MSHSAA.tv has locks as far as the eye can see.
Anyone ever ask how much they steal in streaming each year?
At least in breaking bad those criminals had to earn their own money.
MSHSAA just leeches off people that do all the work.
How much do you think you could have pulled in if they streamed back in the 80s? or did you sell bootlegged VHS tapes of the games?

Sadly, the technology did not exist in the 80s for streaming. But it was available during my last few years as booster club president. And let me tell you, The Ampipe Booster Club RAKED IN the revenue!!! So I'd venture to say we would have made a pretty penny streaming in the 80s.
Now I have NEVER sold a bootlegged VHS before. We would put together a highlight reel at the end of every season. Seniors got a free copy. Underclassmen and the community could purchase copies. Having said that, were there some occasions where we would exchange game tapes with another team? And said team would get a game from the previous year, in black and white, or partially obstructed? Well, I wouldnt know. I wasnt on the coaching staff...

Last season, to view the state basketball finals I believe the service charge (er, I mean "convenience fee") was over 15%. Won't swear to that, but I remember it was enough that I remember thinking that it would've made Ticketmaster jealous.
I mean total overall revenue for all sports PPV and skimming the gate.
Wonder if my local rep could get that info for me.
Oh, sorry, I don't have that number and I would imagine that's a closely guarded secret.
In 2022 they reported $326,935 in broadcasting fees revenue. That's obviously not profit as they would need to pay hudl or blueframe or whoever a chunk as well.
It would be a travesty next week if someone were to "accidentally" fly a drone over Damon Hefner Stadium to capture Brody Claritin and London Calling lead the Carthridge Bengals in battle against Kaden Spyro and the Shoshone KrazyKats. Not that I'm implying anything.
For the life of me, I still can't figure how this doesn't get challenged or why the schools allow it. Same with the district tickets. MSHSAA has to gain revenue to pay for their fat cats and their inflated salaries and benefits. That part I understand. The part I can't digest is why the member schools just bend over and take it. So many district admin hide behind the "it's what is best for kids" BS statement. I'd love for someone to explain how this is best for kids.
Legally. Or just stream it and tell MSHSAA and their portal to kick rocks. Obviously either would be subject to the courts and a legal process. It's just hard for me to believe something that is produced by someone else can be held hostage by MSHSAA and their portal to hell.
Maybe now's the time to organize NIL for HS kids since that's who is really earning that money.

I just don't think it's a big enough problem for anyone to pick a fight and take it on. MSHSAA would put up a fight and threaten shortages of officials and whatnot if they lose the revenue stream. We all know none of the dozen or so director positions would be affected or eliminated.
I'd like to see schools just ignore this and say 'nope' and force mshsaa's hand but I don't see that happening.
I never really cared for or against mshsaa all that much until this and the mandatory digital ticketing system which were both just blatant money grabs that don't help member schools, fans or anyone except the organization itself.
I assume we are all aware game revenues (admission) are used to cover event expenses such as game officials, chain gang, gate operators, press box staff, maintenance (trash), security and in some places fire/EMS standbys. I know some schools have school employees work gate/pressbox/concessions/maintenance on game nights and some do this as volunteers, some do it for a stipend, every place is different. Let's estimate expenses for a regular season game run between $2,500-$3,000 for everything previously mentioned, throw the number higher if you it seems low.
During the postseason, does MSHSAA cover those expenses now that they are collecting gate fees? Or does the school still cover the estimated $2,500-$3,000 in expenses first and then the rest of the revenues are sent to MSHSAA?
I cannot speak for the rest of the state, but in Southwest Missouri game officials are paid $140 per official per game (a five man crew will cost $700 plus mileage for each official traveling to the game site for the school district). I have been told game officials who are assigned postseason games receive a bump in pay based on what zone they are working in Missouri. I don't know the zones and I would defer to someone who is a current game official to answer the question on zones and zone pay for postseason officiating assignments.
As a former sports commission director and having hosted a wide variety of events, I understand the budgeting of events -- the expense vs. revenue offset. Having bid upon, secured and hosted MSHSAA's postseason events in the past, I understand MSHSAAA as am organization needs to generate revenues to offset expenses. What I do not know is the breakdown of expenses per sport, per event vs. revenues. It's obvious some generate more than others and therefore its not an apples to apples comparison.
I'm not defending MSHSAA, I would jump at an opportunity to work for them, but before I spent 17 years in the sports travel and tourism industry I spent eight years as a sports writer asking questions similar to being discussed here. No harm in asking how much and where it goes, but I feel confident there are more expenses than we are aware of or accounting for.

The number listed above was strictly revenues from streaming. From what I've been told from school officials, a school gets a certain percentage of the gate to cover administration. I'm assuming that number increases as you'd need more of all the listed above for a state semifinal in football vs. a first round softball game.
I think there are better ways to manage the streaming and ways that ultimately would allow for more revenue than they are getting now while ultimately giving fans a lot more access, and most importantly letting more folks see these student athletes in action.
The way i look at how they should do streaming similar to basically making it free to get in. It costs MSHSAA no different amount of money if 5 people or 5,000 watch it. But if you or I could buy a season pass, similar to NFHS, you'd likely watch 40-50 games... instead you may not watch any. Similar to if you let 5000 people in at a lower admission cost and they all spend more money at the concession stand, the school makes more $$$.
Week 10 games I believe the gate money is split between the two schools with MSHSAA getting more the next rounds.
For the media companies, they have to pay a rights fee to broadcast games and then also have to go through the PPV process. They get a small cut is what I was told from a media company but the numbers aren't what they would see on a normal game night.
