MSHSAA exploring football championship options

Organization could move host site with Rams leaving St. Louis

The Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) is putting together a request for proposals for the Show-Me Bowl state championship football games, according to Jason West, media director.

The request became necessary after the NFL stripped St. Louis of the Rams, throwing the future of the Edwards Jones Dome into limbo.

"We are moving quickly to get a [request] out to any site interested in hosting the state championships," West said. "Certainly, St. Louis will be in the mix to keep the games, but as an organization, we have to do our due diligence to ensure a site or sites for the 2016-2017 championship games."

West said he understands any one outdoor facility may have difficulty hosting all seven championship games, including 8-man and Class 1 through Class 6. MSHSAA is prepared to entertain multiple sites in this regard.

"Another option we are considering is splitting the games up on different weekends," West said. "Currently, 8-man and Class 6 have an extra week to prepare for the state championship. We could play those games a week earlier and then only need a site to host five games, instead of seven."

While the Dome provided an indoor venue to ensure a controlled, pleasant weather environment for the teams and fans, it also came with a hefty annual price tag of $180,000 for MSHSAA.

In October, a Missouri House committee questioned MSHSAA leaders about facility rental agreements. Committee members specifically questioned the amount spent to secure the Edward Jones Dome and another $60,000 to $100,000 paid to the University of Missouri to use its facilities for state wrestling and basketball championships.

"We are doing our best to find a location," West said. "I feel confident we will settle on a location quickly."

Have to believe they are moving on, right? Have to believe the Dome authority is going to make that convention only space soon. Also I wonder if they had to give the turf to the Rams since it has their logo all over it

Have fun with that. I had no problem making the hour drive to watch teams play inside. No way would I sit out in some of the cold/rainy November weather, for a team I have no connection to, much less five games of it.

Class 6 also has an extra week to prepare. Got to be Mizzou. Perfectly located with all the amenities.

I feel the same way. MSHSAA had better start doing a better job of making sure the two best teams meet in the championship games or attendance is going to go down big time now. I will not ask my family to be cold all weekend watching the best team play a weak opponent.

How do you make that happen?

I wholeheartedly disagree. And I don't care if it does hurt attendance. Keep your family at home. I have yet to see a team win a state title that didn't deserve it.

Do you watch the Super Bowl? The so-called NCAA championship game? Do you realize those may not necessarily be the two best teams? They are two OF the best teams. But the best matchup may be in a semifinal, or in the NFL, a conference championship game. It's the nature of a tournament format.

Most tournaments including those you referenced rank the opponents so the best two teams don't play in the first round.

Yes theoretically.. But how often do you actually see all four 1 seeds make the final four.. Or both 1 seeds the super bowl. He's just saying that a bracket is always going to yield the best matchup in the championship game..

And besides that, it doesn't have too. That's not the goal.. The goal is to determine a champion. Whether a team loses in the first round or the championship game, doesn't matter. They lost. They aren't the champion.

Why is the tiny Monett paper the only one reports this?
Haven't heard a peep from anyone else.

that "tiny Monett paper" does a great job. I am sure other sports editors wonder what is happening as well, as far as not hearing from anyone else could be: 1. havent got to it yet. 2. lazy and really don't care. 3. tons of papers, some which may have mentioned it and we just dont know.4. too swamped and understaffed to do anything but report on games.

The lack of a good slogan has been the only thing keeping them just under the national sports-reporting and investigative-reporting radar for decades. Just some ideas:

No net like Monett.
The Monett Times is the only times.
Fastest times in Monett- The Monett Times.
Live, late-breaking, investigative- We ARE Monett.
In Monett times like these, you need the Monett Times.
For a good time in Monett, read the Monett Times.
In an age where many newspapers are casting less net, we are casting Monett.
This may be the 'end of times,' but it's the only the beginning for the Monett Times.
This clock is stuck on the Monett Times.
Mo Money, Monett. Less Money, Cassville.

Just trying to help.

I personally know Jared and he really has a cool fireworks stand during the summer.

I read the Monett paper more than my hometown paper, i'm just saying that no one else is reports what he has written.
Not saying it is inaccurate.

They use good words, and they put them in an order that seems to make sense.
I wish they offered a Spanish version.
