believe any school would want out of the COC. It's the premier conference in the area and is one of the best conferences in the state for all sports. The competition makes everyone better and like several have mentioned even if some of the schools fall out they're probably going to still be on one's schedule (non football) regardless of travel distance. The schools in the COC have $$$ look at all their facilities. I really don't think travel is an issue other than its the easiest excuse to come up with.

Eagle above mentioned schools not wanting to schedule Nixa and mentioning Webb's bball schedule. I think it would be easier to schedule Nixa if your conference was weak. Why schedule a brutal non conf when your conf. will give you plenty of litmus tests (kind of the SEC football schedule mentality).

The COC doesn't matter to me because these schools are going to play either way. I looked at the CJ boys basketball schedule the year before they joined the COC. This team wasn't very good. They played every Springfield COC team except Ozark. They are going to play either way so it really doesn't matter if it is conference or non conference.

I'll ask you the same question I asked AC100...Do you really think...now slow down and think across the board here...not just pigskin...this isn't big time college athletics. Contrary to popular belief from the west COC folks, football isn't driving this train...Do you really think the Joplin 5 are any more or less competitive than the SPS 5?

I do think attendance would increase playing more local teams. More people at Nixa care about playing Glendale than Neosho or CJ. More people in CJ would care more about playing Pittsburg or Lamar than Nixa.

I would say no in boys basketball. I would say yes in other sports. The Springfield COC schools are playing Kickapoo now and they are usually the best team in most things.
So, are you saying it's a wash competitively? Or do you think the Joplin 5 offer more? I agree, some sports yes and some sports no. I just think, at the end of the day and the entire scope, there's not much difference. My Google skills are failing me today. I swear there was once a place that house the annual COC standings...an all COC thing. It pretty much read top to bottom as an east to west directory. There's an exception or two, just like there would be if you swapped out the Joplin 5 with SPS 5.

100%. I don't know how much ADs care about attendance but the games are way more fun as a spectator when you have a good crowd for BOTH teams. That's what makes HS games special vs college. In the 'old' days the only game like this for WC or Carthage FB was playing each other. From the WC/Carthage perspective I don't care if we lose the springfield 5 I just don't want to lose Joplin CJ or even Neosho as opponents. They are local games, typically good crowds, a place where you can meet up with friends and family you have in the other town when you play each other.

When I looked at it (just one year of data) it was basically that. Nixa was the leader by a mile, they were good at everything. Then the other 3 suburbs, they are good at almost everything. Joplin, WC, Carthage and Branson were hit and miss. CJ didn't have as many wins, but when you factor in their size they are doing pretty good. Neosho was really the only one that was truly noncompetitive. At least in the one year I looked at.

So you're using Final 4 appearances as a judge of competitiveness? Honest question. I'm just trying to figure out what we're looking at and why.
