As a member of the sports media, it was nice to have all the games at one location over a two-day period in a climate controlled atmosphere. I remember most of the teams and games I got to cover from Aurora in 1999, Webb City and Lockwood in 2001 with Anvil Welch, Marionville in 2003.
Then the Missouri Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association would meet on Sunday morning to select the all-state teams. So many stories and memories.
It worked so well logistically, it was so much better than covering state championships in Kansas where the championship games were scattered over four or five college locations all over the state.
In 2000, Southeast Kansas had five teams make it to state championship games in five of the seven classes — Pittsburg in Class 5, Fort Scott 4, Frontenac Class 3, St. Mary’s-Colgan Class 2-1 and St. Paul in 8-man Division I.
Got shipped out to Hays, Kansas to cover Frontenac and Colgan as it was the only site hosting two games. At least the weather wasn’t horrible.
That’s when I realized how good Missouri had it.
