Who would you like as the next Mizzou head coach?

names I've heard on the short list
Herman - Houston...Intriguing, but probably a tad unproven
Odom - Mizzou DC...Would be a HUGE risk, IMO. No head coaching experience and only a few as a coordinator. And not much experience outside of MU.
Campbell - Toledo...I'd say maybe third on the list. The one thing that really bothers me is he's never been associated with major college football. Ever.
Fuente - Memphis...Has to be choice #1. Has done a really nice job at Memphis. Took over a down program. Has them competing really well in what is, I think, the best conference outside the Power 5. Would love to see a few more years HC experience. But he's gotta be tops on the list. Problem is, with all the BOC crap coming out about the Pinkel thing, this could become an unattractive job. And there will certainly be others competing for his services.
Fritz - Georgia Southern...A bit of the same worries as Campbell, but far more experience.
Gene Chizik - North Carolina DC, won NC at Auburn...This one made me LOL. Dumpster fire would be in full flames.
Matt Eberflus - Cowboys linebackers coach, Mizzou DC from 01-08...Ummm, no. Epic fail. Would mean a bunch of folks turned the job down.
Dave Christensen - Texas A&M OL coach/run game coordinator, Mizzou OC from 01-08...Dude is entertaining, but that's about it. Not much success in his only head coaching gig.
Too many of these names are on the list because of MU ties. They wouldn't be candidates at any other place in the Power 5 if not for the MU ties. Which, IMO, isn't exactly a recipe for hiring a HC.

Promote from within...this school now has a PR issue, and a recruiting one as well.

I'm not so sure. CGP did a great job of actually promoting the program to prospective players the way he backed his players and team during recent campus events that had nothing to do with football.

My thinking is like this...prospective player is deciding between Missouri, Arkansas, and Nebraska... Nebraska recruiter: "They have issues down at Mizzour-uh...I mean some racist stuff goin' on down there. I don't know?"(shakes head.) Recruit: "Hmmm? racists?"

pretty sure the recruiting base is better too.
As far as talent in the recruiting area, yes. But that is balanced out by the number of schools recruiting heavily in the area. Almost ever school in the country has a recruiter in charge of the Miami area, and a recruiter in charge of the Midwest.

Potential for great classes is higher at Miami though, youre right.

I guess that all depends on what you consider a base. Miami is in FL, sure. But they're also behind UF and FSU. Sorta like TTU was under Leach. Smack in the middle of Texas (ok, Lubbock isn't the middle, but you get my point), but lose players to aTm and Texas. They were, at best, the third choice. Much like the U is now. Again, it's not 1988. MU has STL and KC. And being in the SEC obviously opens the south, and they've still got the Texas ties. Not the premier school in the markets outside MO, but they're in those places. Again, not saying MU is superior to it. Just not sure the difference is what some think it is when you remember the U isn't really the U anymore. And lets face it, even theough the MU honks do wear out the SEC thing, it's certainly a recruiting tool and advantage.

Mizzou RAH recruiter, "We are definitely racist at MU. We love African American student athletes. They excel on the field and in the classroom. And, we send several to the NFL each year. Ever heard the names Maclin, Smith, Hood, Moore, Weatherspoon? We even like gay African American athletes like Michael Sam. Remember him?"

Recruit: "Oh...ya...I guess you guy do like diversity."

I hope that message can win out over the Black Lives Matter media blitz that has turned MU into the University of Ferguson.

I agree, think Odom has earned a shot at least. Plus that would keep consistency in Columbia for the time being. No one loved Pinkel if memory serves me correctly, give Odom a few years and see what he can do.

My Choice:

Barry Odom.

*Played at Missouri- came back to Missouri- Proven Winner.
For a guy who has one year experience in a Power 5 conference as a coordinator, and four overall, I'd like to see more experience. Take a look at Power 5 hires. Not many coordinators get those jobs, at least not jobs as attractive as MU. Granted, most hires are gambles, so Odom could be really good as a HC. But he could also be really bad. I'd rather see someone proven in a lesser job. Fuente, Herman, Niumatalolo, and Hudspeth come to mind immediately. But if MU decides to go the coordinator route, hard to imagine it wouldn't be Odom.

I like the guy from Houston. He was the OC at Ohio State when they won the title. So he should bring a good offense with him and that's what we need. I don't want to lose our defensive guys though. That would hurt. If that was to happen, do you think he would keep Odom and the other defensive guys or bring in his own people?

How about the Coach at Northwest Missouri that won all those championships?

Are you talking about Mel Tjeerdsma? He won 3 national titles there and had 4 runner-up finishes, but retired in 2010 from coaching and is the AD at NW MO St.

He did get offered the HC job at Sam Houston St. When Willie Fritz took the Georgia Southern job, but the president came in and overruled the AD and Search Comittee as he was packing to fly back down and sign the contract.. So he may not be completely retired lol

I'd bet almost anything, Odom will be a HC somewhere next season. If not at MU, he'll get a non-Power 5 job.

Odom wouldn't be bad. The problem with that is he'd keep Henson. I can't tell if Henson is a good OC or not. I just think we need some sort of change to the offense. I like the spread but maybe change up the scheme a little bit.

Yup. Couldn't stand his thought process. We have QBs who are 10-15 yard passers.......so let's chuck it for 45 yards every play

Forget the top level runnings backs in the backfield, just keep chucking those INT.

SEC, two major cities in a state where Mizzou is the only FBS football school. There should be some quality coaches interested in the job. Wonder if Gary Patterson would be interested.

I think patterson and herman are the top two targets and Mizzou has the money to throw at them

Best case realistic scenarios,

A. Hire Fuente, retain Odom as DC.

B. Hire Herman, potentially lose Odom and promote Kuligowski to DC.

C. Hire Willie Fritz

D. Make a run at Paul Johnson.
I think that A. is a wise choice. Not only retain Odom, but Kulogowski and as many of the defensive assistants as possible. Let Fuentes hire is own OC and additional coaching staff on that side of the ball. He might want to retain Andy Hill for recruiting purposes.
I will not miss Pinkel's offensive scheme... IMO it's been time for that to go for quite awhile.

th

GIVE ME THE BOYCOTT!

Barry Odom would be great hire. He is well respected a Defensive Coordinator, Memphis will hire him if Fuente leaves as expected, and he played at Missouri and part of that family of players. He would also keep some of the defensive coaches and keep that part of the Missouri game going. There would also be some consistency with recruiting and not have this year a total loss.
