Got to see a few of these teams over the weekend in Cape.

**** Class 1

Considering you have a defending state champ with all their players back, you would think this would be cut and dry. Not the case. Valle drops a early season game to Festus which raises a few eyebrows.

Saw Eminence and Lesterville squared off this past weekend and they looked very good and there are several others in this class that could end someone's season come October if they are not on. This class is wide open. Eminence looked pretty good coming back to beat Poplar Bluff (much improved over the last few years), and then Lesterville in 2 straight.

**** Class 2

#1 Scott City - I can understand how Scott City got upset last year in districts. First they are very good. Block about as good as any team out there. Make it look pretty easy at times. BUT, I have never seen a front line as highly rated as theirs tip as much as they do. Hitting less than impressive from what you would expect. You sit there and just wait to see someone reach back and take someone's head off, and it just never happens. With that said this team beat everyone they could at the SEMO Spike tournament. They are very good, they just leave you wanting more. They can be had by a team that works hard and catches them on an off night.

Pre Season #1 St. Pius Festus has dropped quite a few games early on. Split with Perryville, and St. Vincent Perryville. Lost to Valle early, but beat Lutheran South.

**** Class 3

Perryville wins the ND Tournament taking out Cape ND and Ste Gen along the way. Also win over Farmington. Loses to Scott City and splits with St. Pius X.

Windsor Imperial plays pretty good defense, and have a huge freshman hitter who has helped elevate this team. They are not the #3 team in the state in Class 3 - no way. Not even sure they are top 10, but everyone gets excited when you have a 'name' player on your team. I may get excited like everyone else if they can advance past the semi's of districts one time. They did capture the title at North County, beating North County and Pacific in the last 2 rounds.

Cape ND looked pretty good at SEMO Spike tournament. They have loses to Perryville, Ste Gen, and Scott City (twice). Wins over Farmington and Ste Gen.

DeSoto and Ste Gen lost a lot to graduation but have the talent to make a run. Especially SG. They played this week with SG taking the match in 2 straight. SG also got revenge on Cape ND with a win this week against the bulldogs.

North County Desloge is getting votes, probably due to their win over overhyped Windsor. They did beat an unproven DeSoto in a 3 game match, but lost to a very average Jefferson. Took 4th in their own tournament. DeSoto (3rd NC) and Windsor (1st NC) avenged their loses to NC over the weekend.

I'd say the Class 1 favorites right now are Lesterville, Winona, Eminence and Valle Catholic, in that order. After Lesterville's impressive showing today at the Perryville Tournament in which they knocked off two state-ranked teams in higher classes, I'd say they are the team to watch in Class 1. I, too, saw them play Eminence in the SEMO Classics. Eminence is a very solid and very well coached and conditioned team. Lesterville has their star player in Taylor Cook who seems to dominate every time she plays. Haven't seen Winona play but if they beat Eminence in two..? Anyone have any insight into Winona or see that game? I'm curious to know what is up with Valle Catholic. I thought they'd be a shoo in this season having only lost three seniors. Any Lady Warriors fans out there who can attest or refute to this?

So these four teams are from Districts 4 and 5, which means they won't meet each other in Sectionals. What teams could pose problems for Lesterville/VC and Eminence/Winona? Let's analyze the districts.

District 1: Pretty weak district based in the Bootheel. South Pemiscot County (Steele) won this district last season but lost their star player Shelby Booker. I don't see any teams from this district posing a threat.

District 2: Stoddard County based and has been won by Bell City for the past eight seasons, but Bell City has a new coach this season and although they return their standout player Jasmine Johnson, I think Bernie can take them this season. Bernie is currently ranked No. 9 in the state poll. Bernie almost knocked off Class 3 Notre Dame in the first round of the Gold Bracket of the SEMO Classics but fell in the consolation match to Class 2 St. Vincent. Bernie is tough and could give Lesterville/VC a good run.

District 3: Bollinger County based. Leopold has won this district for the past nine years in a row. Leopold, currently ranked 10th on the state roster, was trounced earlier this season by Advance in the Woodland Tournament in two sets but since then has triumphed over the Lady Hornets twice (both times in three sets). Leopold lost its two big middles last season but has a dynamite freshman named Caitlin Perry who is quite a spectacle to watch. Advance returns a talented junior class this season and has the physical talent to avenge losses to Leopold but lacks the mentality needed to win against a tough team like Leopold. Leopold lost to Perryville in the first round of the Gold Bracket of the SEMO Classics, and Lesterville has a win over Perryville.
