Where is Missouri State going with Football?

They have Oklahoma State on the schedule for Game 1.

They have almost always had a Div. 1 opponent on their schedule for the pay day.
The guaranteed appearance money paid for most of the cost to run the program at one time. I don't know if that is still true today.

Yes
Yes, or at least another DeAndre Smith. And yes, he was a little bitty guy. A very quick, very strong, little bitty guy who had total command of that Bear Bone wide guard offense. Beat a lot of teams that had more physical talent by just controlling the ball, playing defense with their offense and frustrating the hell out of them because they couldn't get their hands on the ball to unleash their weapons.. Really fun to watch but those on here that don't appreciate service academy football wouldn't have thought so.
Of course that was 30 years ago too.

I saw them play Northern Illinois when they had Marshall Taylor at QB. Slowed him down a lot. He was a deep ball threat.

Branch had the most success there with an option based offense....
I forget who his O-line coach was but his unit was always blue collar-tough-out work you mentality guys. Like I said previously, it was like they were thinking, "Okay, three more yards, first down, we keep the ball for another series. They can't be scoring on us if we don't let them possess the ball."

How exciting.

I feel like Stec is slowly getting talent down there. It has been a longer process than I would have imagined back in 2015. I have only watched them play twice in person the last couple years: NDSU in 2016 and Mizzou in 2017. They played pretty well in those two games all in all.

I think Stec was probably caught off guard by how good the MVFC is once he moved to Springfield. It is surprising to me that they haven't hit the JUCOs as hard or gone after FBS transfers like some other schools in FCS.

As for the sport of football at MSU, I kind of question where they are going too. They haven't made the playoffs since 1990. Springfield doesn't seem to care about FCS football nearly the way they do about Bears/Lady Bears basketball. If they could somehow move up to FBS I think they would have sufficient interest. But if the long-term plan is to stay in FCS and in the MVFC, I think there is a legitimate discussion that they might be better off reallocating money to their other sports like volleyball, basketball, and baseball. I doubt that happens for several reasons, one of which is the presence and visibility of their marching band on campus.

Hopefully Stec can get things going this year. The schedule seems manageable outside of Oklahoma State.

In 1987. Bahahahahaha

And when Branch left they went with Del Miller who was supposed to bring in a high flying passing attack, We all know how that went, and since then it has been a long line of not so great football. I still remember Pitt State coming into Springfield and beating them with the old Veer, that day the passing attack sucked. There was such a buzz about that game because they could have hired Broyles, but they wanted Del because they did not want another boring offense like what Branch did.

But if the flagship program Mizzou cannot even recruit the best football players Missouri has to offer how can Missouri State get the second best or even third? They can't and the don't, so I think you have to find a scheme that works with the talent you can recruit.

Supposedly the MSU president is a big football fan, specifically Arkansas and very much wants to see the university develop the overall football culture and experience to a much higher level. I don't know this from the mouth of the horse but I understand the direction to be focusing simultaneously on improving what happens on the field and the overall game day experience. Stec was a piece of that, as was the renovation and some of the festivities they've added. Moving to another league is in no way any part of the current strategy. Win more games and make the experience something that attracts more fans whether it's students, alum, but especially the public at large.

Ending the program is not going to happen either as much as some of the guys on the maroon nation board want to see it happen. Some of those guys get frustrated with the effort and resources being put into football while the cash cow basketball program has been sinking to the bottom of the MVC.

I can't really look at Missouri State and not think they have a sub-standard sports program in general. Most of the D2 programs in the MIAA have more sports.

They are a national power in both baseball and volleyball (regularly top 25 in both) and have had success in other sports as well. Your perception of them is because football and mens basketball have been poor for quite awhile, but the athletics there as a whole are solid. They won the MVC all sports trophy recently.

Perception can become reality. Those two sports you mentioned don't pay the bills when it comes to attracting students and fans.

You want to attract students to grow and fans to help pay the bills then you need to put a product on the field that wins in a major sport.

They don't have Men's tennis, Men's X country or Men's track. They got rid of a long standing field hockey program. And they got rid of wrestling. To me this makes them look a substandard institution.

They removed field hockey and subbed in beach volleyball in order to save a little money. That is basically why the other sports were axed too over the years. It's a lot more expensive to have those sports at the MVC level when compared to the MIAA. They have a similar number of sports to the other Valley schools for the most part.

With regard to the substandard portion of your comments, the University of Central Missouri has more sports than Wichita State does. Does Wichita State have a substandard sports program when compared to UCM? Not sure I am fully following that part of what you are saying.

I understand what you are saying but I never really understood axing men's track and field and keeping women's.

With regard to that question, Does Northwest Missouri State compare to Wichita St.? National championships in football and more sports to play.

I don't know about WS but NW has the avg for a D2 program. Girls volleyball, CC, soccer, tennis and softball in fall. BBall in winter and track in spring. Men have football and cross country in fall. BBall in winter. Track, baseball, soccer and tennis in spring.

I would say that are both doing very well at their respective levels. Hard to compare the AAC to the MIAA, but they are both successful relative to their primary competition.

MSU is a hot mess of idiots....they are a Girls Basketball school and have undercut the football program and left it to Rot on the vine. They sports people Have always dreamed of moving into a better conference in Basketball but they figured out to late that to Join a Good conference in basketball not located on the east coast you have to have a Legit football program because it drives the bus. I remember a few years ago they actually thought they where headed to conference USA or a second option the Sun Belt I INFORMED THEM neither would take them a below average basketball school and a horrible football program. And that they had missed the chance years ago to build a Legit FCS football squad and then transition to a G5 FBS team and if they had done that they could of dragged their Basketball programs along for the ride. It pizzed them off when hit with the truth.....Now many have given up hope and realize they are done with that dream and the football program is just a liability heck some of the female SJW want to go to no schollie for the program but still compete in FCS to maintain Division 1 status in all other sports.

I'm glad they cut their own throats because they trashed what Branch had built.....Now both the Boys and Girls Bball programs are trash.

Thumbs down. For many reasons.

I'm thinking you were an English major...

Missouri state has aspirations of being a true competitor to Mizzou. I wouldn’t be surprised to see them dump a huge amount of money into football to achieve that after stec leaves.

They were a true competitor to Mizzou week one last year. Embarrassing showing for the Tigers.

You might not like the message but it's the truth. MSU could of road high back with Branch built a strong football tradition at the FCS level and then possibly moved into the Sun belt or Conference USA. But the power brokers wanted a more exciting brand and sold out for a Pass friendly D.Miller and gutted the program. They where clueless and got rid of winning football for a More what they thought was more exciting football.....you can see the results.

Unless MSU dumps in about 400 million they have no chance to compete with Mizzou or any P5 program. MSU athletic budget runs at a loss and has to be propped up by the university funds. Mizzou athletic budget is not attached to the university and either makes a profit or dips into their own athletic reserves if a short fall happens. SEC money is at a different level than MVC money and even then Mizzou is at the bottom of SEC money. How can schools like MSU expect to actually compete with p5 programs and when the P5 decide to pull and start their own Basketball tourney to keep all that cash what is the lesser teams going to do?

IT dang well was a embarrassing showing for Mizzou and the Coaching staff. Can't smooth over that at all, but that doesn't negate the fact that schools that are non-P5 are on the way out. It's just like when the Wal-Marts and Amazons consolidate and weed out the competition.

Hope it is true. Competition makes us better. The State of Missouri deserves a second BCS team.
