I venture through that area a lot all year long. Last week while in Piedmont they seem to be operating as normal. Even saw five-six kids playing catch on Clearwaters baseball field.
And I sorta understand it. They’ve been pretty well sheltered from all of this in those areas. Not saying something won’t progress the spread to those areas, but it’s not like they’re a major attraction or job producing areas where you have a ton of outsiders going through.

I like the idea of letting each district control its own operations internally. Obviously Doniphan May be preparing for nothing, but I am ok with them making that decision on their own.

What sort of competition is beginning June 6th? Is this something internal or are they anticipating some sort of statewide activity beginning?

(In my best old man “hey you whippersnappers stay off my lawn” voice)....remember when summer workouts consisted of mainly picking up and stacking hay bales and push mowing a handful of yards in your neighborhood? 3 days a week of weights for an hour, 2 weeks of camp, and then the dreaded week and a half or so of true two a days? AM for 2 1/2 hrs, PM for 2 hrs, all in full pads on a patchy, rock hard weedy field with yard lines burned into it w diesel fuel? Those were the days! How did we survive w/o a heat index or wet bulb reading coming into a factor.......

Uhh.......we were acclimated and hardened?
In my old man voice:
And, by the way, the push mower I started with was the old reel type (no motor). Don't know how I didn't suffer multiple hernias with that handle in my stomach.
No weights at my school (the farmer dads wouldn't release us and the only weights at our school anyway were various sized cans filled with concrete poured around a steel bar) and we hauled hay from the time the dew went off in the morning until late at night. Two a days? No way. Stopped haying at 6:00 headed to school where we showered before practice. Two hours of practice, 1 quart of milk, 1 quart of cherry limeade, two chili dogs and an order of fries later it was back to the hay field to put up any remaining hay (take no chances of rain on the hay overnight) and do it all over again the next day.
And yes, my friend, those were the days!

And a lot of us played both sides of the ball and didn’t need a break, nor an officials time out half way thru each quarter.

After morning practice we drove our mopeds 5 miles out of town and swam in a pit. Then headed home to do whatever, mow, bale hay, walk beans, and I lived in town.

You are better off for the experience. Not typical of the "townies" in my area. They hung around the girls at the pools, country club and public. The only thing I envied was their full body tans. I was severely two toned, dark and darker from waist up and pasty white from the waist down, but you couldn't buck hay bales in short pants.

This is exactly how I grew up except our 2-a-days were 8am-12 noon and 6-8 pm for 2 weeks (Mon-Fri) and a scrimmage Saturday morning. Your description of the practice field sounds familiar!

The invention of the round bailer and now large square bailer have hurt the youth of many small towns.

Worked construction(gopher) for two summers in high school. My mom signed me up for that job. The owner came into the high school while my mom was the secretary and asked her if she could help find a laborer. She said she already found one. Lucky me.

Would go to work at 6:30, weights at 9, back to work until 3. Then for about three weeks I would go to my neighbors to throw hay until dark.

Really really looked forward to the weekends!

It’s impossible to find anyone within 30 miles of me who still square bales. If their equipment breaks down they just junk it.
We have been buying square bales from a guy in Illinois for 5 years now. He decided to sell his farm, so we just sold our horses.

That was good old character development at its best.
After I left for college my dad and younger brothers went to large round bales. I ask them why they waited until I left to do that. Their reply, "We can't find any kids willing to buck hay at any price." My translation, "You were the last stupid one around here so when you left small squares faded into history in our operation."

Kids today working with hay would be like....

A few still do around here just for the horse crowd. My neighbor I bailed for was a big horse guy so that was the reason behind the square bales. I don't remember how many acres we tossed but one of the farms was a 100 acre field that was owned by one of the Oberle's(yes meat market)......Always had smoked ribs and soda for dinner.......It sucked stacking in those lofts on a hot day. I couldn't breath or see for a few days afterward. But the money paid for a few Friday nights.

Would also like to note that most of my teammates did this aswell. Our all-state right guard worked at a saw mill. Our left guard did construction and our left tackle worked a farm from before sun up to after sun down. He actually got a disease that summer that put him in the hospital(from the hogs?) where starting first day of camp he 160lbs.....

What was his weight before the hospitalization?
