3R that is a GREAT story....I still can't believe someone would call that, much less in a state championship game!

Lynn Long was the head coach at Crystal City when I was in school. Not sure how long he was there or what their records were in that time frame. He may have taken over for Coach Herbert in mid 80's.

Randy Bishop had over 700 coaching at Eminence, Liberty, Branson, Lawrenceville, IL and others......

I thought Mitch Wilkins went over 1000? Is that counting his wins coaching girls?

[OTE="MOsportsStaff, post: 400917, member: 34"]3R that is a GREAT story....I still can't believe someone would call that, much less in a state championship game!
I was at that game. Dixon and Oran. Several interesting points about that game. If I am wrong please correct me. John Brown was the star for Dixon. Played at Mizzou and in the NBA. Another player on that team was Randall Irvin who went to Texas A&M. Ended up at Rolla. One of his teammates at Rolla was a starter for the Oran team. I believe, Matt Chaney wrote a book about that Oran team because of the similarity to the Texas-Western team. Back to the call, the year was 1967-68, the 10 second rule was implemented that year. In all the years I have watched basketball, I have only seen that called twice. That year in the regional finals at Bowing Green, it was called on a Troy player in the finals and then I saw it called at the State Final game that year. Help if I am off base, but one of the officials was Barth who went on the NFL fame and player shooting the free throw was named Johnson.[/QUOTE]
Another Interesting tid-bit about that Dixon team their coach the year before was George Flamank. George went to Mizzou and he always told me he led the Big 8 in rebounding his Soph. year at 6'5". He left Dixon and came to Warrenton in 1967-68. Which happen to be my 1st year of teaching. George led Warrenton to their 1st regional championship that year. He got out of coaching and went to Law school. He and I had some great times that year.

The shooter was Fred Johnson. He is the current head coach at Kelly HS in Benton, Mo.

The Dixon-Oran game was in 1969.

I discussed the 10-second call with my uncle just last year. He was a HS official at the time and was a spectator at the game, sitting with another official.

He claims he remarked to his buddy after Johnson's first free throw that he took an awfully long time to shoot....... So he decided to count, as if he were officiating. He says he did reach 10 before the shot was released..... Take that for what it's worth.

I was looking at Bess' record from 64-65 thru 94-95. That's 30 seasons if you remove his one season as assistant at 3R. His 30 year record between Oran and 3R over that span was 875-190.

The year I was born(1962), he had a losing season at Anniston. His next losing season was when I turned 56.
