Alright I went ahead and entered the schedules into my spreadsheet so we'll give it a whirl until teams start cancelling. It's week one and with all the uncertainty, plus I haven't read up on teams like I normally have at this point. So my picks are totally shooting from the hip. And who knows what can happen this particular week 1.

  • Nixa at Branson - Nixa has a new coach and maybe a promising future. But I'll go with Branson opening at home. 24-21
  • Ozark at Carthage - Ozark has caught Carthage with their pants down more than once in week 1 but I like the Tigers. 35-14
  • Webb City at Joplin - Joplin lost big names but they have confidence and a good coach. Webb City has all those things and more but I'll pick Joplin 35-28 because things are weird this year, covid is running wild through the R7 district, plus Webb will be playing without a crowd advantage (even on the road) for the first time in over 30 years.
  • Republic at Neosho - No idea here. I keep thinking Neosho is going to make a run but they keep letting me down. I'll still go with them at home 17-14
  • CJ at Willard - CJ might be poised for a comeback. If they indeed have numbers and talent they will eat Willard for lunch. But if there are too many kinks trying to run complex schemes, Willard has the horsepower to cash in. I'll say CJ 28-14.
So basically I just picked home teams except Carl Junction.

Branson - more talent coming back
Ozark - Hangover and never bet on the Carthage coaching staff in games that matter.
Webb - They're not letting a repeat of last year happen
Neosho - they'll be #4 at the end
Willard - Gut feeling

Never bet on the Carthage staff in games that matter? They won a OT state title game last year, tough hard fought game on the biggest stage possible for a HS team and came through in OT.

Last year's playoffs was the outlier. I still wouldn't bet on it.

I think Carthage has played well in some pretty big games over the last several years. Have they won them all no, but they have won many of them. I was actually more impressed with beating FZ last year than maybe any game I've seen. That game was huge for Carthage. In my opinion it was an extremely well coached team that won in the way they did. FZ was really good, playing at home and had momentum (and the lead) late in the game.

The only thing that really sticks out to me was the field goal play vs Webb City in the 2Q last year. I felt like the odds of making that long FG were significantly less than completing a long pass. Maybe coach was trying to eliminate the risk of interception or maybe he thought the kid could boot it that far. And maybe it wasn't just the play call, but the fact that the kids clearly weren't fully prepared to execute the play.

The second they lined up I shook my head 'good lord why' knowing the absolute best case scenario was a missed FG. But hey not every call will be the perfect decision.

Some might say the 2pt at Joplin was a bad call but I don't know. It was a risk and it didn't pay off. In my opinion not a terrible call though. Coach Rod lost a state championship on a similar call.

You sound like a dad that is upset about his sons playing time. Haven’t they won like 6 district title’s in a row?

Nixa 48-42
#1 Carthage 49-7
#1 (#86 USA) Webb City 28-24
Neosho 47-35
Carl Junction 28-27

Nixa rolls the short handed Covid-19 Pirates. 42-14 NIXA
Carthage pulls away late against Ozark. 35-21 CARTHAGE
Webb City wins big in revenge season over the Eagles. 49-24 WEBB
Republic's D was the worst in the state last year. 28-21. NEOSHO
Look for a bounce back season from the Bulldogs. 35-28. CJ

So as of now the game most in question is CJ at Willard with CJ slightly favored. All the rest have a pretty solid favorite.
