My daughter's company is doing things right.
She had a baby earlier this year and they are awarding her six more weeks of paid bonding leave. What is this Europe? Bahahaha

Short of inciting nuclear war, I will take my chances with the disgusting conservatives over the DNC traitors.

How come this didn't happen under Obama?
A company is free to offer any incentives they want....and good for them.
A government should never force a company to offer ANY incentive. That should be driven by the marketplace.

This has been going on for awhile - tech, banks, and many others have been improving parental leave.

We're up to 4 weeks for dads and 10 or 12 weeks paid for moms here now.

Corporate America is moving pretty fast on this, although that means the change occurs unevenly. Lots of people working for small businesses and people in marginal jobs aren't likely to benefit from this. And it still isn't the norm - see https://www.fastcompany.com/3066856/how-paid-parental-leave-changed-in-2016

FOUR WEEKS FOR DADS?!
True story: My wife went in to labor on a Thursday. I took off Friday. Spent the day at the hospital. Friday evening, my principal calls me at home to congratulate me and to state he expected to see me at work on Monday.
Yeah, there are numerous companies that have pushed the paternity leave up to closer to the maternity leave. I believe B of A and Wells Fargo have much higher paternity leave than that here in STL (something like 12 weeks at Wells Fargo and 16 weeks at B of A comes to mind.) Ernst and Young made a big schtick about putting in 16 weeks of parental leave (whether mom or dad.)

Ours was a week for a long time. I took at least 2 weeks for all of my kids. Wife always had c sections and she needed the help.

Talked to someone at RGA here in STL who told me they announced they are going up to 2 weeks paternity leave as well.

It's been a booming trend among banks/tech/consulting type firms for the last 3-5 years.

I'm not arguing with it, just feeling like I got jipped.
My dad went back to work the afternoon I was born. This was in the early 80s. He worked for a Big 8 accounting firm at the time. Now he'd have a ton of leave.

There are jokes around the office that, if I have 13 kids a year, I never have to go back to work.

The other big trend I've seen is some flexibility in when leave can be taken. We can take our 4 weeks at any time in the first 12 months. It reflects the fact that lots of households have two working parents and flexibility can be very important - dad can take a couple weeks to help mom at first, take the third week later in the year to help out when mom gets crushed at work, and take the fourth week to stay home with the older siblings when the baby gets sick in the hospital with a respiratory infection.

Some parents even stagger it so one is out for 10-12 weeks and then the other is out for a few weeks. You can get the kid to ~6 months old before having to pay for day care, limiting their exposure to disease while their immune systems are weak.

I wanted to work and be a dad. We all got up at 1, 3 4 am to nurture our children. I wanted to do that, and I worked the next day. I suffered with lack of sleep. I would welcome that pain again in a hearty beat. That's what it means to be a father and a parent. Those that don't get that whatever. Stop whining.

You are such a bad ass. You are a mountain of a man. A mountain with a cave where you still live.

You have to forgive Duck,

He thinks we should all work 30 hrs a week with 52 weeks vacation a year, and extra time if someone says something that offends our little snowflake emotions.

He and Rosie might not survive a Trump Presidency !!!!!

Be a little more caring.

God forbid the workplace be a little more supportive of family needs.

Let's face it, the average new parent is not at their top productivity anyway. Nor are people with sick spouses, dying parents, etc. We all have to step up for each other at times. Having a formal policy that says you can go home for a month if you have a kid is fine at a decent sized firm. We're all less important than we think we are. Someone else can write that report, cover that shift in the ER, etc.

For these companies, too, it's a question of attracting talent. These are industries that generally hire a lot of 20 and 30 somethings.

I worked with some people that got jobs in Silicon Valley. One of the big “benefits” they were promised was long paternity leave and unlimited personal leave. However, you’re not expected to take either.

The cultural side of it is important, yeah. Some of these companies have to do better.

Darn Ducky the longer Mr. Trump is President the dumber his puppets get as they have learned to just call people names and ignore the facts.
