I have to give him and Fowler my apology. Both have far exceeded anything I thought they would, or could, do this season. That was quite the nice HR saving catch Fowler made to day and Waino has been VERY good!1 ER in Sept. 4 games, 27 innings, .45 ERA. Not bad for an old washed up geezer.
I'm glad with how Waino has worked out, but you have to give some credit to the boys behind him. Much of what we are perceiving as pitching by Waino and Hudson is really the incredible defense of this team. When you run Molina at C, Goldie at 1B, Wong at 2B, DeJong at SS, Edman at 3B, and Bader in CF, that is a heck of a defensive team regardless of who is in LF or RF (and I don't think Ozuna is bad.) Waino, Hudson, and Mikolas all generate a high % of groundballs, which amplifies the value of our infield even more.More Waino numbers:
After 10 starts, Adam Wainwright had a 4.82 ERA, a 5.18 FIP, and 0.2 WAR.
Since: 19 starts 110 innings 3.35 ERA 3.58 FIP 2.4 WAR (18th in MLB)
From 2007-2014 when he was among the top 10 pitchers in the game, Wainwright averaged 2.4 WAR for every 110 innings.
He truly has turned back the clock and is a big part of why the Cards are out front. Hopefully he has 5-6 more good ones left this year.
Does Wacha make the roster? That's the more interesting case.A month ago, he might not have been on the playoff roster, but now he is a huge asset. Baseball seasons are so long. He is mentally tough to keep working like he has.
I don't see how Wacha can get a start. Is he a better pen option than someone currently out there? I don't know. Those guys are such a crap shoot. You never know who is going to blow up. If you don't take him do you keep another PH or another pen guy?Does Wacha make the roster? That's the more interesting case.

I have to think he does. If you're going to carry 12 pitchers...and I'm sure they will...although it blows my mind why, but I digress...It becomes a who would you rather have...Does Wacha make the roster? That's the more interesting case.
He's been so, so good lately. His control has everything to do with it. And I hope it continues. But I still have next to no confidence in him vs. a good lineup in the playoffs. I wouldn't show up with my hard hat on if I had first row seats, but I'd have it ready. Man, I hope he proves me wrong. I love seeing an aging vet figure it out. So cool...Carp, Benes, Weavs, Suppan...I hope Waino is on the list.My brother saw Waino at a Big League Impact charity event about a month ago and Waino told them he was “this close” to really putting it together. I guess he was right. His control has been incredible lately.
That and good hitters actually dialed in every single AB might be a bad recipe. My biggest worry with Waino is colder weather. He wasn't good until it warmed up this year. Will he struggle again when it gets colder??
I wouldn't keep 12 pitchers in the playoffs. I'd rather have a spare bat/glove/pair of wheels given the # of off days.I have to think he does. If you're going to carry 12 pitchers...and I'm sure they will...although it blows my mind why, but I digress...It becomes a who would you rather have...
Wacha?
Fernandez?
Leone?
Cabrera?
Mayers?
Ponce?
I think of that group...it's Wacha. Especially as effective as he's been lately. And I can't imagine anyone being in that 12th spot that'd be anything more than an innings eater in a lopsided game.
Agreed...I'd rather have, for example, a Randy A for defense and baserunning than a toss away bullpen arm given the schedule setup. But I bet they go with 12 pitchers.I wouldn't keep 12 pitchers in the playoffs. I'd rather have a spare bat/glove/pair of wheels given the # of off days.
I would normally agree with you, but look at his last three opponents: Milwaukee, Washington, and Arizona. Milwaukee has two losses in the last 10 games, one to Waino. Waino outlasted arguably the best pitcher over the last 3 seasons in the NL and held a potent offense to one run. Arizona can hit, just are not solid as a pitching staff. I honestly don't see how you can justify not starting him in a game 2 of the divisional series, especially placing him as a veteran on the road over Hudson. Let Hudson be the game 3 starter at home. That and good hitters actually dialed in every single AB might be a bad recipe.
Waino or Hudson? I just looked at the numbers, I stand corrected and would start Waino at home.I would start him at home.

Molina, Weiters, Goldy, Wong, Dejong, Edman, Marp, Munoz, Fowler, Bader, Ozuna, O'Neill, JMart...that's your 13 position players.
Flaherty, Hudson, Mikolas, Waino, Wacha, Webb, Miller, Brebbia, Gallegos, Helsley, Gant, CMart...your 12 pitchers.
That's my best guess.
Milwaukee, Washington, and Arizona aren't exactly the Braves or Dodgers. And playoffs are a bit different. Again, I hope he proves me wrong. Heck, I've been way wrong about his season. I was ready for a mystery injury and a trip to the 60-day IL about May 1. Ride off into the sunset. But that sure hasn't been the case. He's making a case for the #5 starter next year and another incentive based contract. CMart goes back to the rotation and Gomber/Helsley are depth. He's shaky for sure in September. His decline started in July. Hopefully rest does him some good. He still gets my nod ahead of Wacha. Heck, Fernandez might be ahead of Wacha really. He at least gets to join the conversation I think.Gant has had something like one clean inning in 2 months. I wouldn’t waste a spot on him. He was fantastic in March and April. But no longer.
Looks like Wacha could be out, at least the first playoff game, or series, with the shoulder issues today. He's shaky for sure in September. His decline started in July.
