T-minus 2 weeks to Classification Friday

This article in the Globe suggests Webb may be more likely than in past years to move up. I'll believe it when I see it, I've heard people saying this for years but it never happens because there are too many suburban schools dramatically outpacing Webb City in growth plus at the same time smaller schools are dropping football which reduces the number of slots to fill in Class 5 catch all. So the bar keeps going up.

If that were to happen I can't really think of any other classification change that would have more ripples. CJ fans will be saying why couldn't this have happened just a few years earlier.

Webb City would have been Class 5 4-6 years ago but for the schools dropping football or going to 8-man. A decade ago there were about 50 Class 5 programs. Now it looks like it is more like 35-40.

Webb will likely jump to Class 5 in 2020. Carthage should jump to Class 6 in 2020 with the new 2:1 ratio stipulation for classifying schools. Looks like there will be a net decrease of about 5 schools give or take this year leaving 37 teams in Class 5.

Please elaborate on the new 2:1 ratio stipulation.

PROPOSAL 9 - (Sport and Activity Classification) - (PASSED) - 376 FOR, 51 AGAINST

Amends By-Law 5.1, District and State Tournament Procedures, to restructure the procedures for sport and activity classification for districts and the state series.

----------------

The largest school in a classification can be no larger than 2X the enrollment of the smallest school save for Class 1 in each given sport.

But how does that put Carthage in C6? As I understand it the 2:1 thing is a guardrail, not the assignment method. The only way I see Carthage in C6 is if they expanded it to 64 teams and even then it would be close since they are on the smaller side of C5.

I have to agree, unless Carthage is growing faster than what I realize, I don't see them going to class 6 for a long time.

Nixa should probable join Ozark in Class 6 this year and I could see Repo being next. Repo right now as a town is growing faster than either Nixa and Ozark.

How would that work if Carthage being bumped to Class 6 would make it less than half the enrollment of the largest school?

So let's just take a look. These are preliminary 2019 numbers from dese not mshsaa. It does not include any modifications like co-ops, etc.

Based on this, Carthage or Republic could be the next Class 6 coc team after Nixa and Ozark. But they still have a ways to go. Carthage has steeper total district growth over the last 10 years which I don't see changing soon. It's possible Republic could speed up if it takes off like Nixa/Ozark in the mid '00s.

Webb City has definitely closed the gap in the last 2 years so maybe they are closer than I thought.

CJ may be re-evaluating the COC if these trends continue with flat/negative district growth while everyone else (who are already quite a bit larger) is rapidly going up.

Man how did you get that. does dese have their numbers back up? Looking at that trend it pretty much backs up what I was saying about Webb they had been flat in growth for about a decade from 08 to 18 they pretty much have not grown at the high school level and the other growth looks flat. Neosho surprises me looks like they are losing kids? Yeah CJ does look to be leveling off, interesting looking at that Chart Webb was not growing while CJ was, you look now and Webb is growing and CJ has leveled off.

CJ won't leave the COC voluntarily. There is no where else to go and they think they compete in most sports just fine.

I agree the next best thing is the Big 8 and they are a good fit in the COC even if they are way smaller than everyone else. They do compete just fine but football could be problematic if trends don't reverse. It doesn't help having literally the worst luck imaginable with injuries lately.

Why won’t MR MSSHA put all the private schools together. I’m mean seriously you know that they recruit. Not just football do it in all sports.

We had our chance to do this about 10-12 year ago and voted it down. Nobody to blame but ourselves.

Actually that didn’t happen. I’ve seen that a lot on these comments on this board and others. The schools and people who voted on this were mainly private schools. Talk about conflict of interest. We haven’t had a vote in years. This wasn’t as big of a problem back when it was voted on anyhow. This mainly happened with bigger schools. We didn’t see 15-20 D1 athletes going to private class 2-3 schools. Within a few years of time. Which creates a HUGE disparity.

Of the 578 member schools, 70 of them private, only 413 voted on the proposal and it was rejected by a margin of 321-92. The proposal was initiated by Belle High School, near Jefferson City, and signed by 62 high schools statewide, including Orchard Farm and Valley Park High Schools. The original proposal was for separate state championships for all sports but MSHSAA Executive Director Dr. Kerwin Urhahn decided to exclude football from the proposal.

Exclude? I wonder why.

Again, despite all the grumbling about who, what, when, where, at least MSHSAA did have everything ready to roll on the website as far as I can tell so far. In the other thread with the assignments posted, each team's home page on MSHSAA is linked. Just click on the Sports and Activities tab, then find 11 (or 8) man football and click on that to go to their schedule. There's cross links there to every team on that schedule, and so on. #justlookingout
