SEMO HSFB Dead?

Kennett lost in the state championship to Odessa 3 or 4 years ago. They are down this year, but they can compete statewide most years.
That was in the state semifinal. And it wasn't close. Odessa played Center, Savannah, and Cassville in the postseason also. All better than Kennett.

yes, you're right it was a semi-final, but Center Savannah and Cassville were not obviously better than Kennett that year. I would take any of them over Kennett this year.

Malden and Hayti have been mentioned but both teams shut down their teams before the end of the season, Caruthersville has a lot of talent but have had trouble keeping a coach.

It has definitely declined down there. There are not a lot of turf fields or newer facilities down there, I doubt many teams have strong year-round weightlifting programs.

I watched the NMCC vs Portageville game, and I don't think either team can compete with the top teams in their respective classes.

Park Hills Central and Valle Catholic are really good this year but are both in district 1 and the winner will be playing Cardinal Ritter in the next round.

IMO the winner of CR vs Valle\Park Hills will win class 3.

They will compete in basketball because they play consistently tough defense down there.
Wait Malden shut down their program? That’s sad.

Yes. They were. And yes, I would take any of them over Kennett every year.

I would have never considered them SEMO. But then again any time I'm thinking SEMO I'm usually just thinking bootheel.

FWIW If Portageville had a Qb who could move the ball around well they could also ‘make some noise’. They have a very good class 1 RB and two pretty athletic 6’+ WRs, decent OL. Not sure how they are on defense either.. but just seeing some clips they looked like they had some nice pieces

They are talented but inconsistent. There is a large gap between playing their best and playing their worst. Too many drive-killing mistakes, penalties, dropped passes, etc. and missed assignments on defense. They have also had some injuries, which could keep the game with Charleston tomorrow night interesting.

SEMO isn't going down any time soon.

In the Mineral Area, Jackson will be stout as long as Eckley is there. Farmington has had some great teams. Park Hills Central is consistently forgotten about, but will always be contenders for Class 3. It would be absolutely foolish to ever write off Valle Catholic.

The bootheel is admittedly down this year. People forget how tough it is to win in the Boot. My family is from Pemiscot County, and people down there are a different kind of tough! We're talking schools with 99% Free/Reduced lunch (something you rarely see in rural schools). Point being, it's very tough to sustain success with tough socioeconomics and a declining population. When my mom when to Caruthersville, there was consistently 400-500 kids in the HS. Now it's class 1. I root for all of the bootheel teams as a Mid-MO guy! They have some athleticism, there's just so many roadblocks in the area.

I was always curious how they would do in a bigger class. I will say I was very WRONG about them. Happy for them but always curious if St. Gen would be a powerhouse if Valle wasn't there. Obviously we will never know and I have a soft spot for public schools but such is the world we live in.
I sometimes wonder the same thing about Pittsburg KS and Colgan. SMC seems to scoop up a lot of the talent and runs over loads of small schools however PHS still seems to be pretty competitive many years. Just wonder what they would be if there wasn’t a catholic school with a heavy emphasis on athletics in town.
