District Forfeits

In 8 man, Keytesville forfeited this week to Schuyler County. Schuyler has forfeited next week to North Shelby.

Keytesville did not forfeit, they withdrew from the postseason because they had too many players going to the National FFA Convention to field a team. So they were never included in the playoff field.
I heard Schuyler County was going to forfeit to North Shelby but never got confirmation yet.

Ahhhhhhhhhh...Nothing like accepting a challenge and embracing the spirit of competition.

Football team sucks but that dairy judging team has a real chance

It is pathetic that our National FFA interferes with a sport (or a sport interferes with National FFA). Piss poor job scheduling. FFA back that up 2-3 weeks and not nearly as many teams/kids/coaches affected.

I taught Hs Ag for a few years out of college. It is not hard to make it work if both sides cooperate. I have even dropped football players off at the airport to get home for Friday night. It can be done. Competing in a national contest unfortunately trumps a first round district playoff game in this particular situation.

My point is that it should NOT be scheduled the way that it is.
Round 1 is every school that participates in football.
Back the convention up one week and it is only 1/2 of the schools, 2 weeks and it is only 1/4.
I grew up and live on a farm, but we should NOT be forcing the kids to have to choose.
As far as "I can get them there",
How about we have them go play the football game then drive four to seven hours and then they compete in FFA, is that ideal for FFA? We both know it is not.
So, move it back a few weeks, it is really a simple solution.

National FFA has been at the end of October as long as I can remember. Probably doesn't affect all 50 states; you can't please everyone. Some folks don't know this, but in Missouri FFA is part of the vocational education program, and DESE oversees it. DESE is really "the state." Lots of folks (me included) refer to MSHSAA as "the state," but that's not correct.
As to what a solution might be, I got NO idea. None.

My cousin played on a volleyball team in Kansas a few years ago that forfeited a Final 4 trip because so many of the girls chose to go to the FFA convention instead.

Could it be that these young men and women see that FFA will do more for them down the road than a game?
I know kids that went to state & national FFA at some of the different schools I went to growing up and most talked about getting drunk and “partying” in the hotels so let’s not act like most of these kids consider it some kind of power move for life. Hahaha

It was my first time getting hammered during high school. Sophomore year.

Was Keytesville the only school in the co-op with the problem, or did the other two schools (Brunswick and Northwestern {Mendon} have the same issue? Just thought of that?
And also, MSHSAA website now has North Shelby advancing to the district semifinals on Nov. 12.

Based on what I was told, the amount of players missing would prevent them from fielding a team. I did not get a breakdown of missing players from each school of the co-op or know how many players are from each school of the co-op.

I grew up on a farm and have two National Farmers in my family. Most people I knew that went to the National Convention took it pretty seriously. Yes they did party or have a good time but they was there more for the award , judging and competition.

You're giving young people FAR too much credit. They see an opportunity to be around their buddies and opposite sexes from all over the country for a few days with what equates to pretty minimal supervision. Theoretically speaking.

They're probably the exception, and not the rule. I've been as a student, a college student, judged, and supervised. There are no doubt some that take it very seriously. There are others that, well, enjoy the ride.

This right here. DECA was the best national convention I went to in school and that was in Orlando. BETA was the most fun in state one. For whatever reason it was pretty much all the small schools from SE Missouri and they were going to Branson for the weekend. They let loose lol. Wish I had my knowledge from college back then, would have been a better time.

Lord...I've got a GREAT Beta Convention story from when it was in STL and I was in HS. I used my 10 mins of fame in a bubble to my advantage.

St. Charles forfeited? Haven't they done this previously?

The question all these schools need to ask themselves is this one:

. "If you were the higher seed or the top seed in the district would you be forfeiting under the same circumstances???"

Or...would you find a way to play the game?

It’s a great question that I think we all know the answer to.

Its a great reason to change the system. I like the current system but it needs to be tweaked a bit. Two solutions. Keep current district setup BUT either
1) top 4 seeds advance to playoffs and bottom 4 play each other for one more game, I would suggest 5 v 6 and 7 v 8. OR
2) top 6 advance to playoffs. 3 v 6 and 4 v 5 and 1 and 2 get first round byes and 7 v 8 for the extra 10th game.
Just seems to make sense. I wonder if MSHSAA will do anything since it seems several low seeds are "opting out" of the playoffs now.
