Mo on Grichuk

Oh lord I'd make it in a heartbeat given our roster. Adding a 9 WAR CF for that? Sign the dotted line right now.

Cards would be better off doing that, giving Moss a qualifying offer to be 1B, and signing a good defensive middle infielder to fill in the gap than whatever they are going to do.

I think you vastly overestimate the value those players would add to our ballclub over the next 5 years. They probably won't be worth even 9 WAR next year. Plus pitchers get hurt more than position players - young pitchers like Reyes have a lot more injury risk than a guy like Trout.

This is why that trade would never happen - it's nowhere near enough.
I agree Neuty I would consider adding another player to get Simmons their light hitting good fielding SS, but the price would be very steep. I think Reyes would be a good place to start. He is probably our most wanted piece and could probably get a conversation started with most every GM in the majors.

To start???? The vast majority of GMs in baseball would trade Simmons straight up for Reyes. Simmons is a 3 WAR player who has a 4 year, $47 M contract left (FWIW, a very good contract overall on a team full of awful contracts.) The counter is that Reyes is yours for the next three seasons for ~$500k per year plus three years of arbitration after that, and he's already shown himself to be a decent ML starter with potential to be a front of the rotation ace.

Given that Reyes gives you $40 M+ of savings over the next four years to invest in other guys plus you own him for two years after that at depressed salaries...trading him for Simmons straight up would be a terrible move.

The economics of baseball make these young guys so valuable. Trading a top prospect for an above average position player, even one with a halfway decent contract, is generally a suboptimal roster construction move for a team like the Cardinals that doesn't have an overwhelming amount of prospects.

I think you underestimate just how valuable Reyes is. He was #2 in the midseason prospect ratings of Baseball America. He was #10 preseason at baseball prospectus and in the top 10-15 in a host of other places. He's an amazing prospect who now has a couple months of good MLB experience under his belt. He doesn't have major injury worries. He would probably be top 50 in terms of trade value in all of baseball.

A very good example of how much less valuable Simmons is: look what the Angels traded to acquire him.

One of the underrated things that the Cards need for 2017 is health, especially on the pitching side of things. Lance Lynn is almost certainly better than any SP we could bring in.

If you sit down and look at the pitching staff...the Cards are close there to what they need there to compete. Just have to try to find someone to shore up the defense, especially in CF.
