It is my belief that the disparity between the "haves" and "have nots" has grown substantially in recent years. For a number of reasons, bad teams have become REAL bad. Like, barely being able to field a team or playing players that have no business playing on a Friday night, for safety reasons. The 1's playing 8's only exacerbates their problems. Sometimes, due to defections, injuries, etc., they are barely surviving by Week 10. It is in nobody's best interest to play the vast majority of those games. Not many of those teams are harboring hope of winning state as an 8 seed. They are dreading the last week of the season, if they are even sticking around to play it. Of course, the numbers issue is bigger in smaller schools, but it's not exclusive to smaller schools.
On the other hand, it’s a good opportunity to run in your JV to give them experience for next year.

Especially if the opposing coach has a modicum of sportsmanship. Those games are over by 1st quarter-half at the least and gives him an opportunity to reward his reserves who may not see much time going forward. On the other hand, if they are going for the school record for points scored or his QB needs 700 yards to reach a milestone, etc., etc., then it gets ugly.

On a second note, I wish we wouldn't call it a forfeit if those low ranking teams decide not to play. Call it, "withdrew from competition", or "started basketball". I mean, isn't the season they have experienced already humiliating enough?

Everybody has their opinion, but the 4 team district, top 2 advance was pretty fair. The days when only 1 team advanced you always had a handful of ones where a team with 7 or 8 wins might not advance. If you aren't in the top 2 of a 4 team district, you don't have any argument about being left out.

Seems like the more time passes the more I think that was actually a pretty decent system.

In the system now, there is a winner and a loser on the field. The winner moves on. The loser is finished. Point differentials are never considered for playoff qualification like they were in the old district systems. Regardless of whether you took one team or 2 teams from the district, there were always times that point differentials or even a coin flip determined if you got into the playoffs. It should always be determined on the field.

I think there should be one change in districts going forward.

No team should be required to travel more than 250 (500 round trip) miles for a district game. Like will probably happen this year (600 miles).

That's no longer a 'district'.

Agreed

Class 1 needs 8 districts of 4 to 5 teams in them.
Class 2 through 5 needs 16 districts with 3 o 4 teams in them.
Class 6 is fine.

Keep the point standings for district seedings that's better than having coaches agenda decide. Win and go on format is great.

For Class 2 to 5
Week 10 - Districts
Week 11 - District Championships
Week 12 - Sectionals
Week 13 - Quarterfinals
Week 14 - Semifinals
Week 15 - State Championship
