I am torn on open enrollment. There is about 80 acres of land I would love to purchase and build a house on. The issue is it is in Verona's school district the land next to it is in Monett's but it is not for sale and if it was it would go for about $2,000 more an acre because it is in Monett's school district. So this means I have to pony up over $10,000 a month for my kids to go to Monett schools or just let them go to Verona which offers nothing. Be nice if I could just say hey I want to move my tax dollars over to Monett and let my kids go there. I just don't know, but small public schools like Verona don't offer and can't offer enough for kids.
I hear you. In STL, families that can afford to, move to affluent suburbs with higher property values and high tax bases. I understand why they do it. I chose to live in the city, but sent one of my kids to a private high school (and the other to the highest performing public high school in Missouri ... which happens to be a STL City school).
What I’D love to see is EVERY kid in Missouri get the type of funding more affluent suburban schools get. I want ALL of them to benefit, regardless of whether they’re in Ladue or Hayti. Open enrollment wouldn’t mean every kid could go to any high school they want to go to IF their families couldn’t provide transportation beyond a certain number of miles each district would give (which is what they do in Arizona).
Opening enrollment is highly unlikely to happen because “the haves” aren’t going to share money for schools with “the have nots”. In that respect, kids in small towns have much in common with kids in St. Louis City and other smaller suburbs here.
I’m totally down with splitting publics and privates for post season play. There’ll be fewer rounds and we could even have some of the public champions play the private champions at the end of the season.
