How much recruiting is going on in STL

As far as it being “a problem”? Families send their kids to whatever school they feel is best for their kid. In STL, that includes moving your family into the district of whatever public school you want them to go to as well as selecting a private school.

It’s a huge issue for fans of rural schools that don’t have 30+ options within a 20 mile radius to choose from.

To me there is two types of recruiting.

Passive:
Your schools like CBC, Rockhurst etc. Where kids and parents want to go there because they have successful programs.

Active:
There is only one school I definitely put in this category. Trinity. What they did 4 years ago. They hired a coach that shopped around his services that he could bring a winning program to a school. One of that coach's requirements was he got to choose who got scholarships to the school. Those should be controlled and decided by school admin not a coach.

Cardinal Ritter and LN on the fence how they acquired such good talent so quickly.

If they have tuition waved or lessened they should be ineligible for mshsaa sports

If a nonresident kid wants to attend my public school, i cant pay his tuition right?

You’ve made that claim about Trinity repeatedly. I think you said you knew it because a friend of yours that’s a coach or an administrator told you so. Why haven’t they taken their story (assuming there’s proof) to MSHSAA?

Technically you could give the money to the non-resident student parents and they could pay. All public school districts set a rate for non-residents to attend.

Members of the AAA Conference did complain to MSHSAA about unfair practices by one of their members but they did nothing.

Cant remember if that was about Trinity or LN though

They actively use the radio waves up here to advertise their school for sports reasons. Invite the parents of Junior High kids to come visit.

It would’ve been Trinity because they’re the one in the AAA Conference.

You should record them and play them for MSHSAA. It’d be a slam dunk to prove they violated MSHSAA rules, right?

I think we all know about Trinty because Patterson couldn't help himself and BRAGGED about it!?!
It'll take the right people getting burned by this before there will be any change.
If I knew who they were?
I'd call them:cool:

MSHSAA has WiFi at their offices, so I’m sure they read the article you’re referring to. It appears that it isn’t illegal for the parents of 8th graders to enroll their kids into a high school because they want their kids to play for the coach at that high school. I know ... crazy, right?

One of the main tactics they use to lure them in is using the athletics as part of the school.

Aren’t athletics part of every high school? “Lure” makes it sound like you think the families are being tricked into sending their kids to a specific school.

Revert to the private schools don't recruit thread .... obviously Rockhurst wasn't promoting their fb team

The profile picture of fb players asking 8th graders to come visit their school was a coincidence

Fair is a place where they judge pigs at, it doesn’t exist in real life. That being said, that freaking CBC team was a lower level MIAA team, something needs to be done. The private schools can have there own tournament.

You’d think that they wouldn’t do that so openly if it were against MSHSAA rules. Seems odd that they aren’t punished for doing it. Gives the impression that it isn’t against the rules for kids to want to play sports at private schools.

That coach is now gone, and even beginning last season, players are coming to Trinity because they want to play for the program. This coaching staff does not actively recruit.

I've always been a fan of letting privates do what they want in the regular season....play who they wish ....be in any confrence they wish but come post season have 2 private divisions ....1-3 private schools in one division and 4-6 in another then duke it out . This year you would probably have Trinity vs LN in division 1 then Rockhurst vs CBC in division 2.

I 100% agree with that statement. But to get to that point unethical things were done by both the school admin hiring Patterson and the coach himself.

Rockhurst and most private schools have extremely good academics and I have zero issues with kids going there....but to compile an all Star team shouldn't be the reason ....but even if it is ....let them do that against other schools that play by the same rules

Im hoping the private schools win every class sometime so maybe the doubters have to open their eyes.

I ran some numbers a few years ago just out of curiosity and at the time it seemed privates accounted for about 40% of the representation in title games, which doesnt sound huge until you consider their share of overall enrollment. That was just in football, its actually a lot worse in some other sports.

I have no problem with private schools in general but its laughable to reject the idea that they have more and easier avenues to stack their deck than regular schools.

Yup. It’s a debate that’s been beaten to death. Here are the facts.

Private schools have advantages in comparison to public schools.

Private schools either follow rules or don’t. The people who can change things don’t care.

And this topic is beyond discussed at this point.

Truth

I went to a public school but the public school butt hurt is deep. Some of the best programs have all been public schools. Jeff City, Blue Springs, Webb City, Lamar, Hazelwood Central & East, Sumner, Staley, and I’m sure there are more I’m missing.

Fact is a lot school recruit. Not just private. I know this because I have seen it.

This right here, is the truth. They aren't in MO, but East St. Louis is a good example, going back to the late 90s when Sunkett left Riverview to go there and Damien Nash followed him there. Now tell me why in the world would a kid leave North St. Louis County to attend high school in East St. Louis? More recently, their current starting QB transferred from Trinity because he didn't want to sit behind Isaiah Williams for two years. Most of their athletes don't even reside in EStl, but in neighboring cities. Yes, public schools indeed recruit. Also, Cash in High School on the basketball side. It's no secret in the Stl area that they have recruited forever.

Parkway District High Schools have open enrollment. You’ll see coaches and assorted influencers working 8th graders all over West St. Louis County to woo kids to go to South, North, Central or West. Kirkwood and Webster have been enrolling kids from North County for years. Same with Ladue, same with high schools in Rockwood and now St. Charles County.
