I think you better check the track results.

What about St. Mary's? They are staying open as a non-Archdiocese catholic high school thanks to some big donor money. They are adding Southside to their name.

QUESTIONS:
1) Since they are changing their name...will they be hit with a bump up to class 4 because of the success-factor? Or are they considerd a "new" high school?
2) Since their HC is leaving to go to Bellville Illinois...will the football talent stick around?

ST. LOUIS — St. Mary’s High School has agreed to the terms of a three-year lease with the Archdiocese of St. Louis, which had planned to close the Catholic boys’ school next year.

A press conference is set for Thursday at St. Mary’s to announce the deal, which includes a new name (St. Mary's Southside) and religious sponsor for the school in the Dutchtown neighborhood.

Veteran Coach Brian Simmons will take over as Head Coach. The 55-year-old is simply anxious to return the area football scene after a five-year stint as defensive backs coach at Benedictine College at Atchison, Kansas.

Simmons had been coaching for more than 30 years. He had successful stints at Cardinal Ritter, Hazelwood East and Lutheran North, compiling a 73-39 mark over nine seasons with a three tradition-rich schools.

He helped Cardinal Ritter finish second at state in 2008. His teams posted winning records in eight of those nine seasons and reach the semifinal round three times.

Simmons is taking over for Ken Turner, who guided the Dragons to back-to-back state championships the past two seasons.

Also...what will happen to the football talent at St. Charles Lutheran now their HC is moving on? Their AD, Melvin Bethany is listed as the "interim" Head Coach

BIG QUESTIONS remain for these two powerhouse smaller private schools...which will have a huge effect on playoff races in the St. Louis area.

Anybody with any insight pertaining to football futures for these two schools?

I could be mistaken, but I thought I saw a story where MSHSAA had said that the success factor would remain, even with the new name

Also why would Grandview be ranked? They were blown out in their 1st round district game last year

It would be great if MSHSAA to let us know for sure on classifications sometime before the season actually starts but we know that’s not going to happen.
Are there any other states that wait until after practice has started to classify?

Technically, Illinois doesn't have classes until the playoffs start. The 256 (I think that's the number) teams that qualify are then divided up into classes. 32 biggest are 8A, next 32 are 7A, and so on down the line. That being said, by far the majority of teams know by previous enrollment cutoffs where they will be if they do qualify.

It is weird how different some states are in doing things. Here in Iowa, we already know what districts and classes teams are in for the next two years.

What does track times have to do anything?

I'd like to see Webb and Carthage up there but honestly I don't see either of them as a top contender. WC has a new unproven coach although I think that's less of a factor than some people want it to be. I think they will imrove over last year but I don't see them as a top 5. They probably get by Carthage this year but I think Joplin will beat them yet again.

Carthage will be close to a total rebuild from what I understand. I do think they will be good, just not like the last 2 years good.

Not sure what Republic has coming back but assuming they don't have a big rebuild I'd give them a decent shot to win that district.

In my mind Joplin is the COC team to beat this coming season. After that Nixa, Carthage, WC, and Republic should all be pretty good too but it's difficult for me to guess in what order they land.

I see plenty of people saying Carthage and Webb won't be that great or shouldn't be ranked as high as they are. I'm here to tell you that Class 5 is totally wide open with the likes of Eureka, Francis Howell, and Oak Park moving up to Class 6 with the new classification system in place adding 10 schools to Class 6.

Essentially that would mean Summit, who were in Class 4 last year would be #1. Return a lot from a 10-win team, but are they ready to dominate?

Lafayette brings most of their offense back, but loses a ton on defense. That much better than Carthage and Webb City?

Cape Central returns 14 starters, but are they a top three team in Class 5?

MICDS probably takes a step back from last year losing two of the best athletes to ever come through the school plus some quality role players. Coach Bouchard will have them ready, but are they a team who can easily beat the COC schools ranked ahead of them on the list?

Holt's got a nice program and could be pretty solid this season, but they do lose plenty of key starters.

Ladue has proven time and time again whenever they return at least half of their starters they will compete at a high level, however they do have some line issues to address and have to improve in other areas to be a solidified top 10 team.

Republic and NKC are wild cards.

There's no team on this list or anywhere I can see that will dominate in Class 5.

Lutheran lost some pretty good cogs and also their best returning player who is Harris' son. Also may have lost their returning QB whose father took a job at another local private school, but I'm just speculating. I think they take a step back IMO.

St. Mary's loses a lot of starters but should probably enough talent to compete. I've heard rumors of players transferring, but not totally buying them yet. They had three very good classes come through for them and they probably would've been less talented anyway if Coach Turner stayed on, but the future of their school turned off a lot of coaches in the hiring process. We shall see.

How much did Republic lose?
Looks like the majority of their starters, but they return a decent amount of key players: Dual-threat quarterback Wyatt Woods, full-back Kannon Krol (all-COC as a sophomore), tight end and leading receiver James Rexroat, both offensive tackles, and leading tackler Kendall Curbow at linebacker.

Extremely difficult to say who will be in what class come August but, in this region (KC-NWMO), I do think LSN stands a real good chance of being preseason #1 in this metro but would bump Rock up and perhaps take LN down a bit even assuming #9 returns.

Class 5 in this area will suffer if Oak Park moves up as you have listed. I would advise not leaving Grain Valley out if they remain in this class and Fort, like Smithville, will be far more formidable come district time and could make noise.

Class 4 the ole alma mater will definitely get lots of deserved attention it is a matter of being able to beat Smithville when all is on the line. They and EB may well be the best small-mid enrollment programs in this entire region (not listed here but even if they were to move to C2 East Buch is a 3 peat favorite in my book).

Forgot one, sorry: Blue Springs South. I'd have them at least second 5 in C6.

I'd probalby have to go with Grain Valley out of the gate in C5 in KC. Even they lose some key players but I don't think as much as Fort.... who has some nice young talent but total unknowns returning at QB and WR. I'd never discount NKC but they just seem to never be able to find a difference maker at qb.

Carthage's senior class is the least talented class to come through in probably 25 years. About 90% of Carthage's success the last 2 years has been due to Luke Gall...and he's gone so they'll be just about average.

I've heard Sal Calderella has transferred to Grain Valley after being QB at Blue Springs the past two years. I believe they have obtained a few other playmakers as well. They should be in the top 5 in C5.

NKC has made a living on underachieving with some top notch talent. I’ll discount them come playoff time every single time.

RayPec has a division 1 TE and a Division 1 RB... now do they have the pieces to fill in around them? Heard Andrew Sprague was transferring down there.
