According to the news story on the move, the family had been driving back and forth for 7 years, so I don't think the drive was that big of an issue. I don't have an issue with this transfer specifically, I just feel that MSHSAA needs to either have a set standard of 365 regardless, or none at all. It's just like the NCAA with their transfers, turning a blind eye to some while taking a hardline on others arbitrarily isn't right, especially when coaches can come and go as they please. It was a rumor that he was going to transfer to Kickapoo last summer because of the possible consequences for the triplet switching that made national news. the Coach wasn't fired last year, so they stayed, won their championship, and now they have all gone their separate ways after the Dora board didn't renew his contract this year.
2/3 of the season, gives everyone a penalty that will cause some to rethink, but allows everyone to play, including the “legit” moves.
The problem is and always has been is that if all you have to do to get away with anything is simply move — then those with means can get away with virtually anything.
The reality is that most of the “moves” these days are moves for athletic reasons. It gives those with means a free pass to transfer whenever, wherever and however they want, and penalizes those who don’t have the means.
And let’s get serious, there are a whole bunch of “moves” that are utter BS. If you are renting from AAU teammate family and still live in your old home in your old town and have kept your old job, is that really a move?
If you hire dad of superstar kid to babysit ISS and pretend to coach the 7th grade B team, is that legit?
Everyone is playing a game with the current system and everyone knows it. The rules are enforced ham handed, or are easily skirted. The simple solution is everyone sits with no exceptions under any circumstance for 2/3 the next season.
Or, everyone gets to play no matter what with no one sitting regardless of the reasons for the transfer.
Problem solved.
