Mourning in America

Yep, and other than your wedding party, I bet 90% were out of towners. I may go to the brewery soon, it's never crowded, and I can go outside to have a beer. It's not hard to go somewhere like a winery and maintain some social distancing. 100 people at Crowne winery is not a huge crowd and plenty of room to spread out. It's all about common sense.

Exactly.

But that is ON YOU, if you're high risk, take responsibility for yourself, exercise some common sense and do what you can to avoid exposure.

Telling yourself what to do to keep you safe is personal responsibility.

Telling everyone else what to do to keep you safe is fascism.

But he'd rather people stop their entire lives to save him. That's the height of narcissism and egotism.

No one has stopped living. I played golf last week and will play again this week. Go fishing, go to the store, get carryout at restaurants, have an occasional beer with friends I know are at least practicing social distancing - we just move our chairs a couple extra feet apart. It's not that big of a deal to me. My life hasn't changed that much, I'm not much into big social gathering anymore.

I said usually

If someone without a college degree says there are a lot of educated idiots and that statement is arguably true, what difference does it make that the person saying it doesn't have a degree?

I'm willing to guarantee the electrician, plumber, or carpenter making $30 an hour without $100,000 in student loan debt aren't saying it because they're "jealous".

False. There was maybe 10 people out of the 100 that were not there for the party. And no one had a mask. Everyone shared buckets of beer. There was a buffet of food.

Ok, so YOU are the reason you're less protected then. Stop trying to pass the buck.

I knew you were looking to spin my words for a "gotcha". I guarantee you my social contacts are as few as anybody, as are my family and friends. And don't give a rat's behind about your opinion.

I wasn't trying to "spin" anything.

I was just asking you a question to better understand your position. I want to know why you think it's everyone else's job to keep you safe?

But sincerely I do hope you're doing well and staying safe...you know, unlike your big brother Duck who is on the record stating he thinks it's funny when Trump voters die of covid.

Interesting take, considering that in this thread there is a challenge to compare benefits packages. That's not insecure.

This quote usually comes from someone who hasn't been to college. It is a shame they have to tear people down to make themselves feel adequate.
You are correct went to a trade school and not putting anyone down.Just making a comment that just because you went to college doesn't make you smarter than someone who didn't

I don't disagree. I personally know what I'm about and what I'm worth. I personally don't need to "prove" anything to anyone on Mosports. If someone else gets frustrated with another poster and decides to "compare packages" that's their prerogative.

I just find it funny that all these "educated" educators will top out at around 60k per year with loads of student loan debt, but they want to act like they're the "smart" ones because they have a piece of paper that cost them $30 to $250k.

Meanwhile an 18 year old fresh out of high school or a 20 year old out of trade school can make $50, $60k starting out with little to no debt.

Which one is "smarter"? I know a LOT of objectively dumb teachers btw.

There are some people who don’t necessarily equate success or smarts with salary. Money comes in handy if you take care of it. But there are some very happy people who never made over $60,000 a year. But carry on.

No teacher goes into the profession for money.

hb - you are correct. One mistake we are making in education is not promoting trades more than we do. We get kids on the college track at an early age than will never go to college.

I've talked to many kids about becoming an electrician, plumber, welder, mechanics, etc., but most are delusional, and think college will be as easy as high school, they can skate through will little work and make Cs, and land an office job designing video games. I'm all for more education in the trades. As I'm sure you know, the number 1 complaint of employers is that most kids from the entitled generation don't know what work is and don't want to do real work.

That's true, but I'm not talking about happiness, I'm talking about intelligence.

I never said or even implied you, or any other educator, wasn't happy making less than $60k a year.

Going to college doesn't make you smart.

Again, I know a LOT of people who are now in incredible debt because they will never be able to pay off. That's not "smart" in my opinion.

Who are you talking to?

1. Are there objectively dumb college graduates? Yes or no?

2. How do you define "educated"?

3. At what point does someone get to call themselves "smart"?

4. What is "intelligence"?

5. Does going to college make the average person "smarter", "better", or "more qualified" as a human being?

Agree on the debt thing.
I taught at SG. They have a unique
salary schedule that pays by credit hour.
And I probably had more than anyone in the history of that school so I made well over
that figure.

There are different types of intelligence. I would have been a horrible carpenter, mechanic, engineer, or graphic designer.

But I was damn good at designing programs and writing code to solve business problems,
doing statistical analysis to streamline processes, and organizing work to be more efficient and effective.

My dad didn’t attend school past 8th grade and he could figure out solutions and intrinsically explain things I could never understand. He was a mechanic, carpenter, electrician, gardener, ........................

Um...no. The average age of people who die from WuFlu is 80.5. Life expectancy in the US is only 78.9.

Again, the people who are dying have already exceeded the average life expectancy for and overwhelmingly had other health issues.

VERY few of these people had 10 extra years in them.
Good lord, that's not how you determine life expectancy of an 81 year old.

Not to go too far down the rabbit hole but educators aren't topping out at 60k in STL, and any of them with half a brain aren't spending 250k to get a bachelor's in education.

Exactly.

So you do understand why when people on the left play the "well the right wing is uneducated" card it tends to rub people the wrong way.

Uneducated doesn't necessarily mean dumb, in the same way "educated" sure doesn't always mean intelligent.

More and more colleges are doing a poor job of "educating" the kids who are paying more than enough for a diminishing product.

Average in Missouri is around $60k. There are a LOT of rural schools that top out way lower than suburban St. Louis schools.

You're right anyone with half a brain doesn't have $250k in debt, but there are educators carrying over $100k easily.

Average <> topping out. You've moved the goal posts

Average <> topping out. You've moved the goal posts

Sorry, it was implied, didn't realize I should have been preparing a thesis statement.

If the goalpost was moved it was unintended as I made the assumption (my bad) that I wasn't going to go school by school and present all their top salaries...you know, when averages work just fine.

But please, continue to strawman away with little jabs that appear to be on topic, but actually don't add anything to the overall point. I'll ask you the same questions I asked @kaskaskiakid to try to get you back on track.

I will only answer number five. “The average person” yes. It does make you smarter, better and can make you more qualified for many positions.

If your brain is actively learning new things and being challenged then yepper.

Why only 5? You know everything, surely you can answer them all.

you were asking NM and I’m getting bored.

Let’s talk about getting high speed internet to every kid in Missouri!!!

Then use one of your 46 handles and make a new thread about it.

Let me guess you think high speed internet is a human right...

1. Of course, but that's not a terribly insightful point

2. Someone who graduated from college or better.

3. Smart is not based on educated. Smart relates to innate ability.

4. A mental skillset that allows once to excel at cognitive items, such as math, understanding people, or whatever else you're measuring

5. Backwards. People who are smarter are more likely to go to college/obtain additional education. But they also benefit when given more time to obtain knowledge and critical thinking skills.

More qualified seems like a question related to expertise. Education and experience drive qualifications. But it depends upon what you're talking about. I'm very qualified to talk about mortality, employee benefits plans, etc. I'm not terribly qualified to talk about sewage systems.

Regarding answer #2: So high schools don't produce a broadly educated populace? What is their function then?

Dude, I'm not being your puppy in your dog and pony show so you can spin what I say and you play gotcha.

Then don't make comments if you're not willing/able to defend them. That's what this is, a discussion/debate board, if you're unwilling or unable to defend your nonsense then go away.

Or you can be a grown up and answer simple questions when you get called out for popping off.

There is no "gotcha". Sorry you're too intellectually dishonest/cowardly to back up the stuff you post.

I'm just not interested in your opinion and not wasting my time playing your game. Your above comments show you are incapable of having an adult conversation.

I've been having an adult conversation with you.

You're not interested in anyone's opinion unless it mirrors your own.

I'm trying to understand you and you can't answer simple questions to qualify your previous comments.

Again, this is a discussion/debate board, if you're only interested in living in an echo chamber and agreeing with Duck and Veer2 that's fine, but don't be surprised when people ask you to qualify your "opinions". If you don't want any pushback you may want to just turn on CNN and enjoy your confirmation bias.

I wouldn't want to examine my opinions either of they were as superficial as yours.
