The Sticks of Missouri
I thought since there is usually a ton of chatter on class 1 (we show up all the other classes :) ) We could go ahead and center all of that talk here.

I previously posted my top 10 and extras, but I thought it might be cool to get list up of great matchups across the state and any roster additions/changes/injuries or outside factors that will affect the season. Lets get this stove heated up!!

Key Matchups I see so far (obviously excluding potential tournament and Shootout matchups:

(I will admit I don't know much about SEMO, and I'm missing some matchups in SW and NE quarters too, let me know who I should be adding)

Key Game List:
11/22: Jefferson (Jeff) opens up against Maryville (Class 3 District Champ from Last year) -postponed from Maryville football
12/6: Walnut Grove (WG) vs. Greenfield (new future district matchup should be good) Walnut Grove by 20
12/8: Braymer vs. Norborne (coming off 19-3 record last year) Braymer
12/8: Meadville vs. Hardin-Central (Meadville reload last year and Hardin always solid) meadville
12/9: Jeff vs. Mound City (potential District 16 Championship) Jefferson by 8
12/13: Worth County (Woco) vs. North Andrew (NA) (Many talk about these two being top tier in NW) north andrew
12/16: St. Joseph Christian vs. Woco (New coach at SJC the talk of the town in St. Joseph..new faces in this year) rescheduled
12/20: NA vs. Jeff (rivalry game and potential sectional round matchup) north andrew
1/3: woco vs. stanberry rematch - WOCO wins by 11
1/6: walnut grove vs. hermitage
1/6: woco vs. braymer
1/7: potential Glasgow vs. meadville tourney final in marceline
1/17: NA vs. Stanberry(defending class 1 champ moves up to class 2)
1/20: NA vs. Braymer (Braymer reloads and gets some players back from injury from last year)
1/30: NA vs. St. Joseph Christian (SJC) (potential district 15 championship)
1/17: SJC vs. Braymer
1/3:Jeff vs. South Holt (possibly a conference title decider and potential sectional matchup)
1/6: Braymer vs. Woco potential GRC west championship game
1/24: Winston vs. SJC (measurement game for Winston and SJC)
1/30 Scott County Central (SCC) vs. Advance (2 top tier teams in SEMO)
1/31: Winston vs. Mercer (Mercer moves to NW quarter and took Glasgow to the buzzer last year hdc conference title game
2/3: Meadville vs. Novinger(had a great record last year)
2/9: WG vs. Hartville(defending class 2 state champ)
2/10: Glasgow vs. NF rematch
2/16: Norborne vs. Meadville (a couple under-radar sleepers play)

I think you have your Class 1 NWMO picks about right...
North Andrew is probably the favorite....with a good field chasing...Winston, Jefferson, Worth County, Mercer, Braymer,....maybe Mound City and SJ Christian too.

I think you did your homework pretty well on your "key matchups".
2 or 3 games I disagree with slightly-
I don't know how well Hardin will match with Braymer or Meadville this year....graduation hit Coach Layman pretty hard....his son is a heck of a player/shooter but I don't know if he can carry them against solid teams. (we will see).
The other one....not sure if South Holt can play with Jefferson. This is their chance
to announce their arrival....but I give Jefferson a decided advantage in the outcome.

It's fun to watch teams rise up over a year or two...North Andrew has been on the cusp for a couple years (but Stanberry and Winston blocked) and now they (NA) are a favorite....Worth County is trying to fight their way onto the big stage.

Great job...thanks for the time and effort.

And I wasn't knowing too much about HC, just know historically they come in with a good record to districts. We will also have to see if football (injuries) affect anything going forward too (Greenfield still in 8 man playoffs, NA, South Holt, etc. )

I'm hoping to hear from some other regions regarding sleepers, etc.

You could get a good report from Coach DN of Meadville. He played most of the NWMO favorites this summer. Be interesting to hear his thoughts. Someone tell that guy to check in please.

One thing Greenfield has for them this size and athleticism. They will have four starters over 6'2, bring a couple of players off the bench that are 6'3-6'4. A junior guard that was as good as it gets at this level. I compare him to the Meinders kid but with the ability to shoot outside of 15 consistently. Another senior guard that is 6'2-6'3 that is explosive. 6'5 post player that is a junior that can as well.

Walnut Grove as always will be well coached and will get out and defend. Thomazin is one of the best pure shooters in SWMO, but should be interesting to see who comes into that point guard role. They may not need a solid point guard with the way the Gilkey kid and others get out and defend. Gilkey is that guard every coach wants. High energy, peddle to the metal type guard that can get you easy points in transition and keeps possessions alive if you don't block out.

With all of that size, does Greenfield try to press or do they play a slower tempo?

They can do both. Good speed throughout the rotation plus size and athleticism. Last year they relied on more pressure in the half court than the full court.

1 Walnut Grove

2 Winston

3 Scott County Central

4 Glasgow

5 Leeton

6 Gideon

Thoughts on this? Someone had said school of the Ozarks is class 2, Gideon was very senior heavy, but I guess that's why they play the game :)

School of the Ozarks is in Class 2. They are in District 11.

if you break it into quarters:

NW: Winston, Mercer, Jefferson (3 of the districts in the region represented)
NE: Glasgow (only team in region...do they have any challengers?)
SW: Walnut Grove, Leeton (different districts...wondering when Greenfield shows up here)
SE: SCC, Gideon, Advance (SCC and Gideon in same district, Advance returning quite a bit in another district)

Preseason rankings are based quite a bit on last season and any word of what happens in regards to returners. Greenfield, even though they return a bunch a good players, their schedule stays the same from a 14-12 record. That may have hurt them with any recognition of the schedule.

SW: you can never count Drexel out in this area.

I looked back and saw North Andrew has been eliminated by Stanberry the past few years, and have won some district titles. I know they have a pretty good record, what style of play do they have? How would they match up with Winston? I heard Winston has some size this year for the first time in a while.

I see that School of the Ozarks has been removed from the Class 1 rankings...and replaced with North Andrew. Quick and easy to fix a slight typo.

Gallatin Tournament has some good action on Thursday for class 1 basketball. Winston plays host Gallatin and Braymer goes against Trenton.

As mentioned in another thread St. Joseph christian off to a 4-0 start with a PVI tournament title in hand as well.

Also Worth County and Stanberry in their first matchup of the year (of at least 2)

Great basketball all across the state!

Stanberry, Walnut Grove, Glasgow, Meadville, Winston, SJC all picking up tournament championships.

Anyone have the Walnut grove/greenfield score or a report?
Walnut Grove hit 12 3's and forced Greenfield to be inconsistent on the offense end. Free Throws proved to make the game look a little worse than it was. WG shot a lot and made a lot of FTs, Greenfield struggled from the line. Both teams were in the bonus by the end of 3Q. WG hit 3's at the right time and made FTs down the stretch. Greenfield could never get it to single digits in the 3rd and 4th when they had the deficit at 10 or 11 several different times.

WG may be a better shooting team this year than last year. Thomazin, Keith, and the younger Meinders hit at least three 3's each.

I saw the new poll is out:

Class 1

1 Walnut Grove 5-0

2 Winston 4-0

3 Glasgow 3-0

4 North Andrew 2-0

5 Hermitage 4-0

6 Scott County Central 3-2

7 Worth County 4-1

8 Advance 2-1

9 Jefferson 1-0

10 Eminence 2-0

I think the top three look solid and SCC may get some losses...to big schools. Walnut Grove's strength of schedule is very good. North Andrew has done some jumping without any real evidence yet. We will have to wait and see when they get into a good stretch. It looks like WoCo on tuesday coming up. I'd say Meadville, Mercer, & St. Joseph Christian deserve a look. Greenfield is probably going to have to wait after that 20 point lost to WG. We shall see, these things sort themselves out usually, don't they? Jefferson has taken a loss to Worth County, but are 3-1. A lot of schools aren't kept up on MSHSAA with their records to this point from what I'm seeing.

Anybody else people are missing out on?

So, found this gem on YouTube checking out great class 1 teams from the past few years. What an incredible game! (Winston vs. Stanberry 2015) David Daniel Haley and Alex McQuinn vs. Goliath (aka Jordan Leonard and Craig Lewis)

Also, new poll is out and not much movement at all. All the same teams, just shuffled slightly. Meadville belongs in the rankings. Anyone want to carpool over and watch them play Glasgow January 7th in Marceline for the Marceline tourney championship? :)

There are some great matchups around the state coming out of break...
