welcome to the land of private schools non-class1 fans

That's a great post!
I had forgotten how schools actually received their R-? titles.
I remember hearing about this years ago. Amazing that some of those schools ARE actually R-8s and R-9s. I think at one time families living close to those initial lines even had some choices. But, once the lines were drawn they've pretty much been law?... Where practical? This might happen again and, it might be a good thing. I'm sure it will have drawbacks.

We've been talking in the WEMO post about more small schools having to make the choice to go to 8 man. Here in SW MO one of those schools was Liberal. They really struggled to field a team for most of the season and then had some kids who were hurt early come back and they finished their season well. Unfortunately, numbers behind this senior class were dismal and they will go 8 man. (See that post for more discussion... lol)

Geographically? If they were ever absorbed by another district? It would make for a rough bussing day for those kids. They sit in Prarie State Park ... many, many acres of land where no student lives (bad for revenue) and it puts them a longish drive from other schools.
Hard on these small communities with a real sense of home and pride to face tough times. Hard to imagine tougher times aren't coming though.

We lived out in the country and our neighbors across the street their kids went to Mount Vernon, the house down the street from us went to Pierce City. Funny thing we were less than 4 miles from Monett schools, 10 miles from Pierce City and almost 18 miles from Mount Vernon. We could never figure out why that boundary was so off because all three buses stopped almost in front of our house to pick up kids. Well a few years later an older Gentleman stopped by and told my parents he grew up in that house. He also said his uncles had owned those other two homes. Well I guess back then a family feud broke out so the brothers all decided that none of their kids would go to school together ever again, and back then he said you could chose what school you wanted to go too. So because of a feud 70 years ago they drew some crazy school boundary and those got locked in over the years. It was just interesting to figure out why three buses from three different schools ran right by those three houses everyday.

Some school boundaries make no sense to me. I almost purchased a home several years back because it was so much cheaper than most homes we had been looking at in Monett. Well got to closing and found out it was in PC school district so we backed out. You could almost see Monett's elementary school from the front yard yet it was in PC school district which was over another 6-8 miles away. Just crazy.

Yes!
And, as kids, many of us who grew up in God's country;) had wonky zip codes vs. telephone numbers vs. school districts. Guaranteed that stories like yours played into those eventual lines!

Wow, that's crazy and interesting. I always wonder why certain streets in my area are in certain school districts. You never know.

Yeah you look at some of the school districts and think what the heck. I remember when I lived in Joplin Seneca and Neosho's buses use to almost come into town to pick up kids.

Sounds like some rural Bloods vs Crips type thuggery.

I believe you are correct sir. Joplin and Webb City really have some small school districts, Seneca too. But Neosho Carthage and Diamond have large school districts. Just crazy how the lines are drawn.
I know some people who get a good kick out the fact that on Friday nights they often cross paths going to (and sometimes from) football games. One goes to Carthage but lives quite a bit closer to Webb City. The other lives about halfway between the two towns but goes to Webb City.

There is some crazy boundary lines at the Lake of the Ozarks as well. One town has one spot in where 3 different school districts meet. 3 different school buses go by. It's crazy. But when the lines were drawn up the towns and roads were a lot different then.

It will take some kind of state mandate to ever change.

In Nodaway County in NWMO you have 7 school districts in the county. Should of been consolidated a long time ago with Maryville. Superintendent there in the 1980's tried to get it done. But residents of those small towns were fiercely against it and would rather pay higher taxes then consolidate.

I believe if you live in little Avila on Route 66 when you finish jr high you can chose from high school in Carthage, Miller , Golden City and Sarcoxie???

Yeah a lot of the residents of these rural small schools fight real hard to hold onto their schools, they believe it is their identity and that will lost if they lose the school.
But when it comes time to vote to increase taxes they will vote it down every time, the school buildings are rotting to the ground leaking all over and the teachers can barely get paid, and they have to go to just four day per week to keep the doors open. They want the school but they don't want to pay anything to keep the buildings up or keep good teachers. They are only hurting the kids.
