BIG 8

Correct. And I honestly think it's SPS in this scenario...BUT...if what I've heard (and keep hearing, fwiw) is Rog, Bolivar, Camdenton, Lebanon, Marshfield, West Plains, and Branson are in talks to form their own conference. Idk if it'll happen, but I honestly believe there's some truth to it. If that happens, then that obviously forces SPS's hand. At that point, things would get interesting.
Do you think they would invite Rolla and Waynesville or leave them out?

Why not Rolla? Seems like they would fit into that.

That is an interesting set up. It would leave the Ozark Conference without a lot of their eastern schools and the SPS schools by themselves.

If they do this we should create a thread just to name the conference😂

Why in Gods Name would they want West Plains in that conference? Just for numbers and to gain traction??

Poor CJ and Neosho get left behind in the COC.

I’d also think that Willard would want to jump in on that?

So then we are back to the million dollar question... would their COC neighbors tell us to kick rocks and partner with SPS instead? I think they should, but whether or not they would is a different matter.

And if they left us, do we try to get Nevada and McDonald County to join? It's a step down for the bigger schools at least in football, but it's a nice win for Carl and Neosho. Or do we just stay with the 5 and leave it up to each school to figure out if they want to schedule opponents like Baxter Springs KS or Memphis Ridgeway and HarBer. Whatever suits them.

Rolla and Waynesville, as is Camdenton, are all near the Jeff City vicinity. One would think road trips there and Columbia would be almost easier than going to Springfield all the time.

I just don't see it happening. Nixa barely schedules Parkview or Hillcrest in anything now. Why would they want to be in the same league with them if they refuse to even schedule them non conference?

Also Baxter isn't someone that any of the western COC schools could schedule. They are not good and much smaller. The only schools in Kansas they could schedule is Labette County and Pittsburg.

I'm just throwing out a name, my point is schools could try to schedule the remaining opponents up or down as it suits them. I don't care about the COC in other sports but in football it's about the ideal scenario at least for Joplin WC and Carthage. I know Carl and Neosho aren't strong RIGHT NOW, but both have been in the not very distant past and at least CJ probably will be again soon. The non con games before CJ and Joplin joined really sucked for Carthage. Some of them for Webb were pretty fun. But I remember WC back in the old SW Conf days having regular season games in Kansas City, Camdenton, Lebanon, Branson. I'd take the COC every time over that.

I kind of hope the COC hangs on for a few more years. Cj has 3 strong classes in a row starting in 8th grade going down. It really only matters in football as other sports are more willing to play schools that are a lot bigger or smaller in other sports.

So what looks to be left if all the rumors are correct is the old SWC/Big 6 and Big 8. Or Big 14 except this time Joplin instead of Memorial. If CJ Doesn't Join the Big 8 all those schools will be looking for one non conference game every year.
But I don't think Nevada or Mac would join a conference again with Webb City or Carthage considering they abandoned them once for greener pastures and left them without a conference for many years.

Waynesville to Jeff City is close by crow fly miles but man it is not an easy drive. A straight shot down I-44 isn't bad.

What advantages exist for say Lebanon with this new league over the old league? Travel seems equal.

Who knows man. Great question.

When this all shakes out, I’d be willing to bet they aren’t the only west COC schools that get left out.
I’d also think that Willard would want to jump in on that?
I don’t see it. Willard does just fine overall in the COC. Their AD is as competitive of a guy as I know. I doubt he’d support anything other than some function of COC.

Maybe it’s not Nixa that doesn’t schedule them. Might seem more plausible if you approach it that way.

Not to mention dealing with JC/COMO officials and admin is, well, “interesting “ as my wife would say.

Well one doesn't schedule the other. It doesn't matter much who doesn't want to. My guess is both.

Someone told me the deadline for conference affiliation decisions is October 10th; is that true?

I think that might be more of a self imposed deadline set by some of these schools

With the Springfield metro growth, the SPS is turning into a smaller version of KC and STL Public schools. SPS has 3 schools now that I don't think any of the COC or rest of the Ozark Conference want to deal with but SPS forces and runs the league. Also for the sake of being "equal" cough cough cough - they have to keep them with Kickapoo and Glendale. We also know the favorite between those two schools as well.

When I was in school we always got hosed by Springfield area officials including big time in a sectional basketball game.
Brother, if you’re from Camdenton, and I think you are…you get hosed from every basketball official that ever walked. It’s the payback for them worshiping at the feet of anyone who walks the home sidelines at the JOD. Just the way it works.

Camdenton is close to my heart but I'm from a town north of it on the same highway.

So if the SPS schools are a package and the other OC schools leave (which I don't understand) who are the SPS schools in a conference with. The COC would still have 9 schools if only Branson leaves.

Back to how the Ozark Conference was for years sans Joplin I guess.

I think the other OC schools are bothered by SPS politics, not getting JV and JH games, and some of the other sports competition they bring. Marshfield, Rogersville, Branson fit with fine with Camdenton, Lebanon, West Plains etc.

Lol. You’re really struggling with the notion that the four remaining east COC schools would tell the west schools to kick rocks, huh? If the above happens, SPS will have no choice but to come hat in hand. Whether or not the east schools agree, that’s a different story. But I have a seriously hard time imaging the scenario not playing out somewhere close to that. All goes back to the 5 west COC schools being about a wash with the 5 SPS schools, except the 5 SPS schools would probably save the other schools hundreds of thousands of dollars annually.

1. They won't save the money because who is Nixa going to call when they need 18 non conference basketball games? They are going to call the Joplin schools.

2. I just looked at Nixa's softball schedule. Of the SPS schools they scheduled Kickapoo. That is it. They didn't even schedule Glendale. If they were worried about travel they would schedule all 5 now. They are allowed to play now.

Nixa isn't the only school involved. If Nixa chooses to, that's their choice. Just remember, because Nixa might doesn't mean Willard or REPMO or Ozark would. And I think you might be a little surprised...but then again, you don't want to admit to yourself that life in Springfield area athletics could operate just fine without the Joplin area. And, FWIW, the same could be said in reverse.

It takes two to tango. You seem to want to ignore that, as I've said it previously. Just because they're not on Nixa's schedule doesn't mean Nixa doesn't want to play them.
