KY3 is reporting Bobby Petrino is new Bears coach

Yeah, I guess we all should hire people who have repeatedly demonstrated immoral character. That is an outstanding thought.

Pretty ballsy hire. He's had a good deal of success in college. Obviously he can coach, especially offensively. Recruiting will be interesting. He will be a hard sell that he can be trusted based off of his poor personal choices. Him sitting in the homes of recruits surrounded by family will definitely test his sales pitch. Probably won't be there long if he is successful or not. If he is, he moves on to a bigger job. If not, they get rid of him and looking again for the next guy.

How are we defining "success" at Missouri State?

This is the sort of last ditch effort you make before you give up on football entirely.

it is not hyperbolic to say everyone at SMS is betting their job on this hire.

He knew about the serial sexual assaults and never acted.

In late July 2018, Briles turned over documents pursuant to a subpoena, which had not been previously produced by Baylor. The documents showed multiple senior Baylor administrators knew about a serial sexual assault assailant" in fall 2011, but, along with Briles, failed to act.
And it's important to note that it wasn't just a one or two time thing that he tried to cover up. I think it was like 52 victims that came forward saying they were assaulted in some form or fashion and that was attempted to be covered up by Briles. Nothing that Petrino did is anywhere near that scale of deplorable.

Well here is the thing neither one is probable a saint, but I am sure nobody on this board can say they have never made a mistake.

The thing that makes each of us different is how we handle them, do you own and learn from mistakes and correct it, or do you make an excuses as to why you did it...

I do hope it works out.

Petrino is almost 59. I don’t know what his goals are. If he still wants to be an FBS coach he can turn SMS around and use it as a steppingstone.

If he wants to swallow his pride and just enjoy coaching, rehab his reputation, settle in a nice area to live and ease into a fulfilling retirement as a popular figure that could happen.

He may or may not be able to coach. That remains to be seen. However, his character issues, or lack thereof, outweigh anything he could do on the field.

The dude coached teams to the Cotton, Orange, and Sugar bowls, plus a heisman trophy winner who is one of the top qb's in the NFL. I'd say he can still coach.

My opinion is as irrelevant as anyone. But, I like it. We all make mistakes. I hope he turns MSUBears into a football GIANT then stays coaching for about 12 years. Any Missouri college that is successful only helps the popularity of football and that is something I would like to think MOSports Football posters would all agree on.

It will take a few years to get this ship righted...if it can be righted, I would say not many FBS programs are going to want to hire a 60 year old, most are looking for the next coach who is young and energetic. If he does a good job I could see him retiring out, If it goes like all the other hires over the last couple of decades he will just be another successful coach who came to Springfield to ruin their coaching resume.

He may still be able to coach the game. But, credibility, accountability, and professionalism should be factors in the hiring process. Not sure this dude can check any of those boxes off. If nothing else, it will be a comical dumpster fire as some of the younger posters on here like to say.

Are you leather helmet old?

Is it possible to be a college HC without being a clean shaven, lying, conniving, look the other way, false promise making, job hopping, scoundrel?

I think you can without being perceived that way — and perception and reputation in college athletics goes a long way.

Beyond that, there are varying degrees of the things you mention.

Let me try this another way, it’s obvious BP has some issues that has evolved over time into a reputation, otherwise, he wouldn’t be headed to Missouri State.

He’s undoubtedly going to attempt to use his time at MSU as a springboard back into FBS, Power 5 football. It could work out well for both him and the Bears.

Or it could go completely sideways.

You left one word out. Getting a lot of NEGATIVE national press.

Who cares? Nationally most people weren't aware Missouri State existed until this morning, by next weekend there will be something else for the twitter social justice warriors to be outraged over. This too shall pass.

Can the guy coach? Yes.
Is he a splash hire? Yes.
Anyone gonna die because he got hired? No.

Who cares.

It seems like a publicity stunt by President Smart to get butts in the seats for a year, maybe two seasons. Exactly like what is being discussed with LA Chargers bringing in Old Tom Brady so they can fill seats in the new LA football stadium.

Petrino won't be there long. His wife loves Kentucky and don't see them uprooting to settle in SW MO. I hope they have a plan for after he bolts for a Conference USA team.

Maybe he will bring in/develop some good coordinators who can step up when/if he leaves.

Exactly the same thing we say when we read your posts: who cares?

Oh I think it is a calculated move.
You have to wonder was he brought in to be the savior, or to be the final nail in the coffin?

Final nail in the coffin? Why does everyone always say this, the program isn't going to be cut and I'm not sure it's ever truly been on the chopping block. Ever since SMS became Missouri State they've been on a mission to up their profile and a football program is a big part of that, win or lose.

Why would they kill a program 5 years after overhauling the stadium? You think folks involved with the school would rather pull the plug on the program and have a 17,000 seat stadium at the heart of campus and a two story admin building just sit vacant than attempt to revamp the program?

Not for nothing but if Mo State was in ANY other FCS conference they probably have several winning seasons in the past decade.
