Hahaha...they have 11 Kansas Schools...make that 5 or 6 and it is much more accurate. Five Kansas Schools in the top 10? That is laughable.. 2 at best. OMG...hilarious. I love how political they are...no basis in reality.

Top 10 Includes (and not in any order:)

Kansas: Bishop Miege, BV North
Missouri: Blue Springs, Rock, LSW, LSN, Staley, Park Hill, Fort Osage, Blue Springs South

Lee's Summit won't be bad, either. That whole school district looks to have a strong fall 2018.

Not sure what happened with 20-25. Tried to clean up but wouldn't let me.
Time to change that "Highway 92 rivalry" deal. Welcome Smithville to the fold...........all three (PC, Smithville, KTown) look to be very strong this year. KCHI hit on the Warriors RB already. Kearney has a returning, very promising QB plus one of the best RBs, a third year starter, in the history of the program returning. Cannot wait to see all three match up as they should be 1-2-3 in the revamped Suburban Small Seven.

Were they once all in the KCI as class 2 teams?

Yes they were at one time or another. Goes to show how this part of the KC metro has grown! When we moved to Holt in 1976 Kearney's main junction had a feed store now it is among several (and increasing by the year) modern strip malls and it was pretty routine to see local farmers driving their tractors on particularly Hwy 33. The thing is, bhunt, the growth hasn't nearly stopped. I expect both Platte County and Kearney to grow to Class 5 within the next two years.

1990 Population:
Kearney: 2,681 (Today: 10,000+)
Lawson 2,060 (Today: 2,406)

Yes it is! Spectrum Sports makes me want to puke!! I miss the old Metro Sports!
Since Mick left they no longer even do a HSFB preview show, either. I am thinking about going satellite seems, from what I see, most in our neighborhood already are doing so.

You're more optimistic than I am, top...I'm nervous about a step-back this year. It's early, but I didn't see much from the O (beyond Connery) in last Saturday's display. With that opening schedule, Gray needs to come out of the gate quickly.

Here's a listen for you (today): We're talking KEARNEY BULLDOG FOOTBALL today on Kearney Live. Listen in at noon today as Mike Davis talks with Coach Josh Gray about 2018 Bulldog Football! 102.7FM and online at www.1027fm.rocks

I hear ya but I don't put much stock at all in anything until the season starts. In years past too many kids have gotten hurt in pre-season and I think coaches wisely try to avoid that. Hopefully the line play both sides of the ball is considerably better than what I saw last year. I am tuning in now. Thanks!

Kearney started in 1A and did not become 2A until 71, 3A in 78 and 4A in 82.

Platte County was 2A until 82 and became Class 4 in 2008.

Smithville started in 2A in 68 and was 1A in 69 and 70. They became Class 3 in 98 and Class 4 in 2010.

Before there was a KCI conference, I believe these schools were all part of the Northwest 11.

Old as I am that is way before my time: who were those 11 schools?

Kearney didn't even have football until 1962...by then Excelsior had already played 65 seasons of high school football.

WATCH out for Lee's Summit North. Eight returning starters on O and D. No one is close to that.
Everyone likes them this year. They showed flashes last year so no reason this cannot be a huge 2018 there plus I believe they have a very, very good RB returning.

Wow found an hour during a busy day at work to tune in. Thanks alot for letting me know. Sounds like that was one week ago or so. After listening sounded like the O Line will be improved. Didn't hear anything about the WR corps but know all of them were seniors so that would be a starting point. Another point I didn't make earlier I am really, really looking for is defensive speed. That has, in my opinion, been down some the last two years.

First to JN - My dates are only back to when the playoffs started in the fall of 1968. Note that the Kearney enrollment did not go over 100 until the 58-59 school year and probably did not go over 200 until the very late 60s.
A correction on my part from above. Kearney was never a part of the KCI. That league was formed for the 79-80 school year and what was the old Northwest 11 became the new KCI 10 because Kearney dropped out. Kearney was independent in football in 79 but did join the MRVC for basketball and other sports that school year and football the following year.
Northwest 11 - Platte County, Smithville, Kearney, Lawson, Lathrop, Plattsburg, Mid-Buchanan, East Buchanan, North Platte, West Platte and, the one you did not think about, DeKalb. DeKalb may have dropped out after 84-85 because of the size difference and started playing in the Platte Valley Conference.

Their O line got smoked by Fort Osage last year in the early part of the season..torched. Outside runs were destroyed. They just started using the zone blocking schemes and they could not stay up with the better athletes on Fort O's squad. Not enough speed.

I can see that Suburban Gold having a one or two loss champion this year. Could even be multiple teams finish on top.

That is Fort O, a Class 5 contender. I am only concerned with how they will fare in Class 4 why I am a bit stunned still that they scheduled Staley again.

All cool info....thanks for sharing. Always neat to see how conferences were aligned in the past. How some communities grow and others don't. Location matters.

Glad you caught it (a lot of coach speak, but some insight.) I think there's some beef on the OL; receivers are completely unproven - Gray (unlike his predecessor) had a penchant for playing SRs when the games were in hand. Jones played the young guys, and there were Srs on roster that were never going to play.
I expect the secondary to be improved - that was the real problem on D as I saw it last year (one side in particular.) I'll be surprised if the front is improved from last year - the Piburn kid was a 2 year starter and was a beast; Mordecai is a returning stud at LB - like the O, there's quite a bit of unproven filling out the rest.

I agree with you on Staley - that game should have been removed. Getting turbo'd early in the year isn't a good thing for a team trying to find itself. Was glad they got LN off the schedule - that game w/b too personal w/Greg there. I do think LN will be much improved this year.

I should have stated "starting over" point about the WRs, a big concern given the days of 3-yards and a cloud of dust are long gone. I am not so concerned about them getting turboed this year (still contend they airmailed last year's game about one quarter in) just don't think it benefits them to play that game. That rivalry ship has sailed, frankly. North had better be much improved if they move to Class 6. It will be beyond a war zone in this region this year.

I am just a fan who doesn't tend to "sugar coat" anything and think the best players belong on the field. If they are all Sophs and Jrs so be it. If you are correct and the D line is not improved from last year that will spell some trouble BUT I do think C4 overall is a bit down in 2018 and the opportunity for them to go far exists BUT no doubt they have holes to fill (like 90 percent of other schools).

Given I am on morning shift M-F this year will attend games every week. Hate it but gotta wait for class-district assignments to issue predictions.

Again thanks justhafax! Best of luck to the KDogs!

Kearney didn't drop out of the Northwest 11 conference. The other schools wanted to kick Kearney out because they were growing so fast, but were too chicken to do it. So the other 10 schools all quit the Northwest 11 conference and then formed the KCI conference. This happened one night before a scheduled meeting of the Northwest 11 conference.

Kearney enrollment that year was 646. Next biggest was Platte Co. at 405 and Lawson with 380.
