I have read several stories, but none that I have seen explain the purpose of the trip. They say it is very dangerous and will cost millions in security. With active terrorist groups there, I guess it must be something very important to put the president in harms way. The unofficial reason is he hasn't been to subsaharan Africa in awhile. He's also visiting the two functioning nations which are the most affected by terrorism from militants in Somalia

China is very active there right now; there are geopolitical competitive reasons why we are a little more invested in Africa.

They don't keep him hid. But it's only been a couple of months since the man lost his second child way too early. I guess he was supposed to get out on the campaign trail the next day. He is also probably not being seen because he isn't a candidate and allowing them the air time. I am fairly certain there are 20 candidates getting a lot of air time. Not really room for the Veep. Especially when Trump is hogging the spot light.

He's a big part of their interaction with congress. He is a major player in the Obama war council. Etc.
