I would love to see 18 team play-off. ACC, Big 10, SEC and Big 12 all have 2 divisions. Winner of each gets an automatic bid. No championship game needed. (conference champ can be best record). American, Conference USA, Mt West, Sunbelt and MAC all have 2 divisions, play a conference championship game for automatic bid. That has it at:
ACC- 2 auto, Big 10- 2 auto, SEC- 2 auto, Big 12- 2 auto, American, Conference USA, Mt West, Sunbelt and MAC each get 1 (5 automatics). That leaves 13 automatics and then 5 at-large bids.
Bracket would be split like NFL. seeded 1-9 in each bracket. WInner of each bracket play for championship.

You could argue every team is flawed, perhaps besides Oregon which is unblemished but shown some vulnerabilities.
Penn State - played two good teams, lost to both (allbeit close games)
Ohio State - got embarrassed at home last time out
Notre Dame - lost at home to Northern Illinois (7-5 MAC team)
Indiana - played one good team, got beat soundly
Texas - only played UGA, no other good teams in the SEC, got beat both times
Boise St - schedule is obviously subpar, did play well at Oregon
UGA - rugged schedule, beat up, need to heal up
Tennessee - they are who they are, beat who they needed to beat
Arizona State - underrated perhaps, losing star WR may matter against Texas
Clemson - no
SMU - no, lost to BYU as well and no one talks about that in their case to get in
Oregon - gave up a bunch to Penn State, not sure they can beat OSU twice
