Week 4 or Week 5 (current week)?

dumb? because a larger class school lost to a smaller class school and dropped spots? Valle will play a larger class school. You compare apples to oranges. Polls are dumb anyway. The only thing that matters is the end of the season. Until then, 90% of these sports writers who vote, do not see many of these teams play.

I am not sure if you are arguing or agreeing but that was the point I was making.

I think we are arguing different things. I dont see a problem with Monett dropping in class 3. I do see a problem with Valle dropping though playing the best Class 2 team in the state. That would be like Monett losing to Kearney. Just my opinion.

People need to stop putting so much stock in the class a team is in and start spending more time looking at the team. The last few years have proved class designation means less and less. Despite the difference in enrollment Monett played toe to toe with a team that probably beats 80% of the teams in the entire state in all classes!

You make the assertion that classication means less and less in the last few years. What are you backing that up with?

Here's a point that class isn't that big of an indicator - the COC (Large) was won year after year by a Class 4 team, although mostly a Class 5 conference. The Big 8 was won last year by a Class 2 team despite all other members being class 3 or 4. The Class 6 schools in the OC haven't won many outright league titles in what is mostly a Class 5 conference.

By the way, I'm not sure any single game this year has been a matchup of two schools with the same enrollment. But the smaller school of the two had quite often either won or played within a couple or three touchdowns, I'd guess at least 30% to 40% of the time.

I agree with cardsbeatwriter - way too much fascination on this board with class size, especially when talking about classes next to each other. And why debate class 1 vs class 6? But absolutely Lamar when 100% healthy could compete well with a LARGE percentage of class 4 / 5 / 6 teams in this state.

So WC should have not dropped in the rankings when they lost to Carthage earlier this season? I mean they lost to a larger classification right?
And CJ should not have slipped after losing to Ozark.

so michigan should not have have dropped in the polls the year they lost to appalachian state......makes sense

so michigan should not have have dropped in the polls the year they lost to appalachian state......makes sense

Pretty sure this thread is dedicated strictly to Missouri high school rankings....
But if you wanna throw in a college game from a decade ago and compare apples to oranges and prove your ignorance then by all means..

While I think Monett is really good, a one spot drop sounds logical. I agree the quality of the team rates higher than the class they are in. If Monett had lost to Mac County (class 4) last Friday I would have expected a huge drop in the polls...even though Mac County is in a higher class. That doesn't seem debatable. So I really don't see Mizz's point. Most if not all the top 5 Class 3 schools would be considered an "underdog" this year versus Lamar.

I bet Lamar could beat NWMSU.

And I bet that any bet you make, you're going to lose cause you're obviously blowing it out of context and are unwilling to see the simple logic that has been presented before you. Jeacon. I mean Deacon, or hell, however they spell it in the rock you live under.

You are probably correct on that aside from Maryville. Polls do not matter anyway until the very end. Just give something for the parents and most everyone on here to talk about in between games.

Lamar more talented than Monett? Yes. Did Monett play them close? Absolutely. With how polls go, you cant expect to lose and stay the same spot, hence the drop in one spot. It's just how it goes. Does that drop in the poll hurt them during playoff time? No, this isn't the garbage BCS.

Miz... You are right it is just a poll and means nothing. Heck even the season ending polls are still biased opinion except for the #1 and #2 spots.
But there is precedent to leave a team after a "good loss". I don't think Nixa fell after a loss to WC last season, heck I could be wrong but I don't think Rock fell either.

No they would not. They might some of the bad ones.

I would have to agree with Mister Wizard on this one. He did not say beat most of them. He said compete well. I'm my rough definition that is play within a couple scores. He also added the caveat when 100% healthy. Even a great small school program takes a hit when 1-2 of their best players go down.

I think once you take out just a very few large elite schools i think Lamar holds up pretty well. Not year in, year out and maybe not in a schedule where they play a bunch of big schools but none of that is the point. The point of all this is that my opinion Monett's stock improves after being competitive, though it is possible Lamar didn't play their best game and was missing one of if not their best player.

There are terrible programs throughout all of the classes, and yes Lamar could probably play with some of these schools in the higher classes. Yet, there is no way they would compete with a "large percent" of the schools in class 4/5/6. Unless Jimmy Chitwood can play quarterback.

Way too much fascination with rankings. Last year, Kearney blew that flukey game to LN (+5 turnovers and #1 qb out in 1Q), and they were underrated all season. Until the end when it counted.

I guess your definition of a "large percent" is different than most fans on here. Let's do the math; there are roughly 140 teams in Class 4 through 6. I think most would agree that there is not a class 4 team Lamar would not "compete with"..that would be 64 schools in class 4. As for class 5 Lamar would probably "compete with" most but for the sake of your argument let's say the would compete with #7 (Glendale) and everyone below them. That would be roughly 37 Class 5 schools Lamar would compete with. There are 32 class 6 schools, again for the sake of your argument let's say Lamar would only compete with the bottom half (16). If you take these numbers you come up with 83%, in my world 83% is a "large percent"...just saying.

In most cases you would be right... However, in the case of Lamar, I would disagree. They would hold their own against ANYONE consistently. yes, they are that good.

Don't kid yourself. There are a lot of Class 4 schools that are not that good and after you get through the top 6-8 teams in Class 5 and 6 it is not the same.

I certainly don't think Cal Preps predictions are the end all. For one random example though.

PROJECT A MATCHUP
neutral field
[2016] Lamar (MO) 38, [2016] Battle [Muriel] (Columbia, MO) 31

Now I'm not saying Lamar would beat Battle but I think we agree Battle is in the upper half of Class 5 (They are ranked #2 after all) and this prediction doesn't just say Lamar would compete with them. It says they would win.

Also has Lamar 40 Hannibal 10. Hannibal is definitely in the upper half of Class 4. I don't know that I buy a 30 point win but regardless you have to concede they would compete well.

Nixa is ranked 5th in Class 5 right now. Lamar would at least compete with them I have no doubt. Lamar would probably compete just fine in the COC or Ozark Conference this year.

Just rewind this whole discussion back about 8 years and replace Lamar with Webb City and I read thread after thread on here on how WC would never have a team that could compete with the likes of Rockhurst. Then a few teams come along that do just that and those threads get forgotten.

Again I'm not even making the case that a Class 2 team can play big schools week in week out and hold up. Injuries and depth becomes a factor. But give Bailey a couple weeks or more to prepare for a good team and they are a handful.

I just wanna point out most of the pro lamar posts are being made by people who are not from lamar. Another "small" school we could be making these arguements for is maryville. For a single game theres not to many teams i would pick over them.

Heres how i think the top program in each class (valle, lamar, maryville,jb, and webb) would do in the higher classes.
Up one class- top 2 or 3
Up 2 classes- top 5-10
Up 3 classes- top 25-30%

Didn't LN put in their back-up QB so Kearney didn't feel so bad?

Not sure what happened in Hannibal this year but they are not doing very well..............

I don't remember their backup being responsible for four turnovers, but okay. You had to be there. I'm sure Kearney's record of 7-1 against Liberty's high schools keeps them from too bad about last year.

Nope the QB change is what fueled North's win. Once they were able to mix it up offensively even just a bit it made a difference. STILL take away K's backup being forced into action and throwing a pick six in the 4th QTR this was a very close one. Credit to North for their first win vs. K..............and it was just the medicine it turns out the Dogs needed to go to the Dome.

Top. At the beginning of the year you had LSW and/or Park Hill at the top of C6 in KC. How do you see it now. Rock and South are playing much better. BS has issues. RP shut out by Rock. LS playing very well.

Right now (this Friday will be something else) gotta say the Rock is #1. Looks like they are fashioning quite the D thus far. Stay healthy and Columbia bound they very well could be..........as for others I agree with you Blue Springs seems due for a fall. Park Hill is experiencing the C6 growing pains and I wouldn't count LSW out just yet. Lee's Summit should be in the conversation as well..........

Columbia-bound? So they should get there next season? Or did something change? I was thinking this year's state championship games are in Springfield, at MSU, right?

A down year for Class 6 in KC?

A down year for Class 6 in KC?
No that (with the glaring exception of BS South) was last year. This is a pretty up year it is just that the Suburban Gold teams are all beating up on each other thus tainting their records. Rock beating what was a very hot Ray-Pec really got my attention especially shutting them out.
