Best Missouri HS Running Backs

The biggest moment of my football career involved Brad Hocker... 6th grade youth football I caught a halfback pass from him for a touchdown. We lived and played at Drexel. The following year we both moved, me to the bright lights and big city of Blue Springs and he, just up the road to Archie. I never played organized football again as my parents guided me towards soccer and baseball.

Must have been a different grade you are thinking of, because when Brad was in 6th grade he played Optimist Club football in Harrisonville for Jack Flannery's Chiefs team. I was a 7th grader and the division was 6th and 7th grade combined. We played in the Super Bowl that season under the lights. My Broncos against his Chiefs. They won and he was a he'll of a player as a kid.

One I remember one from Carl Junction Brian Deem believe he graduated in 1986, lead them to the playoffs in 83 and 84 under H.B. Davis. Maybe Uncle Rico remembers him, but he might be too young.

I have seen a lot, and I mean a lot, of the greats mentioned on here and I can tell you that of those I have seen the two I would have not wanted to have to tackle are Rasheed who would just run you over and and never slow down and Warmack, though smaller would just break your ankles and then run you over.
Now, showing my age, I will add some names that many of you won't even know:
Earl "Flash" Denny Golden City ---What a physical specimen.
Norris Stevenson Vashon
Mel West J.C. Jays
Jon Staggers Helias -- and a really nice guy to boot.

All went to play on some very good Mizzou teams in the 60's.

There was a rb out of caruthersville who went to and starred at mizzou, dont remember his name was a stud.
Boone Romine(or any of the Romine family who played rb at centralia), will evans was a stud at centralia
Tony Hall out of South shelby was a stud

Are you thinking Jimmy Jackson? or maybe William Moore?

Sure someone mentioned "Tank" Sherman from Platte County. He was a beast...

Trying to remember one good back from Kearney..................hmmm just cannot come up with one, sorry.

He was a year behind me in school. I was 6th and he was 5th grade at the time. I should have clarified.

I got to see Tony Temple and Darren Sproles compete with their respective teams against each other back in 2003 or 2004, can't remember which.

What a display. A real offensive show for the ages.

Pretty sure the Rock won that game at ODAC. Back then it was natural turf, but that didn't slow either of those two down.

I'm trying to find the stats...I'm sure both backs combined for 500+ yards.

I'm pretty sure Sproles and Temple were years apart. Sproles senior football season was 2000, wasn't it?

But Olathe North with Sproles did lose multiple times to Rockhurst.

I'm pretty sure that Tony Temple played as a Freshman on the 2000 Rockhurst team

You're right, Sproles and Temple did not graduate h.s. the same year. They overlapped each other. Sproles did graduate Olathe North in 2000-01. Temple graduated the Rock in 2003-04. So, two years apart.

Not among the NFL elite on this list, but Bailey Moore was one of if not the best back I ever had at Mt. Vernon. Might have went 145 with pads on in the rain and ran about a 5.3 40. But I saw him run through a lot of tackles and don't remember him getting caught.

Steve Sater from Mount Vernon was an awesome open field runner. Played at Southern and excelled as a returner.

They weren't elite in historic standards but I'll name some of the best backs I've seen Webb city have in no particular order.
Chris Taylor - averaged 11 yards per carry his senior year ..went to Arkansas for baseball
Phoenix Johnson ....averaged almost 10 ypc ...Missouri state
Maddy Johnson ...Missouri state
Braxton Baker - kid was impossible to tackle 1 on 1 . Think he went to a school for the deaf in Washington DC
Marty Rogers ....best free safety Webb's probably ever had and was an explosive back ....Southern Illinios
Andrew Stanley - short, compact ...Barry sanders type ..strong as heck ...Air Force
I remember Steven Crane and Matt Berry being very good as well but I was too young to tell you much about them.

Their best backfield had to be (2011?) John Roderique qb (Sam Houston St. , Pitt State) Maddy Johnson (Missouri State ) Phoenix Johnson ( Missouri State ) and sometimes they would stick Christian Hoffman back there as an extra blocker and would occasionally run the ball (Missouri State)

"Moving Marvin" Johnson from Potosi back in the late 70's...played college ball at Purdue.

Michael Washington from Monroe City...big RB with speed...played at Mizzou.

Curtis Brown from St. Charles HS...played at Mizzou in the late 70's and in the NFL for the Bills and Oilers.

I remember nearly every RB in this thread...damn I'm old...

Gene Roll of Harrisonville. Gene would start at fullback for 3 years for the Missouri Tigers. He was a four-year letter winner at Missouri, and the leading ground gainer in 1955. He was awarded the "Outstanding Back Award" by the MU Quarterback Club for his performance that season.

Darnell Jefferson

I would say Vinnie "The Vooch" Salvucci, but we all know what happened in the biggest game of his high school career. Not to mention his run ins with the law!
Wendall Brown from West Canaan Texas was 1 hell of a running back. The coach always called his number until we got down to the red zone. Then he'd give it to a White running back, or some dump off to a Tight End. Sad stuff....
