Unfair Districts

Perhaps the most unfair district I've ever seen is in softball this season. Columbia Rock Bridge and Blue Springs South are in the same district and both ranked in the top 10 nationally. Both should be playing for state hardware. Only losses were to each other. Grain Valley and Blue Springs could probably win most other districts as well. Class 5 in football in KC is another example. Grain Valley has some of the worst football teams in their district with hardly any wins. The other one has four legitimate threats to make it to the final 4. Set up districts going into week 9 or right after. Problem solved.
Always hated the way districts are set up in high school. Don't get me started on the ridiculous nature of track's district format. One off day or a couple fouls later in a field event and you are out regardless if your the best in the state and regardless of what you've done all season. Have automatic qualifying marks like an A standard for the Olympic Trials. Problem solved.
Whew, that was too much work, no wonder MSHSAA never changes!

If you are not including 8-Man District 4 as the top candidate, then you you don’t have room to complain. That district has 5 of the top 6 teams in the state.

Who cares. Can't win your district? You weren't the best team in the state. The battle for "We're #2!" can be settled through debate on message boards, but is really inconsequential.
Or the team gets banged up badly with much tougher competition and faces a fresh team come sectionals that had a cakewalk.
I don't follow 8 Man football, but here is Class 5 in Kansas City that faces each other in sectionals. Just as a reference Platte County would beat 2-6 in the other district. My point is how hard is it for MSHSAA to look at these things at the end of this week and set up districts at that time. I don't think it takes a lot of effort or time. I still don't understand why everyone makes the playoffs. Curious how many of the bottom two seeds in any district have ever advanced passed the first round.

No matter how the state does things there are going to be unfair districts in every sport, every year. It just the way things work. You can't make things perfect.

None of those teams are winning state. Next.

Who cares if they play in the districts and they are the two/three/four best teams in the state!!! A playoff system is not set up to make sure each team advances as far as their talent allows versus lesser talented teams, it's purpose is to crown a state title winner the one and only winner. If the best team eliminates the best competition in the district rounds so be it the Winner is still crowned. All the other teams matter not they are losers at the end of the day. Sure the fans of those teams will batch and moan but on the flip side teams from other districts and across the bracket will be happy because they advance further.

Geography doesn't always work well when lining up districts. Carthage could claim they've been in an unfair football district for years and years. However, they haven't complained a lot from what I've heard. I would like to think most in C-town realize that if you can't win districts, you can't win state.

And they’ve almost all played one another! Blood bath coming!
Exactly Top, which is the main reason I prefer the old 4 team district format because those were the last three games of the regular season. Now, sometimes you did have a previous opponent in the next round because of the proximate geography of the districts but on many, maybe most, occasions you did not. To those who object that you have too many district champs under that format, call them sub-districts and crown a district champ after the next round.

Carthage would've turboed its way to the title last year had they beat Webb

I think that's accurate. No one says it's unfair, just unfortunate and at times frustrating. Football is arguably Carthage's strongest sport but aside from the few years they were in different classes, it brings in few if any trophies or recognition other than a great regular season.

The thing that I've noticed having lived in both towns is that in general people in Webb City care A LOT more about football, school sports in general, it's almost part of their identity, than people in Carthage. So while I think people don't love being in a district with Webb City, football isn't a big enough deal to most people to get that worked up.

Not really, outside of normal football stuff like the best team doesn’t always win which no system can fix, the best teams typically play in the final 4 and in the championship. It’s no where as bad as any of you make it out to be lol

I see a lot of complaining on this issue. I would love to hear your opinion on why it is so bad. I don't know how a lot of other states do their playoffs, but I feel like the current system is a lot better than the old system.

No matter the system there are going to be negatives and people that do not like it. I used to live in Illinois and I am familiar with their system, but don't be fooled that because it has been around for a long time that everyone likes it and it is successful. There are many people and schools that do not like it and would want it changed.

Personally I like Missouri's current system. It is the best one they have had IMO. But again there are negatives and there will be people who do not like it.

I agree the current system has flaws but it's dang good. I really prefer the Old 4 team districts with head to head games deciding the outcome...but to many people where up in arms because of loaded districts and weak districts so it had to go.
