How has recruiting been for them in the offseason, and what do they have coming in? I am assuming they are all returning, unless they left for IMG or some other hot location for recruited football:

Assuming St. Mary's moves up to Class 4 they are the instant favorite to win the title. Smithville-Hannibal would be my very early runners up.

I think this is like the conversation about any of the top teams coming back, you have to look also at who they lost. In the case of St. Mary's they lose five all state players, including their QB, as well as the offensive and defensive players of the year. How well has their new recruiting gone? Unless they have some new Junior Tony Van Zandts coming up, it is just wait and see in Class 4. Do they have a line that can handle some of the bigger C4 schools? They haven't in the past when they were in C4 before.

In the case of Smithville, they have their QB coming back, but have lost 95% of the receiver yards in three players, and seven players overall that were three-year starters--and very accomplished players like Simoncic and Mason Crim. They have had a signficant loss of talent. Not to say they won't be really good, from 2018 to 2021, the team has been solid - with two to three losses a year. But this is no Webb we are talking about.

With St. Mary's, the schedule will tell you in a few games. They start off with SLU..and the Neuqua Valley game in Naperville, IL. If they can handle those games, then they should be okay.

The latter includes two pretty down years 2011-12, too. As stated before I am more looking for IMPROVEMENT in discipline, participation and attitude this year. Anything else is pure gravy again especially given those first three contests. I could easily see them start 0-3 then run back to the District final at a minimum. This is also why I want to see the new district assignments.
