KY3 is reporting Bobby Petrino is new Bears coach

Final nail in the coffin? Why does everyone always say this, the program isn't going to be cut and I'm not sure it's ever truly been on the chopping block. Ever since SMS became Missouri State they've been on a mission to up their profile and a football program is a big part of that, win or lose.

Why would they kill a program 5 years after overhauling the stadium? You think folks involved with the school would rather pull the plug on the program and have a 17,000 seat stadium at the heart of campus and a two story admin building just sit vacant than attempt to revamp the program?

Not for nothing but if Mo State was in ANY other FCS conference they probably have several winning seasons in the past decade.

You ever been to Cessna Stadium on the Wichita state campus? That Stadium is pretty nice it was really nice in 1986 but that didn't stop the Wichita from pulling the plug on their football program in 1986 because it was a financial strain on the University.

I am not saying State would do that, but Springfield is not a football town, try as the might the town just does not support football, you can look towards their public schools and see that. Right after Stec was let go, I was surprised by all the chatter on facebook by those in Springfield that wanted to kill the program so that money could be moved to the other sports.

But that all being said I hope the program rises up. I would love watch a good program locally.

I've heard, and correct me if I'm wrong, that Missouri State's long term goal is to get into the Sun Belt or Conference USA?

I understand your points there, but have we seen anything that details how much of a financial strain football even is? Doesn't seem to me like the athletics department is in dire straights, given that all sports as of 2014 had their own dedicated complexes. Also funds from FBS money games subsidize a large portion of the smaller programs budgets.

Finally, and this is nothing against you Bullit, I couldn't care less what folks around Springfield think. Many of them didn't go to Mo State and the more and more the school tries to move away from being just a regional directional school the less and less we should care about what John the Tee-Totaler Baptist Car Lot Owner thinks about Missouri State football. Obviously the big money is behind the program given the nature of Stec's buyout and the $1.25 million contract Petrino got.

And I've said it before in other MSU football threads but the Bears continue to rank near the top of the league in average attendance for Football.

Yes, obviously it's a stretch goal but that's where the programs eye's are.

Trust me and it is nothing personal against you either or MSU, I want them to win, but being from SWmo I hear a lot of chatter about SMS/ MSU and not just from those in Springfield. The Bears just don't get the support and some of that is well is their own doing, they have shot themselves in the foot many times. I don't know of many local high school coaches that will tell their players they need to go play for the bears, in fact I have heard just the opposite, I think MOSO at this point would be better.

I still remember when they hired Del Miller, they had a chance to hire Chuck Broyles from Pitt State that same year. And I remember many thought he was a shoe in for the job it was all over the papers and even the local news was a buzz with him applying. Everybody was excited that he was willing to leave Pitt for SMS at that time, after all it probable was a step down for him even though SMS was a bigger school. But instead SMS went with Del Miller, just because he promised to throw the football at least 40 times a game. He was going to install the air raid offense.

That year SMS would open against Pitt so I along with about 20 of my buddies purchased tickets. It was the largest crowd ever for the longest time in SMS history. But most were not coming to watch the Bears win, many like us wanted to watch the Bears fall on their face to little old Pitt and their boring Veer offense and the coach who ran it, because SMS thought they were too good for that. And yes SMS lost, not by much but the bigger and stronger bears were no match that night for Pitt and we all laughed but were a little sad because SMS could have had Broyles but they went with Del and we all know how well that worked out for them. We all left that stadium that night knowing that SMS had made a huge mistake in the hiring process and we got to witness Pitt put the exclamation point on it.

The argument can be made that we really don't know if Springfield and SW MO will support the Bears football team if they were a realistic contender for the conference championship and to be able to make the playoffs. Attendance averages are not terrible for a FCS team and when is the last time they were legitimate (not preseason hype) contenders to make the playoffs. If they were contenders I think interest around the school and the area would be greatly increased.

I hear ya here, in terms of endearing themselves to HS football players and coaches they have failed for sure.

I was at that game as well. Took my sons to see it. Shared the same sentiment about it. At some point, you would think they would just stop the bleeding. Title 9 nine has something to do with it. Heard the admin. talking about it on the radio, recently.

I too attended that Pitt St at SMS game. "Pitt put the exclamation point on it." #Truth. As for support - Valid question. WTH would happen if they went 7-4, 8-3, then 9-2. I want to see what would happen.

With North and South Dakota State, Northern Iowa, Illinois State, SIUC (sometimes), and Youngstown State in the conference, that's a tall order.

If they had a chance in some of these games, and had some local talent on the roster, I would be there. I want to see the bears win and I love to see local kids succeed at the next level. SWmo has some good player you would think more would make it at that level then they recruit.

I would like to see the Bears reach out to some of these local youth leagues and offer the kids free tickets to get in, build your fan base!! Not like that stadium is close to being sold out right now. Have the game later at night so some of them can come after they play some games, be a cool experience for the kids. I remember when the lady bears would do that and they built a huge following back in the day!

I remember when the cut wrestling because of that, that was a sad day, they had a good program.

Meanwhile EVERYONE cheers during the pep rallies

If you have a good booster club president.

Did anyone catch the interview Petrino did with Art on 98.7 last night? Right before they went live the National ESPN commentary was about Bobby. Stating “He’s back” and “If your a good coach with bad decisions someone will hire you.” Definitely made it awkward for Art at the start of the interview but it was funny.

This is just my opinion but I just think this is a ridiculous hire. The whole thing has been awkward.

Awkward Moments
1. The spin/leak they allowed circulating with the rumor that it could be Briles to soften the blow when they announced the second most despised college football coaching name. They never contacted Briles but used the media to leak that out there.

2. The press conference where they introduce Petrino and the band continues to play while he is at the podium just staring awkwardly until they decided to finish. Who brings a band to a press conference? Have they ever watched how major college programs introduce coaches?

3. The interview with Art Hains.

This whole thing was a PR stunt and massive gamble by President Smart to get MO State's name in the headlines, which he was successful in doing but at a cost. He was not very smart hitching his wagon to Petrino. This has disaster written all over it and I see the three amigos (Smart, Moats and Petrino) all being gone in 2 years.

Dude knows football.......along with other unmentioned things...

I think it’s a good hire, for a school that seems to get in their own way with the football program. He’s not there to be some imaginary role model you guys paint college coaches to be. He’s there to put fans in the seats and win football games. And maybe a few memorable moments in between.

Football fans are funny. You heave the ball down the field and it bounces of the receiver’s hands. Crowd applauds.
Run it up the middle for a two yard gain and the crowd boos.

Rightfully so, bruh. :)

Mizzou had band members and cheerleaders at their press conference. Sorry, BRUH.

According to some folks every mistake requires a lifetime ban from coaching.

If he or anyone else had on 1 blemish on their record, you might have a point. But a repetitive string of bad decisions, and questionable immoral activities, over the course of a career, you don't deserve any more opportunities. I was always told, " If you make a mistake, there are consequences". Just my opinion.

Then DGB would have never left Springfield for mistakes. His job is to win games which I bet he gets that done but may be for a short time. College sports is a business.

He's coaching at Missouri State not at a major college or the NFL. That IS the consequence.

Does easy rider have a shot at 8 wins? What does MSU have coming back? He's good with Quarterbacks, some experience there would help.

Thought they were going after their last winning QB for their head coach. DeAndre something. From the early 90's, he has a son that is a HS senior who signed somewhere FCS or D1?

Agree. Some people are acting like he’s a monster. He’s been very successful, from what I’ve read very demanding, old school. He left the Falcons in the middle of the night, but he was going to get fired and when a job came open he bolted. Almost every college coach who has went to the NFL has been a disaster and returned to the college game (Holtz, Saban, Carroll, Schiano, to name a few). Got caught with the gal on the motorcycle. Major mistake but let’s be honest a ton of these coaches and men all over the world have a side piece and let’s face it, he was unlucky enough to get caught. Not condoning his antics, and totally get it those show some character flaws but he’s been hired to put folks in the seats and win games. I bet he does both.

I believe his son signed with Texas Tech where DeAndre is the RB coach.

They have won 13 games in 5 years. If they win 8 next yr, I’d be searching for a sculptor for his statue. Great coach or not, it’s going to take time to recruit and implement his program.

Miller's first year was 95. They did not play Pitt St that year. Do some research fella.

Well it has been a few decades ago memory not what it was, but really does it matter Miller sucked!!! They should have hired Broyles.

Miller had a 45 YEAR coaching career. 20+ years as an OC or Co-OC at K-State where he was part of hugely successful seasons.

He was 21-23 in 4 years at SMS. But I am sure you would be way better running your mighty might attack. You should coach K-State and Mo State at the same time while concurrently running their booster club.

I’m all for giving this guy a shot if he can make MSU football relevant. I agree with Bullit that SWMO needs some good college football. Right now the best football event you can find in this corner of the state is Webb City High School on a friday night.

And even though Springfield is not a ‘football’ town but still think MSU would be supported if there was something to get excited about. The few games I’ve been to were very well attended. Of course ⅔ of the fans leave at halftime. But I think it shows there is interest. The fact that the buyout happened shows some interest and backing. Paul Lusk was kept as basketball coach for about 5 seasons too many.
